Here is Charles actual Crit Plate from when I sponsored him. This plate is when he was Factory CW and had many magazine shots in BMX Action, BMX Plus, and Super BMX with this plate on his bike.

I love Charles! I havn't talked to him in about 12-13 years...

Here is a window decal that I sold at the 1986 NBL Grands when I sponsored the that race.

I drew Charles as the rider...

Nice thread. I remember Charles racing his mongoose back in the day at Gilroy, Ca. ? Remember those days Chris ?

I remember.......

Charles was a fixture at our house we dragged his butt everywhere.

His calves were bigger than my thighs..

I still talk to Charles once a month or so, he was my best friend growing up. He's doing great busy with his kid and life. I'm still trying to talk him into making a trip to the Christmas Classic seeing my trip to the Winternationals didn't happen due to a death in the family. I was really looking forward to seeing him and Tommy Brackens.

Hopefully he'll make a showing but I have my work cut out for me to convince him.

Charles Towsend was a local at my local track when I was a kid but I was really shy back then. Although I think he was pretty quiet too. He's a couple years older than me. I've never even talked to him before but I witnessed one of the most memorable acts of BMX power that I have ever seen from Charles.

I was at a national in Bakersfield (a decade before I lived there) that was in the rodeo arena at the fairgrounds with the big grandstands next to it. I was sitting down by the end of the first straight watching practice and Charles was in the gate. He was riding either Boss or Free Agent colors at the time. He pedaled to the first jump and then shut it down. This was a long first straight. He was still totally hauling by the time he got to the end of the straight and was still jumping jumps even though he hadn't pedaled since the gate. I can still remember the sight and sound of that (Comp III tire buzz). It was pretty awesome.

he was a strong mo-fo....

The only other thing I've seen that was comparable was Shawn Texas at the national at the Cow Palace whenever that was...'83 or '84 I guess. There was the last turn that was pretty much flat and then there was this triple jump thing that was almost in the shape of like a "Z". Texas rolled around that turn pretty slow, took two pedals (left, right or whatever) and jumped that whole thing. I was like...holy crap!

Two strong mo-fo's
