WOW - that is by far the coolest Team EVER! I wish I didn't let that one go but you did just an amazing job with it. I have another little secret NOS project in the works too.
I don't think anyone will be able to top this one due to it being the only know Team Mini at this point.
Killer job Waza. You more than likey have the greatest Mongoose collectionin the World!
Show the bottom bracket - it really is a Team Mini. I cannot say enough on how perfect this bike looks!

THAT is cool.
Not sure I'd use blue pedals & chain but it looks alright.

Oct 2 2007, 06:20 PM
Thanks guys. I used blue union pedals cos they are alloy cages and lighter for a smaller rider as well as 165 dura-ace cranks. The blue chain was used cos when i put the blue tyres on, the blue chain just worked as there is no black anywhere, apart from the seat of course.
The frame is re-powdered, but the forks are NOS. IM stoked with the close match. Roberto powdered the frame for me. Its so much nicer in the flesh. Cranks are re-annoed silver.

Yep another classic! That finish is the business! Yet again, the Waza and Roberto team come through with amazing results...loving the suede seat! Is that NOS or did you get it recovered? Either way jackpot!

Well Well, look what Waza pulls out of the shed this time. No doubt this is another top notch build. Again, the attention to detail is Awesome. I don't know how I will compete with a " one of a kind" build. Definately a beautiful bike.
It looks as though it is my move.

So did you do the blue powder of the original nickel/chrome or was that re-finished as well??
I was going to do the samethinng but the chrome wasn't clean enough (IMO). Now isn't that the same process as the chrome-o-blue Hutch from Rockford07?
waza007

It was Candy powder over new chrome.

I found this site earlier this year while searching online to replace two mid-1970s Mongooses that my brother and I lost when my mother's house in south Mississippi was destroyed by a storm.
I had no idea that hundreds of Mongooses existed that had been restored to better than new condition. I mean, they didn't look that good when they came out of the box from BMX Products!
Over the years I've raced Mongoose, Torker, Patterson, MCS, Revcore, Boss, and GT frames... but none of them meant BMX as much to me as those early Mongoose Motomag bikes. They were heavy as tanks, but they flew straight without bending or breaking, which was essential for a young BMXer living on a lawn-mowing, pizza-making budget.
You guys are amazing. I may not even need to replace the bikes we lost now that I've found this site (however I am still seeking a 1976 or 1977 nickel Motomag long frame and Redline nickel forks

). I can simply sit back and admire your interpretations of the bikes that were the foundation of my BMX adventure.
My hat is off to you gentlemen. Thank you for preserving so many great memories for so many of us.

Looks fantastic!
What did they use originally or was it paint (don't remember). I know CYC also had some translucent colors over chrome as well and it peeled off (usually). Obviously powder not the samething.. just curious.
Great bike.
My bike shop had that very bike in the shop and I was going to buy it 78-79? and the an Ames Stormer came in (complete bike) and I bought that instead... The mini goose was cool though.

Skip Hess interview......
27: From Chuck Whitcomb: What was the paint/candy finish on the Team Goose frames during the 70's? What method was used to create the anodized look of the burgundy and blue Team frames.
Skip: The candy look was originally transparent powder coat over chrome plating.
My frame is redone and the forks are NOS. Same process for both with quite a nice match!

After looking how nice your 79 team minigoose came out using blue powder over the original nickel/chrome i got started on my 79 team minigoose. There is on thing i have been questioning myself about the method used on on the 79 team frames .I'm not sure they where powder coated back in 78,79,and 80 because the color comes off very easy if they where powder coated.
Skip: The candy look was originally transparent powder coat over chrome plating.
I know that the later team mongoose frames used red or blue transparent over a silver base and have a different look to them, the color is harder to remove like powder should be.
Was transparent powder even out in 79 that you could coat over chrome plating with out a silver base coat . I was always told it had to have a silver base coat for it to adhere to chrome .

Haywardbmxer - are you one of the Patterson brothers?

waza007
Oct 17 2007, 04:07 PM
The early ones were candy powder over nickel, later were over chrome. NO silver base was used as far as i know. Think about production costs and time. Much easier to chrome every frame you have, then coat it with what ever you want IE: candy powder, black chrome or just leave it as chrome. The reason it flaked off was not as good quality as powdercoating these days and also it was a real quick and thin coat, done in real quick fashion as they had 100's to do every day. Have a close look at a NOS candy powder job, it isnt anywhere near Lewis & Sons or C4 quality.

They actually did go to powder over silver paint right before changing the drop out style and still with gusset. 1981 ish I think. I don't remember it BITD, but have seen it over the past couple years. No nickel or chrome on the blue or red over silver models. I'm sure it was a cost savings move as well.

WOW that blue is killer. Great job.

Oct 18 2007, 01:15 PM
The red and blue transparent candy colors were never applied to a chrome finish. Early on it was transparent color over nickel, all BMX Products produced frames during the early days were nickel plated or powdercoated.
The switch as Ben mentioned happened in 1981, when chrome replaced nickel on the 100% chromoly frames the few Team Mongoose frames still produced were finished with a two stage finish, red or blue OVER silver powdercoating.
The reason the early red & blue flaked off has nothing to do with the quality changing over the years. Powdercoating does not properly adhere to a polished surface, back then or today.

Hey Waza, did you have any issues with the rear tire hitting the brake bridge? What about getting the rear brake shoes to align with the rim? What brakes did you use on it? I'm starting to put one together as a Christmas present for my 7 yr old and it just doesn't seem right.
By the way, nice bike!

I beg to differ. I sold a chrome Team frame and it still had the red powdercoat in the BB shell. And yeah I do know the difference between chrome and nickel. I have both.
