1981 Hutch Lil' Hole Shot mini racer
This is one of a handful of first-generation Hutch frames known to survive (manufactured by Profile Racing during the short-lived (year-long) relationship between the two companies). Profile clues are found in the high weld points of the rear triangle top, angle cuts at rear axle slot entrances, and most importantly, a drilled brake bridge.

This particular frame was in very sad shape and almost destined to scrap. Many have already read this frame's history recounted by Brian Hays in the drilled registry thread (link); however, I'm repeating it to tie the bike to the story. After Brian, the frame went through at least one other set of hands in Colorado before I got a hold of it and brought it back to its home state of Illinois.

I would like to thank Brian for not throwing it away (lol) and passing on the story, Tom (KIW) for inspiration and encouragement, Alan McCorkle for parts and advise, Johan (JJR), Rob (vintagechromoly), eBay (more lol), John DeBruin and any others I've talked to along the way, and finally Rodney, of course, for his brilliant work bringing it back to life... get well soon man!

History of this Lil' Hole Shot frame via Brian:
The frame you have was sold new by Little Ade's back in the early 80's to a young boy who rode for the Little Ades Racing team at the Pekin Livestock review building track at Pekin Park and Detweiller Park in Peoria. The boy was killed in a car accident, from what I understand, at some point in the 80's and the bike (or frame at least) ended up back at the bikeshop. I have no info on when the frame damage occurred in the timeline but anyway......

Fast forward 25 plus years. Mike (Ade's son) who took over the shop when his father passed away, called me to help him clean out "the hot box" which was a storage trailer at the back of the bike shop property. We dug out a Race Inc RA10 (I still have) and about 15 other bikes and framesets. Reynolds Quads, loop Mini Rippers, Elf Mini, Mongooses, Hutches, loop PK Ripper. Just a ton of great stuff in this trailer from BITD. I bought alot of what I could afford at the time and Ebayed the rest for Mike to put the money back into the shop. We did real well with the endevor. This Lil' Hole Shot frame was in this bunch of stuff.

The headtube had a huge nasty repair at the top tube/down tube junction and had been ridden hard. Because of the shape of the frame and the repair, with me not being Hutch savy yet, I sold it on Ebay for him for $50, not realizing the significance of the drilled brake bridge. Mike and I talked about the frame itself and the story of the young boy who rode it trying to decide whether to sell it or junk it. I knew enough at the time to know that because it was Hutch, someone would want it. Glad to see you got it and that you have done it such great justice.

Here are another couple pics... the Lil' Hole Shot with its "separated-at-birth" twin: A 1982 Profile Magnatanium Mini that I adopted recently and groomed as a companion to the other. Although very similar, the frames are slightly different in that the Profile has a 7/8" seat mast, a road-sized head-tube, a tiny 1" (non-threaded) bottom bracket shell, a hole in the rear drop out, the brake bridge of course ... and comes in around a pound lighter overall!

Beautiful builds! I wish I could figure out how to build a mini.

Climb onboard, Lee! We're taking over the WORLD! One mini at a time! Seriously, isn't it great to see more people busting out the mini builds? I love it!

Very classy bikes Ron. Be proud....and submit those pics to VBMX for the calendar competition!
psycho
I had a chance to see these two bikes this past weekend at PEP's. They are just amazing. I have no reason in my mind to justify why a mini is so cool. They just are. Oh and by the way nice expert racer too. Awesome builds.
rick
those campy cranks are bitchin!!!
z-man99
Stunning build. It's great to see the mini's getting more attention, too.

I'm with Psycho....I carried the holeshot when we unloaded his car at my gathering....I spent a LOT of time looking at all the details. Stunning does not even come close to the details of these bikes.

Top Shelf my friend. Otto will be tearing up the track in a year or so on 1 of them wink.gif

Yea, the 'Gil Grissom' of bike collecting weilds a mean camera! laugh.gif

Looking at Ron's pics makes me want to upgrade my cheezy, little 3.2 megapixel Sony.

Fantastic little bikes there! I commend you on your excellent taste and delivery.

Awesome, just awesome Ron. I love the sprinkling of red on the Holeshot, specifically the red spoke nipples with the red Phil logo and bearings; and also the red chain ring bolts. Of course those cranks are sweet too. I can't wait to see them up close and in person. Nice!

So, I have two opinion poll questions about the Lil' Hole Shot for you guys (to make it even tighter):

1. TIRES
Right now the Hutch has Panaracer Conquers (front and rear) and the Magnatanium Mini has CyclePro Snakebellies (front and rear). All four were NOS and have not been glued or taped yet. Would you guys:
a. leave them as-is (for uniformity ... And the labels match better lol)...
b. swap them (move the cycle pros to the Hole Shot)...
c. split them up: run a Panaracer in front with a Snakebelly on the rear (for both bikes)? I just got to thinking: wasn't it was fairly common to run a snakebelly on the rear only when racing (with some sort of a knobby up front)?

2. GRIPS
The Lil' Hole Shot has the later bubble font (2nd gen? before the all-cap sans serif) mini grips... also I don't believe mini grips were even out yet. Any recommendations on cool replacement grips. still solid black... and suitable for a '81 mini:
a. 1st gen (full size) a'me (lowercase with thin-line serifs)?... do these exist?
b. Oakley ____ ?
c. _____________ ?

Oh, and thanks for all the great comments above! has really made my week... and a good end to a project that hit so many hurdles along the way.

d) sell/trade the Panaracers for john's comp V's and Snakebelly.
