Full Version: Got My Old Dg Back, Not By Choice Though.

I got this bike for christmas in 1979, It originally was white/red components. I cracked the frame on the chainstay crossbar and retired it for a while. later I took it to school and had my metal shop teacher weld up the crack, painted it green and put white components off of a GT performer and rode ramp with it. everyone at that time was riding gt performers, haros, and trick stars. and then there was me and my green/white DG, that got some attention. (good attention). as I got out of high school it finally retired to the top of a freezer in my folks garage, avoiding many trips to the dump. (luckily). years later I saw it sitting up on that freezer and thought I'd build it back up again with a few parts I had lying around in boxes that also avoided the garbage can. I rode it around for a few more years until my son got old enough to ride bikes and gave it to him to ride. It's now mine again since now he's a teenager and doesn't have any interest in riding bikes anymore. I don't like that very much but thats how it is. I figured if I bought it back from him he won't sell it out from under me. He's a great kid and I don't think he'd do that, but I wasn't about to take the chance. he was tempted on selling it to his neighbor who told him he'd give him $150 cash. so I gave him the $150 and took it home. it's at my house now. he still gets to ride it when he comes over if he wants to, but likes guitar hero. (thats a whole other thread altogether)
augh! teenagers.
so.....
what should I do with it now? I like the color scheme, but I was thinking on just re-doing the frame with fresh blue powdercoat.
any ideas? thoughts if I did the right thing?

as you can see in the cropped picture with the DG on the freezer that there weren't TOO many trips to the dump. (if any)

thanks.

It does bug me a little that he's not into it like I am. but if he really wanted it he'd want to keep it, and I didn't force him to part with it. he would have parted with it sooner or later I think.

Nice recovery....that's a good story. It was probably the right time to get it back.....withe the potential there to lose it for good.

I'd keep it as is.

That's what I'm thinking too. Looks nice as is!

Waite a minute, no offence, but you gave it to him, and he sold it back to you for 150 bones? Why didn't he give it back to you, or at the very, very least cut you a deal because you are his DAD. At least you found out about the other offer before it was too late.

Nice save!

I would have rather him kept it than buy it back. he was wanting to sell it to some neighbor of his to buy guitar hero. and I told him I'd give him the cash for it since it was my old bike. I gave it to him as a birthday present so it was his to do whatever with. so if he wanted to sell it it was his choice, BUT...
if he ever decided to sell it then I get asked first to buy it back, that was the deal. besides, it was kept in an unlocked shed just asking to get stolen.
I'm more disappointed than anything else, I thought he'd be into it more than he was. If someone offered me that amount when I was his age I would never have considered selling it, unless it was enough to buy a new bike that I wanted.

and $150 for a complete DG is a deal I think.
