This is just about the coolest thing to happen in Northern California in a long time. Hope the tree huggers don't figure out a way to stop it. The BMX version of this would be Saddleback, Corona, or Merrit still sitting as it was left in 1978 being reopened for a once a year vintage race. I went to most of the Plymouth National races but never got to race am day or any of the local races. I have a 1980 YZ250 I'm building for a PV(post vintage, think mid school) race bike and I think I'm gonna start looking for a vintage bike. Here's the post I copied from Motodrive.
There is a Post-Vintage/Vintage and Trials going to be held at the old PLYMOUTH, CA Hangtown National track with the date probably being the end of April 2008. You may have heard or have threaded this already, but I haven't seen it. Old eyes and impatience maybe.
Last weekend, a number of us, led by promoter Dirk D Williams, met with the landowner on the grounds of the old track. Realize next year is the 30th anniversary of the very last Hangtown National held there. We that were there could bench race for hours upon hours on how rough this track was, especially considering how the bikes have evolved over the years. Now if the tracks are rough like Plymouth rough, many go elsewhere just to do doubles, triples, huge tabletops; but nothing replaces the courage we as riders in that generation had. And the pros back then were unbelievable.
While there is another city council meeting to tie up some loose ends, the Emerson family, owners of the property have allowed a once a year PV/Vintage and Trials even to be held there until she sells the property. She is adamant that it be the old bikes and her father would want it that way.
Me, I used to race the old track back in the day; every race possible. I am 48 and used to also compete with a person Greg "Nuclear" Neukam to have our articles and pics in Cycle News. I also did some photo shoots at the '77 Sears Point Trans-AMA races for the now defunct Modern Cycle magazine. I have two pics in that issue of Shultz and one of maybe Chuck Sun.If any memorabilia magazine owners still have that particular issue, let me know since my has been missing for a few years. While my last race was in 1993 as a Pro/Vet Pro, while already wrenching on bikes, a then young man named Scott Davis and I became very close friends and I became his mechanic thru out most of his National career. Many of you know him as the operator/promoter of the also legendary E st track in Marysville that he got reopened on a permanent basis and Riverfront Park in Yuba City.
Dirk has designated myself and a number of people at last weekends meeting to the best of our ability, re-create the original National Track that make Plymouth Hangtown Nationals one of the best races IMO in the history of AMA National MX. We are also cleaning up the property for Ms. Emerson as a good will gesture to her for being behind this once a year event.
We are also looking for Pros, local privateers to be a part of this event. I understand Bob Myers posts on this site. While I don't know Bob personally, I vividly recall him and Darrell Shultz (on a Ossa believe it or not) have some good battles. Even though I raced and did the CN stuff, I have some old slides that I hope I can find of Bob cause I know I used to have some of him, Shultz, Magoo, Lesniewski, Losh, Parry Klassen, Pat Richter; when the expert classes had on many, many occcassions full gates and in a case or two, two divisions of 125/250 there.
If you read this Bob, I know we would surely like you and any of the old locals from NorCal as well as down south and all over to pass the word around that Plymouth will have a YEARLY Post Vintage/Vintage and Trials, tenatively the last weekend in April 2008 and for maybe a few to several years to come.
We are honoring the memory of Mr. Emerson, the landowner at the time of this great race and track and I would hope any former pros back in the days of Plymouth, whether be local racers or National riders, please pass the word around that Plymouth is alive again next Apr 2008.
