Hey Bri.
DX's weren't released till '81. KKT lightnings (or KKT K-MX rattraps) would be the go on a '79.
Black K-MXs came as standard fitment on MXIIIs in 79/80. Lightings were the hot upgrade though.

beyond era correct the dx pedals will hold up to riding better than the delicate kkt's, that is if you are gonna ride the scoot.

People act like DX pedals were out in 1981, but I have yet to see them on any bike or in any advertisement in a 1981 issue. The shimano ads in that years mags did not display DX pedals. They started advertising them in 1982.

If you raced in Spring of '81 you would have seen them on the scene, experiencing the pegs in your shin from a slipped pedal for the first time is hard to forget.

Shimano DX pedals ad from JULY 1981 issue of NBL Bicyles Today magazine.... so continue to "act" like they came out in '81...

Why yes, it did! Did it make you feel like a jerk?
It was just a little emphasis to make a point about the way you so matter of factly stated that there were NO DX pedals in'81 because YOU hadn't seen them!
Lighten up pal! Jeez, some people are sensitive...

Brian, I have KKT's on one rider and DX on my Supergoose. The DX are much better for daily riding but the KKT's will look better.

What kind of KKT pedals are we talking about? The rat traps, or the Lightnings?
I have KKT rat traps on my 1981 GT 26, but I also have a set of silver DX pedals that I *did* have on it. The DX's are nicer to ride, as Coasty pointed out.
I used to hate rat trap pedals, but now, they look kinda cool and "vintage".
I missed out on some NOS black KKT rat traps. That damn Damon beat me to them...*again*

I said "I have yet to see them" How is that so matter of factly. You need to quit being such a nerd and picking apart peoples posts and using them to make yourself feel good. Give me your address I'll send you something nice for Christmas to help build your spirits.

Bobby Encinas was running prototype DXs in 79 when he rode for Shimano. A bit different with a big pedal shaft but still DX prototypes.
And as far as the "act" comment, a lot gets lost when typing vs speaking so the comment did come out a bit harsh.

I guess I'm in real trouble then. I have an '80 Kos with '81 dx's, '81 campy records, double pinch 185's . a majority of my bike is "period" correct. bitd we would swap parts to make our bike stronger
not to be model year correct. ride what you like.

I will add to the ministers statements some first hand data.
Encinas and a few others (perhaps Kosmala, Clinton, etc.) had the prototype DX crank and pedals. Compared to what was released (DX cranks standard 9/16 pedal shafts) the proto DXs had a splined and offset spindle with AX (High end 10 speed pedals) style pedals (no through spindle) and self locating should a pedal be slipped. VERY TRICK.
What this means is to change the effective crank arm length one would rotate the arms (in relation to the spindle) on the offset spindle (as opposed to rotating the pedal boss in the production DX crank) each side same rotation. Therefore changing the length.
Note. Offset spindle means it is not a straight spindle like everyone has seen. It means that between the bearings in is straight but off center at the right (above) and left (below) side. Think of three different centers of rotation. One for the BB. and two separate for each crank arm.
I saw these up close at the Beavers Shop in 79.
Anyone other than me ever seen em??? Photos??Encinas

I agree we used to swap parts out all the time. When I think period correct I think about a 2-3 year leeway. Unless you are trying to build a stock bike as it would come out of the box got with what you like.
Besides Thruster pedals blow em both away.
