Full Version: The Re-redo Of My Ju6

BRIAN HAYS
I just finished this and thought I'd do a thread on it to explain the transformation. As many of you know, when I found this frame it was missing the headtube and the seat tube was snapped off. After having Rod rebuild the frame, I had Chip at C4 powder it "SE brown", not realizing at the time that the JU6 was introduced before "SE brown" actually existed and was a different color brown. I figured this out quickly after getting the frame back from Chip and compared it to pics of Jeff with his personal brown frame. The bike sat in the bike room in the corner. The longer it sat there, the more unhappy I became with it and some of the parts on it. I sent the frame and fork back to Chip in Oct and he repowdered the frame a much more correct JU brown and redid the forks in tan for a nice contrast.

I changed the tires, bars, brake lever, decal color, brake cable and padset too in the redo. Actually, I need to say a HUGE thanks to Carbiz for the NOS SER pads. Me redoing this bike was contingent on finding a set of these pads, which I thought would never happen, but as luck would have it, the first day I posted about wanting a set, Lionel hooked me up.

Here's the refinished product.
Thanks again to JU for the decals and email help on the color
Lionel Carbizguy for the pads
Darren Chan for the Skyway forks
Chris Pridgen and Steve Barath for the tires
Bob Bohlmann for the seat and grips
Rod for his excellent craftsmanship
and more than anyone, Chip at C4 for putting up with me through this whole long drawn out ordeal. His service is second to NONE. Thanks guys!!

Very nice. I agree the the second version is way better. Lots of hard work on everybody's part. Include yourself for saving it. Well done.
rumblerdave
Both versions are beautiful! good job!
spike
I'm sure I'll catch some flak for this but I like it better the first way it was done......personal preference.
BRIAN HAYS
Not at all Spike. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

Brian, incredible restoration...awesome!

Nice job Brian. The redo is really clean. I think the color looks pretty spot on.

Top notch Brian... as usual.

I really like "take 2" and the improved color scheme.

Looks great Brian, classic build!!!

So how did you get the head tube straight... As in, does the bike have any of the "running dog sideways" syndrom? or a car with a bent frame... You know. You must have some serious measuring tools... Just curious.

You do deserve a F'n award for that work performed. Seriously! Anyone (including myself) can buy a frame and slap parts on... this is a true restoration in my eyes,
Spicoli
it's hard to improve on perfection, but you nailed it Bro...one of my all time fave builds, and my new desk top background !!

Thanks Brad. Rod Miles did all the frame repair. I assume he's got a jig. The frame is true to the naked eye. I can't say how it rides simply because at 235 pounds and 6 ft, coupled with the rareness of the frame, I don't ride this particular one.

LOL!!!

Brian that re-do is sweet!!!!

Brian, great job on the rebuild, nice improvement over the first build, I love it!, though I really liked the first build as well. I have a ? about the brown color, You say that the brown used on your second build was used before SE came out with their own SE brown, do you have any idea what year SE changed the brown color? Reason I ask is I have a SE Looptail Floval Flyer that was originally brown BITD, but to me looks more like the brown used in your second build, rather than the first, is this possible? I'm in the process of getting it restored back as close to original as possible so any help is appreciated.

Very nice Redo, Brian. Color, Pads, Wow!
PEP
Nice Job Brian. It's a stunner for sure.

I'll tell ya what would be better though......if maybe I'd actually get to see the collection in person someday which constitutes you showing up for an event. At least make Rock 08 bro. ph34r.gif

When I saw the first build of Brian's JU-6, it immediately became my favorite bike of all time! I knew no bike would surpass that one as my favorite bike ever, but then, after seeing the redo, I have to say I have a new favorite build ever!!! How weird is that...my 2 favorite builds ever are the same bike!!!??? The part I miss most from the old build is the Blue decal set, but with the color scheme of this new bike, the Tan decals go perfectly with the build...actually, I can't spot anything that isn't perfect!

