I'm going to start lacing and truing my own wheels. I have some old parts to practice with but I need a good truing stand. Can anyone recommend a good one? Any advice? Thanks.

A decent truing stand can be bought from Dans compitetion, they are made by park for about 70.00
shipped, you can also by better ones there.

Can anyone recommend a specific make and model that is currently available? There are so many out there to choose from. Are there any that should be avoided? What should I look for in a truing stand? Thanks.

The park stands are the stand of choice in my mind, those TS-2's are nice but they are about $160. Most shops I've been to have them. I bought a Minoura stand for about $60 and it works great for 20" wheels, I've done a bunch of them with it.

The Park TS-2 is the end all wheel truing stand. Get that and the $25 base holder thingy to go with it. If you get something else then try out a TS-2 you will wish you spent the more $$ to get it because it is that much more friendly to the job.

Thanks for the inputs fellas... I ordered the truing attachment for my Park workstand and will play with that for a while... if I can get the hang of it, I'll probably reward myself by buying the professional grade Park truing stand... wish me luck!

The Park TS-5 truing stand attachment arrived lightning fast from bicycle-source.com on ebay. I installed it onto my workstand and mounted one of my worst wobbly wheels... a 24 x 1.75 with about 5mm of play side to side and also out of round... I've never trued a wheel in my life but after about an hour of doodling with it I got it within about 0.5mm which is close enough for government work... I'm pretty stoked!
I can definitely see where the payoff is with a better truing stand. The TS-5 is awkward and sometimes difficult to adjust. For 25 bucks it does an OK job if I only had to do a wheel every now and then, but if I plan to get busy with a few wheelsets this winter the Minoura or the TS-2 will be a worthwhile investment...
If you haven't tried truing a wheel, I would recommend giving it a go... this was a very positive learning experience!
