Hey guys,
Ive been sitting on this bike for a few years now. I got it as a complete from Larry and changed a few things on it. Its almost done. It needs black KKT rattraps (anyone have a set??) and a straddle cable that I cant seem to find in the right length anywhere.

Well I was itching to post some pics and share it with you guys. These bikes are pretty rare, not too many show up so I figured you'd all be interested. Let me know what you guys think.

Aftermarket RRS pads

This is one of the early frames. The latter bikes had BMX size headtubes. These early ones had the smaller road bike

Now that... Is absolutely stunning. I have always thought the RRS 24 is one of the trickest 24's ever.

There are two 24's I would love to own. A JMC and an RRS.

Your choice of components is, to me, pretty much spot on. Well done!

Consider me extremely envious.

Beautiful build bro,excellent job.

Wow I had no idea that canti's were around in 82! That bike is so friggin sick! Whats the history of RRS?

Rad bike for sure!

BMX 2112, i got your PM. Thanks but I had in mind the KKT Rattraps not the MKS. I like the bodies on the KKT's more.

Thanks for all the compliments guys, I've been humbled over the years by some of the cruisers I've seen around here. I'm just trying to keep up.

This is what I know about RRS. I might be wrong on a few minor details though.
-Craig Kundig owned a couple of Schwinn bike shops in Redlands and Riverside California (hence, RRS).
-He decides to put together a BMX shop team in 1980 and starts developing his own frames.
-He enters a rider, Joe Claveau, into the cruiser class on a modified 24" schwinn bike. The kid wins the race and wins the cruiser class that season. The 24" cruiser is born. THe article above gives a more complete story.
-the RRS frames were WAY ahead of their time and were made by Trackmaster. They had very unique geometries, canti brakes, breezer drop outs, eccentric BB with bolts that tighten the BB down, vertical stationary rear drop outs, Road bike size headtubes.
-In 83 they shifted to standard BMX headtube sizes.
- They didnt make anything else except soft goods and stickers
-Craig Kundig is still around and still owns the same shops although the names are slightly different.

I've done a count in my head and I can think of about 7-9 24" RRS that have surfaced.
-I've got 2
-Roc has a red one that he bought form Paul
-J. Haney told me he has a white one
-Carbiz guy had a red one he got from Larry S. He sold it but I'm not sure who bought it.
-There was a red one on Ebay a few months ago that I think had a repair
-Popeye has one
-Troy Daniels, I bought some stickers form his brother and he mentioned that he still had his cruiser.

Im sure I missed some if so, Lets see them!!!!!!!

You can have your own Phil Flip Flop hub made, just find a hub for a tandem and send it tho Phil for a new axel w/BMX spacing. I have seen a few tandem hubs on the bay. Vey sweet ride.

By the way guys, my name is Juan and I live in Miami but.....

IM NOT THAT OTHER JUAN WITH THE DEEP POCKETS!

Not that anyone has said anything yet but I just want to make sure. Thats the last thing my bank account needs! ohmy.gif
MadCowboy
Wow. I never even heard of it until now. Thanks for the info and showing us your sweet ride JUAN with the deep pockets!

Do those dropouts make it difficult switching out chainrings? Do you have to add or remove a link in the chain to do so? Doesn't look there is very much room for adjustment there.
germnest
Actually they make it easier. Basically you tighten the rear wheel and you're done with it. You never have to touch it again.

From then on everything happens at the BB. the eccentric BB is designed to give you a 3 link play.
If you want to change chain rings you loosen the 2 bolts that tighten the BB. Once loose you spin the eccentric BB to loosen the chain and thats it.

When you want to tighten or loosen your chain is when you realize what a great idea it is. All you do is loosen the bolts, spin the eccentric shell until the chain is exactly how you want it and tighten the bolts. Done.

No more of the loosening your rear wheel. getting the chain right. Tightening the rear wheel only to find out the chains now too tight or the rear wheel isnt aligned.
mr coasterbrake
add 1 more to the list. i have one i got in the late '80s. it needs a refinish - otherwise solid, though. i think it was originally blue, but it has a bad black rattle-can job on top.
AndyDiamond
WOW - that is nice!!!!

Just a note on the Kashimax Aero without teh 'Aero' logo on it - you don't see those much!

Ahh, now I see the BB "adapter" that makes it adjustable in the magazine photo. That's pretty cool. Thanks for the info Jaun!

