Full Version: New Re-issue 1" Landing Gear Forks
VintageBMX.com > VintageBMX Talk > Vintage BMX Racing
Todd Lyons
Hey guys, I know I started this topic about a year ago in a different thread. But that thread was wiped out when Vintage lost some of the site.

Here's the current deal:

We ARE going to make a 1" Threaded Landing Gear fork. We will make them in 20" and 24" sizes, and MAYBE a 26" size. Here's my Q's:

For the 20" version...

1. How long should the steer tube be? I have info that it should be 5.5", not including the 3/16" race collar on the bottom.

2. How much should the threads come down the steer tube? Is 1.5” correct?

For the 24" version...

1. How long should the steer tube be?

2. How much should the threads come down the steer tube?

For the POSSIBLE 26" version...

1. How long should the steer tube be?

2. How much should the threads come down the steer tube?

Any color suggestions for the forks?

The steer tubes WILL have some identifiable stamp on the steer tube to indicate that these forks are not from the 80’s. So no worries there.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

outriding
sounds great! I dont know about the sizes though.
(the identification could be on the dropouts so you can identify them if they are mounted???)
mr coasterbrake
what about making them all to fit a 5" headtube (6 1/2"ish steerer tube) and threading them far enough that you could cut it to fit a 4" headtube? that way one fork covers all the bases (well, i guess maybe not a Moosegoose... wink.gif )
rimspoke2
Chrome and Black would be a good start for colors.
agentheinz
Gotta have chrome of course!

I'm with this guy^^^stick to basic black...so many different colors out there and you gotta be cost-effective. Someone wants a different color they'll be sending it with the frame for powder/paint anyway.

Maybe include the decal WITH but not ON the fork, for instances like this.

Todd, I was suppose to get this info to your other guy last week and failed to do so. I'll get the measurements tonight and post here tomorrow morning unless someone has a set of forks close they can measure before that.
cruzertodd
please say there are no canti mounts
rimspoke2
Maybe optional canti mounts for 26" but none on the others please. CT
Burbbully
Holes on the dropouts?
Todd Lyons
Holes are already in the dropouts. Scroll to the bottom: http://sebikes.com/2008/frames.asp

And there will not be any canti mounts.

Thanks.

I agree, but what's wrong with Moosegoose's?? No canti mounts on the 26'ers please. I would love some for heck, just to have for something upcoming.

Forget the 26", it may devalue the ones that are still out there.
But, if you are going to do them, Keep the same holes in the d/o,
Chrome is cool and universal.
Make them to fit the largest headtube, which is what? about 5 - 5-1/2" or so?
Extend the threads as far as possible for a more universal fit (so those w/o
headtube threaders can simply cut the steertube to fit).
Would the be made in the good ole' USA?
Chromoly of course, heat treated? Or just mass produced somewhere in
bumphut? Quality is a concern, decals provided of course -separate/ on the side
to apply by users consent.
My 2 cents.
BTW, what's the deal w/ these
http://cgi.ebay.com/SE-Racing-LANDING-GEAR...1QQcmdZViewItem
1-1/8" on the bay, but descrip differs from the pic that shows solid d/o with only one small
hole for the axle retainer? Definately would not want 1" threaded w/this style.
BRIAN HAYS
Why in God's name would I want to buy a BRAND NEW set of forks and have to CUT the steerer to to fit the MOST POPULAR 20" HEADTUBE EVER MADE (std 4") ??? Like Todd said, they should be to the specs of the original threaded LG forks BUT CLEARLY MARKED.

I was referring to the 26ers.
I've a few cruisers that could stand a fork upgrade..
many w/varying headtube sizes.
I would think twice about resizing a vintage OE fork.
New fork, made overseas.. who cares, looks cool, could put on
just about any frame without rethreading and no disregard about
fouling up a perfect old school piece. I think everybody owns a hacksaw
and if the price was right, compared to the real deal, would consider it
disposeable. Great upgrade for that rider w/the old Wald or Schwinn or
who know what pos fork on it currently.
The carpet queens, well they're already perfect. Not gonna put a new
SE fork on that 80's ride now are ya?
Well, a retro fork from a reputable builder may be just a little more
to the liking to spruce up that perfect '80s build.
The proof is in the puddin.
Besides the word was MAYBE, Of course they'll sell if you make them
regardless of steertube size. Hot product. We will find a way to make
them work on something. Genuine SE product, that's gotta mean something.
Thumperpilot
If you make them, please put me down for a set of 26'ers TL. You know I'll roll a chrome set.

The 26" fork on ebay does have the 3 holes, as pictured in the photo in the item description.

Todd, Can i suggest stamping them outside the headtube like outriding said? Trust me on this one. laugh.gif
NBKA-SENSEI
This ones gonna be touchy!!
yes, they should be clearly marked. and yes I think they should be made a little longer, so they can be put on any thing. they are a remake who cares if there not just like the orginals, ( if you want those, go buy'em.) these are a rider alternative with good looks.....
Great idea, basic colors, w/decals in package not on forks. ( so we can get them powderd our colors. then apply.)
IMO.. biggrin.gif
Natty1972
Make them in White Color or even Raw would be great!!!! tongue.gif
atxbmx
Make the 26" forks LONG and without canti mounts, please. I need a set desperately for a 26" Champion rider.

Thanks in advance!
Jimmy
I would love a set of both 20" and 24" in the standard headtube length as Brian stated!! I am very happy to see this happen!
Criscobath
24" and/or 26" would be cool. I agree, chrome is the deal, w/ decals on the side (not applied).
agentheinz
With a chrome 26" fork, I could make my Powerlite 3-bar a 26 incher! The rear fits either, with the slotted brake bridge and all.

OOPS. Sorry, I'm an idiot. tongue.gif

Will the tube diameter be beefy like the old ones? The new ones are too small...
Todd Lyons
I plan to bring these forks into our P&A program next year. They should be pretty spot on. I still need to do a bit more research, though. Thanks.

Any possabilities in making an aluminum or Ti set?
cheez
Put me down for a set of 20" in chrome Todd. What about chrome, Brown, Tan, SE blue, and raw finish for folks to have powdered any collor they want. If they weren't offered for 5" head tubes than don't make them. Talk Gork into remaking the old proline and microline forks again. See if Redline is willing to take care of their fallowers like Todd is taking care of SE's. Same goes for Schwinn. You know I am very surprised that some Mom and Pop frame manufacturer has not cornered the market on some high quallity repops of the Redline and Schwinn forks. There are number of people out there with frames and no forks to go with them. I know I could use a set of prolines, but those things are harder to find than hens teeth.
