Glad you all like the bike, the orange color was an option back in the 1976 catalog. I was described as a " Now " color option. Red, yellow and orange.

Thanks
Rick

Nothing looks as good as original Motomags. The raw cast aluminum just says "BMX" from 1975. I can still remember unpacking our first Mongoose Motomag with Motomag I wheels 31 years ago like it was yesterday.

Now for the payoff... how do you clean Motomag I wheels so that they look like that??? Beautiful bike, by the way. I think if I had a bike that beautiful, I'd be tempted to ride it!

Duro Aluminum cleaner with a brass bristle brush worked wonders for me. I had polished a small spot years ago and it really contrasted with the rest of the casting. By leaving the Duro on the spot for an hour and it sort of etched the polished part. The wheels will almost glow when you're done...but they will oxidize very slightly overnight and look like new "out of the box".

I glass bead blasted them at 60 psi. I used an 80 grit with a little walnut shells in the mixture. Polished and sanded the side walls with a palm sander 600 grit......no water or chemicals.....

I do those any day over motomag IIs......they take 15 hours per wheel.......and a week for my hands and elbows to stop hurting.....

Sweet! that bike screams "ride me" like a ten dollar hooker! biggrin.gif

Ashtabulous!.. What a great color too..

I love it on just about anything, but even more on a Goose or a '70 Boss 302 Mustang.

Great build....nice job on the motomags.....classy all around.

That is absolutely fantastic! I love that colour.
What colour is it? Do you have a paint code? Is it as "flouro" in the flesh as the pics posted?
I feel I should be listening to "One night in Bangkok" by Murray Head while watching you and Waza go head-to-head on the Vintage chessboard biggrin.gif

I love your bike and of course the colors! Awesome! I too am getting ready to start my own Motomag Mongoose project for the winter and am pretty excited......I don't know a whole lot about them, whats with the difference in wheels like the Motomags (I) and Motomag II wheels? Sorry to sound stupid, but I am a newbie when it comes to these cool bikes.

I also need parts to build up my ride too if anybody want to help out, need some Motomag wheels, bars, cranks (Astabula?), pedals and of course stickers. Thanks and cheers

Glad to hear you all like the bike. It is tough going up against Waza. The paint is as fluid as it looks, it seems like it is still wet......I worked with Chip @ C4Labs to come up with just the right "orange". I wanted to do a color that I hadn't seen before on a Mongoose. I am very happy with the way this one turned out.

Parts List:
NOS Three arrows chainring
NOS Mesinger seat
NOS Hunt Wilde Grips
NOS Union Pedals
NOS Tange Headset AW-27
NOS ACS chain
Restored Black Oxide cranks,stem,forks
I hand painted the ashtabula letters in silver, with model paint
cheng shin tires
Restored Motomag Is with Bendix 70 brakes and NOS brake arm
Polished seat clamp(original)

When you say "restored black oxide cranks, stem and forks", what do you mean and how do you do it? Those Ashtabula parts look better than when they were actually new. Well, as best as I can remember from over 30 years ago... LOL

Really nice build !! Hey Rick, do you know other the available colors were for that year ?
Thanks,
Pieter

According to the 1976 Mongoose Catalog the color choices were, "Now" colors; red, yellow and Orange. Nickel finish was also another option.

To restore the cranks, stems and forks, I use Eastwood's cold water Black oxide kit. I glass bead the pieces, then soak them in Oxalic acid to remove the rust, then treat them in the black oxide, finish off with WD-40 to preserve them. They suggest using the clear spray but I just give them a good soaking for a few days then wipe off the excess and install the pieces.......hope that helps