Mr. Coasterbrake,
You have one too? Cool! a cruiser correct? Thats great too see them pop up like that. You think the original blue color is still under the black?
Dirty
awesome build...you just don't see those too often!!!

T
mr coasterbrake
yeah, mine's a cruiser. i think a little later one. it takes a "BMX 1 inch" headset and has triangle HT gussets (ala' redline). not sure about the paint. what i can see of the blue looks professional. the bike (part of one, anyway) came from a police auction and the whole thing was rattle-canned all put together, but there were places that didn't get covered.
Popeye
Just to keep the records straight, Popeye has four RRS cruiser framesets. Two built that I race every week (different gears) and two framesets on standby (Just in case I break one or both). I have broken only two in over 20 years of racing them.

The wonderful guys at Standard made me some customs off the exact geometry but they don't "feel" the same. I kinda like the flexy feel of the frame.
I am in the process of repairing one of the ones I broke. Replacing the head tube with 1 1/8" and a larger downtube and v-brake mounts. Will be racing that one next year if all goes well.

And that is one great looking bike!
germnest
Popeye, thats unreal. you have 4!
Post some pics of them and anyone else too. If you have an RRS lets see it.
RRS ROLL CALL!!

Beautiful 24

and thanks again for the pads and decals

germnest, I have a straddle cable that will fit. PM me your address and I'll mail it to you, I'd love to see the bike complete.

I've got an 87 Stumpjumper as a "beer run bike" - kind of a Mountain/Cruiser singlespeed thing. I put v-brakes on it, but kept the parts from the cantis. You need the dangling triangle too?

wow i didnt notice the GT/JMC style top tube behind the seat tube. That thing looks like a cross between a GT and Mongoose. I like it. Awesome builds. Both of em.
johnnieboy
Wow, cool build! One of those manufacturers few people rarely talk about.

First RRS I saw was a 20" test in BMX Racer magazine, circa 1980 - when I was growing up as a boy in New England. At the time I was just a 10/11 year old hyped on cool bikes - I remember thinking it looked sophisticated engineering even then.

Been back in Blighty since 1981 and never saw or heard of RRS over here. None at the races in my day.

That mag (BMX Racer) had a lot of great tests/reviews in that issue; first gen PK Ripper and Loop quad with Beckering on it, early OM flyer with Scot on it, Bassett 20" with bent top tube, torker MX with circular hole gussett piloted by Clint Miller, Gary Little John to name a few.

Anyone know what happened to that publication? It seemed to get eclipsed by BMX Action and Plus.

thats a sikk [please review the site FAQs] bike right there
Thumperpilot
Very NICE!

I have a white 20" and 24" until just a few years ago. I think Cruiser King bought the 24" and I'm not sure who scored the 20" I had them for a long time.

I'd like to know what ever happened to the 20" they made that had the 16" rear wheel on it. I remember a test on it in the mags. They said it was so fast out of the gate it should be illegal. LOL!! I remember it was a pretty crazy ride.

RRS was way ahead of the times for sure. Scott Towne has THE Baddest RRS I have eveer seen. Candy blue and blingin' I've saw it at Rockford a couple years ago. It was just SICK!
germnest
Man I'd love to see an original candy blue one. They came in white, black, a dark red, and candy blue. The blue was super sick.

Fantastic to see these awesome bikes resurfacing...They seemed super rare even BITD...
More please..... rolleyes.gif
Sumo178
OK here is some info that I noticed the other day when I was going through Waza's mags. I think it was late 78 BMX Action and there was a small write up on RRS modifications (not bike just the mod. It was cantilever brakes if I remember.) so that pre dates 1980. Also someone mentioned how they look like GT and JMC well the bike that had the mod was a Gary Turner built frame! We both went "now thats rare" when we saw it... lol

I'll get Waza to scan it next time i'm over there.
germnest
Sumo, thats interesting. Please post the scans if you can.
RRS frames were built by Trackmaster as far as I know. I guess the early RRS shop team riders rode modified GT bikes maybe?
XRRS
To let you know Donny Graves was the only team member to have a chrome RRS and he had it chromed. That was the only one I ever saw. I raced for them right after Darrell Young went to JMC until the end of RRS. Craig and I went to Kuwahara. Tony McDaniel was the first to race on a 24 and won at Anaheim naoinal. I have many great memories of my time with RRS., Saw Graig Kundig about 4 years ago and had a great time talking about those days. I Do still have a 24, Its all beat up but my kids still ride it around
