Hi All,
I have kept my child hood ride in the roof and now am deciding to restore it. I am just trying to clarify if its a standard supergoose or just a team mongoose. I want to know which decals to get that is all. I remeber when I was little it had JT racing team stickers on the kashimax stem pad and also on the down bar. There is one metallic supergoose sticker left on the rear fork. I am not sure wether this was put on later or not. They do not seem to be available in the decals from thr vintage bmx ones.
Also I have yellow skyway II tuffs on the bike. They are about 42cm in diameter does this mean i need 16 inch tyres?
I am lucky enough to have a small local bmx track just down the road which i cannot wait to ride on. WIll probbaly then put the bike away for when i have a son.
Regards.

That frame is a 1980 Team Mongoose. It has oringal decals and paint. They are hard to find i almost any conditon with paint on them.
The wheels will meaure 16" in diameter but they are 20" wheels that use 20" tires. More than likely it was not an original complete bike but more than likely built as a frame and added parts.
Very cool that you want to save it an restore it. The decals are out there and reproduced perfectly. The paint: there is ne guy here - Chip C4 labs - who will have the correct paint code to paint it back to what it could be.
There will be some parts that will elude you but they are out there if you want a 100% rebuild to how you had it as a kid.
Good luck and welcome.

Thanks TeamRob.
Yeh I beleive it was put together from the frame up. As it has Tange forks which look like the tange 1200 ones and a ALPS handlebars. Yeh looks like things are difficult to find especially sets of blue tyres. It used to have a thicl snakebelly tyre on the front which seem very rare these days. One might pop up somewhere.

Hiya,
I beleieve it is Moly Chrome and has been chromed as it has the moly chrome stickers. That peice that you are asking if its nickel has just worn worse than the other areas.

Your bike is Chrome underneath. It is a "J" date code - meaning October. Ony the early ones were Nickel plated underneath.
Here is what a NOS 1980 would look like.

Kicks, post some pics and it will be easier to identify. Is the bike still complete, or is it stripped down? Is there any color behind/underneath the BB or headset bearing cups?

I do not want to dissappoint you, but that is more than likely a Motomag frame and NOT a Team frame. I say this is not a Team frame due to - my 78 has a flatened rear (by the droput) on the passenger (right side) sied of the frame for the chain so it does not rub. This more than liekly came with coaster brakes and did not need extra room for a wider freehwheel hub.
What made you think it was a Team? The 78's Team, 80, and 81 all had the pressed rear for chain rub and the non team or Motomag frames were straight like yours. I cannot say for sure for the rare 77 frames (2 known right now) but the 77 would have had a caoster brake tab.

No I am not sure if I want to restore it or leave it as orginial I have already source new OGK grips which where the originals on it and also ordered some new decals so I am kind of heading in that direction. I have started cleaning up the original yellow Skyway Tuff 2's and the Blue Kashimax MX seat. I think I will head in the way of a restore as the Alps handlebars are starting to pit in some areas.
I have been reading a few articles and am worried about the re-chroming process from some horror stories. What would be the best way to go about this. Getting it chromed and then powder coated?
Cheers

Ok. Nearly a year later since i posted on this. I am very slow at getting this restore done. I unfortunalty lost my orignal seat post from the bike as it was so rusted in i had to drill and twist it out. Got a new one but the original was made in Japan and was branded.
I have a new set of decals. a pair of NOS grips blue OGK's jsut like I had when I originally got the bike. I also have aquired two sets of Cheng Shin blue 1.75 and 2 x 2.125 tyres to run a fat and skinny.
Just finished soaking the seat clamp and the original MKS BM5 pedals in a vingar bath. Has worked a treat with a little scrubbing. I will now attempt to get these sprayed matt black as they where orginally.
The forks that originally came with this frame are Tange they are not tx 1200 or 500s or trx's They are stamped with 'Tange OT' it looks like. Anyone know what these are?
Also the handlebars are marked Japan 'ALPs' Not sure if they were orignally with the bike or not. Were these ever sold standard with any bike.
I am still not sure If I want to now ride this as a survivor and or get the whole frame rechromed and sprayed.
I will post a pic of the forks and handlebars if anyone is keep to identify them
Cheers

My opinion (for what it's worth) is that from your pictures that looks like nickel under the candy coat not chrome. Yes your decals say chrome moly as you mentioned but that is the composition of the tubes nothing to do with the finish.
If you go to vintagemongoose.com and download the 1979-80 catalog and go to page 10 which shows the team frame on it's own, it clearly states:
"Frame nickel plated then candy red or candy blue epoxy coated"If it were me in posession of that frame i would definitely NOT have it chromed !!!! I would carefully remove the remaining blue candy finish down to the bare nickel (don't use any metal tools or abrassives !) then remove any areas of rust (dropouts ?) with some of the various techniques described on this site. Then polish and buff the whole frame until the nickel shines and finally have a respected / recomended sprayer do a blue candy coat. Add your decals from Bill at BMX products and she'll look sweet

I think you maybe right. I believe it is nickle. Chrome I should be able to pick off and it jsut doesn't look like that chrome finish to me. Is there any other way I can test to see if its nickle. Good for me though. Now I don't have to pay to get it rechromed.

Not sure about a testing method mate but if you pick some of the unpeeled candy blue off in a new area then the finish underneath should reveal itself as chrome or nickel. Either way i'd strip the blue, then polish whatever is underneath and candy over rather than re-chroming
P.S. TeamRob - love that Blue team goose you have there - that's a sweet goose

Hey thanks for tip. I went out and bought some AutoSol metal polish today to see how it would go. Only started polishing jsut a little bit where the blue epoxy coat has come off. And it has come up a treat. I will now remove all the blue paint and polish it up real good.
Thanks again. I am very happy I dont need to rechrome or anything.
Cheers

Ok. Have been busy the last day. Stripped the paint of the frame and have polished it using Autosol. It has come up resonably well. I was going to get it powder coated but due to the GEC (Global Economic Crisis) I have left it in chrome. I thought since I am going to be riding it also I wouldnt want my fresh paint to get chipped.
I bought for it new tires, seat post and grips the rest is all from when I had it as a youngster. I still need to put the pedals on. Still soacking one in vinegar to get rid of the rust on it. It should be ready by this afternoon I hope. I also need ot purchase a new blue brake cable and some pads. But I am sure it will get a ride before then.
I have attached photos of me in probably mid 1980's and then a few from the clean up. I wont call it a restore cause its not perfect.
