Making my first attempt at restoring a few pieces. Ted Carl's threads on OA & Polishing have been very informative -- Thanks Ted!!

Currently working on a Tuf Neck Stem -- Getting it ready with some other parts (Maxy cross cranks) to go to the Ano Shop......Would like to remove the Quill from the stem but am not sure how these parts are held together --- press fitted or threaded?

Yes...a very basic question but really need to get this quill off to do this job at least partially correct. Any guidance would be much appreciated.

the shaft is basically drawn in by the bolt. not really a true press-fit, but tighter than being able to just push it in/out by hand.

what i've done many times is just loosen the big bolt holding the shaft in a couple turns. then rest the stem base on top of my vice (shaft down, vice jaws not tightened) and tap the bolt w/hammer. repeat this a couple of turns of the bolt at a time til the shaft is out. put something between the stem base and vice to prevent damage.

to reinstall, just slowly draw the shaft back in with the bolt. i don't know how much it helps, but i always put some red loc-tite inside the base when i put them back together.

i've done this many times since BITD with no problems, ever. these stems were all "riders", too (not just on show bikes).

Man I've been wondering this same thing for a long time. THANK YOU. I was going to take my stems to the machine shop. Gonna try it myself first.

I traded e-mails with Ted Carl --- The Master --- He agrees:

"It's really quite simple with the PRo Necks. The quills are pressed in, and not that tight either. You can use the quill bolt, but it is better to remove the quill bolt, and go buy a matching bolt at the hardware store the same size. I think it is 5/8-16, or 5/8 -24, either coarse or fine thread can be found on them, but I can't remember exactly which 2 they are, and I'm at work right now.

Thread the bolt into the quill most of the way, and then hang the quill over the edge of a sturdy counter, and tap the quill out. Careful not to damage the aluminum bottom doing this.

Then you can use the bolt with a bushing on it to draw the quill back in when you are done polishing and restoring it.

OK - I've (as well as local bike shop) tried to remove stem/quill from base as recommended without luck -- It's not budging -- Any other suggestions? Should I heat the stem/quill near the bottom and then try giving it a few taps (whacks) as previously suggested? I'm thinking the heat may be sufficient to break the bond at the base/stem jct?

Ano shop won't color neck as is given the stem/quill is steel. They said for them to reanodize, this piece would have to be removed. So.....I'm kind of at a cross-roads until I can get this resolved. Any further advice would be appreciated.

Alrighty then, it's done -- Thanks for the help -- lol!!

Used my neighbors 12 ton drill press to pop the quill/stem out of the base. It was in there mighty tight - Took ~2.5 tons of force to remove! No damage sustained in the process either - just made sure there was sufficient padding under the base and placed a nickel between the press and bolt.

Will give it a final polish tonight and get it with the other parts (cranks, seat post clamp) to the ano shop tomorrow.
