It was a yellow and Orange gear.....
everything was mostly yellow, with orange writing....

I think they were more of a Co-sponsorship program....
hooked ya up with the UNI...... and an orange forklifter type of a number plate.....

I was part of that team.. would love a plate or any of the gear... or find out if anyone even remembers it..

Velocity out of South Carolina? I was on a Velocity team with Robbie Morales around '87, '88 and '89 if I remember correctly... raced a lot of NBL nationals... is that the team you're talking about?

it may be.. what was the gear like?
It was.. what i remember more of a National Co sponsorship thing.... but they may have had an actual team...... i found an old pic of my crew.. lol/// we had white long sleeve t shirt type of jerseys.. and it was I believe yellow with Orange Answer leathers..???

The uniforms were mostly white jerseys with orange and blue Velocity logo... can't remember exactly what the pants were (isn't that terrible?) but I think that they were more colored than the jerseys (either blue or orange as the main color)... they gave us each 2 uniforms and paid for hotels and entry fees... fed us with the kids, too.

From what I can remember, there was a very successful developer in Hilton Head who created the Velocity team with a local bike shop for his two grandsons. Robbie Morales had left GT after having knee surgery, I think, and I was picked up after winning both days of a national where the team was just forming up... it may have been Tanglewood? My first race with the team was Woodward and the team stayed at the Camp Woodward cabin dorms for that race. I remember watching Pee Wee's Big Adventure with the kids on the team (I was 28 at the time, so it had to be 1987)... they were showing the movie in the pavillion at Camp Woodward... The best part about that whole race was the fact that we didn't have to travel at all to get to the track for practice! You could sleep in and just roll out of bed at 7:30 am for cruiser practice!

I believe that the idea was to promote the Velocity bike shop and build a mail-order business, but the underlying mission was to have a team for the two boys and for the family to travel together to the BMX races. They helped me get to a lot of races for more than two years, and I was able to win NBL National #2 cruiser in my class again in 1988.

Actually The team was started for Chris Gates and his brother by their grandfather (or maybe father). They lived in or near Fredericksburg, Va. I know the bike shop they opened was located there. (They opened it so they could compete in the bike shop catagory at NBL nationals.)

Popeye!

Thanks for chiming in! I could not remember exactly all the details (isn't that sad? I raced for Velocity for two years), but I thought that the grandfather had been a developer on St. Simons Island or Hilton Head Island and was bankrolling the team. The old gentleman was really good to us all and made sure that the Gates brothers had a team that really supported each other at every race.

One of the best races I've ever been to was with Velocity at the Woodward NBL national in the summer of 1988. It was a great experience, one of the best in my 26 years of racing... smile.gif