Great Job Brian!!!
GR8BNDINI
Mr. Hays, you changed her, my Monica (actually yours) I cant believe it. Its like Pam Anderson had her implants taken out. But original is original and I can appreciate that. She is still a dreamboat and looks STELLAR. Good job, I agree with PEP, she would be an excellent addition to the Rock this year, I mean next year, or whatever, is there a possibility maybe?
Clavicus2000
Beautiful job Brian! I always look forward to seeing your bikes. I have a few questions for you...

Any idea of why they JU went with brown? I always thought that brown was an unusual color for a bike, given that the norm back then was chrome, nickel, or bright colors. (SE was definitely ahead of their time in the color department, lots of brown bikes now).

How do you differentiate a JU6 frame from a PK?

Again, great job on a killer bike. On a personal note, being that I am a big Race Inc. fan, I would like to thank you for everything that I have learned about the various Bastian creations, by reading your posts. You are definitely THE authority on all things Bastian!

Clavicus, The four original colors offered by SE in the beginning were brown, tan, baby blue and ball burnished (raw). I remember seeing an interview with the OM somewhere that explained his reasoning on how he came up with these now legendary colors. Maybe BenOr can shed some light on this for us.

As far as the difference between a JU6 and a PK Ripper, The JU6 does not have the gussett at the headtube, joining the head tube, top tube and down tube, and the PK Ripper does. As you can see from my first pic, the JU6 had a severe structural weakness at the head tube. A vast majority of them ended up like mine, with a front end fracture. When Jeff left SE to go work with his dad at GJS, the gussett was added and the frame was renamed the PK Ripper. JU6's never had serial numbers and the first PK's in 79 did not either but after that, they all had PKxxxx serial numbers.

Gr8bdnini, sorry but it had to be done smile.gif

OS Jbay, it is my understanding, from some conversation between Chip at C4 and Tim Cook that SE used different shades of the baby blue and brown due to different suppliers. I know the brown on JU's from 78 is darker than the "SE Brown" from 79 and on, and I assume these were the only two shades, but I don't know that. The SE brown that my frame got redone in first came from a color match on a NOS loop Floval Flyer, so I know it was right on.
Paul Springer
Truly amazing, your detective work and attention to details is incredible. I am always impressed with how the collective professional ability of the OS community works together to create awesome peices of art. It sure is funny how well we can understand the love (sickness) we have for these bikes. Awesome job Brian.

Thanks Brain, I appreciate your help with the color. I can't wait to see your next build, though it will be near impossible to out do this one.

Truly gorgeous! Nice story.....sometimes you gotta build it with what you've got just to see how you really want it to be. Nice work by Rod btw.
BRIAN HAYS
Just wanted to say thanks for all the comments from you guys. I appreciate it. Nice to see Scott Towne and Ben Joy around too.
OLDSKOOLPK
I hated you when you first built it, now I REALLY hate you for the way it turned out now!!!

Merry Christmas Mr. Hays (i finally spelled your last name CORRECTLY without the "E"!! LOL!!)

Beautiful Bike!!!!! Great Job!!!!!

The redo looks perfect!... better than before.

The first batch of 10 JU6 Frames where chocolate Brown. Jeff of course had the the first (and still does). I received a chocolate brown one from that batch. I rode it for awhile before I stripped and polished it. I'm pretty sure my STR1 was tan. I rode it around the block and took it apart. It was horrible.

Ben
BRIAN HAYS
Do you have any pics of yours, Ben? Mine was stripped raw too but was originally brown. I've often wondered how many JU's were made, how many of each color there were and how many round top tube frames were built. Questions we'll never know the answers to.
johnnieboy
Brian,

I loved your first resto, which I think you posted in summer 07. I also love the revamped version.

Given what you started with (some broken frame tubes!) and the care and attention you and eveyone you've worked with has given to get this restoration 'right' - I'd say your builds and dedication to old school bmx is pretty much unrivalled, in my humble opinion.

Amazing stuff.

Extended hands to Rod Miles for his remarkable ability. Reading the forum, I see he's not 100%. Wishing him well.
