Full Version: So....who'd Bikes Inspire You To Build?
VintageBMX.com > VintageBMX Talk > Freestyle BMX
PEP
I've been thinkin about this for a while & have found myself on many different builds, both race and freestyle, looking at other members bikes and getting inspired to do something similar or even a replica of what they did.

I understand the originality factor as a builder/restorer, but some bikes just do it for me.

what about you?

builders who have made a mark for me: PKripped's JU-6, OS-BOBO's Wilkerson GT (prob my favorite bike)

Let's see em or hear about it.....
NBKA-SENSEI
Randys builds are beautiful, he came over to my house one day with his Sting and his Moosegoose.
I feel in love, and 8 yrs later, I 'm in deep......
Dam you man...... laugh.gif tongue.gif
RIDE A BIKE
For me it is Tim,twinntoptuber, tone, dan, and ALL YOU GUYS!!!!!! Some builds use LOTS of CASH and as some DO NOT! That is like going to the shops BITD if you had the $$$$$$$$$.$$ you got the pro parts you realy wanted but if you didnot you got the next best parts your CASH can buy biggrin.gif All the builds you guys build just bring back the GOOD OLD DAYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! smile.gif
almasterb
I like them all, but the bikes that inspire me the most are Timo's. The parts, colors and details are perfect. I also enjoy the photos and stories that go along with his bikes.

I had found the site and had started looking at old school bikes again but when I saw Hudson's white Dyno Pro Compe with all the accessories that is when I got inspired....I still want to build one up just like it but non team. White with one piece cranks and GT mags, one of these days.

For me it was Muxster's builds that inspired me to go that extra mile and make that extra effort.
PEP
Mux....

totally forgot about his stuff. He definitely "got it" when it came to the build. Chris Baron comes to mind, Jay stark & the Hyper, VDC, CW Phaze.......good grief.

It's funny that we see so many bikes come thru here & forget about them until displayed @ rockford.

God, bob Bholman (sp), Martin-bike.com....the list keeps growing.
Axlepeg
LOTS of guys with great builds here. Much respect. Far too many to mention (seriously, I started this reply and quickly realized it would take forever...and I'd inevitably forget somebody). But if I had to give a name, and it's a guy I hardly know, I'd have to say Ray - the FlanelCamel. Original, Creative, Tight.

Thanks for the props...the photo of which you speak. I still have all that swag...actually another full uniform with shoes and stuff too...gotta build up my 88 pro compe. Been slacking...need rscott decals...

I'd have to say that i was inspired by TTT's builds. Thats where i got the bad habit of liking the rare frames/parts. His builds are always clean too. Also always like BrianP's builds and SmokinEndo's...great stuff put out by both those knuckleheads...

PEP, thanks man i'm glad you like it.. that is one of my favorites too...
what really got me inspired was going to rockford in 05 for the first time...
when i was saw the bikes for the first time it really hit me.
also, after that finding out who's bikes they were and then finally meeting everone did it for me..
oh, and wilkerson....... biggrin.gif

Timo Baby! You know hes got the goods. Always perfect too.
Gotta Luv em'

BOB O's Wilkerson GT is definitely my favorite build ever.

Timo is tied for 1st....details and originality....hotness.
Pauly
The builds that I appreciate most are the ones that are built as or like riders.
Brake cables that are low profile, seatposts, bars, stems all adjusted to usable angles and levels are what I look at.
In this respect it's hard to compare to Timo's builds. We all know that Timo builds all of his bikes as riders and actually does ride the poop out of them. Nothing against the queen museum pieces, but they just don't do it for me like the builds keeping the rider in mind.

I built this one the way I thought Timo would do it...his style is sooo tight (probably cuz he's an artist)...LOVE all of his builds
serva
T I M O !

2FRESH TIMO... BY a long shot... He has the best collection of classic and rare freestyle stuff... he has Great Photography skills, a fun sense of respect for the original bikes.. and also how they were used during "their time"... check out his Skyway Street Beat.. and his OZONE
it's incredibly Inspiring!

I would say jessiejames candy red trickstar inspired me,and brian britt (smokin endo) the attention to detail is sick.I mean just look at his display's in rockford.Keep building B.

In all honesty, when I think of the fact that it's 2007 and I can come here and see bikes from my youth, I'd have to say they all inspire me in some way.
Having said that, here's some that stand out to me.

• Timo - What can you say, the man's an artist at everything he does! Riding, building, photography, music, art, etc.
• Serva - Clean builds, always stylish
• Roberto - Not only great builds, but awesome restorations
• Smokin' Endo - Always goes the extra mile with his builds
• Brian P - Come on, it's Brian P, he's practically a legend!
• 1niceharo - Always has the custom details that make a build stand out

I could go on, because as I mentioned, there's always something that inspires me when I see a build. I only mentioned guys who usually post in the freestyle section, but there's plenty of guys who go big on the racing side as well.
Maurice Meyer
There wasn't a lot of freestyle building going on here when I first got here so it was really TIM who's stuff caught my eye first off. Particularly, he had a G-Boy which is what my brother who got me into bikes had back in the day. The details and quality of his photos blew me away.
  • Todd Costantino definitely got me fired up to do the TA when he was doing the orange Street Beat. Those are my two favorite bikes that I'll never part with.
  • Timo's builds are awesome but his writeups really made me a fan of putting out the story of the build. I don't think a lot of outsiders would understand what the deal is with these bikes so I like to writeup the story to help bridge the divide.
  • JeffV came out early with a first gen Haro that was super cool.
  • Brian P has that crazy shop! I got to see a true "Staduim" tire again for the first time since 1982 or so. I love those kinds of mini flashbacks.
  • Smokin' Endo's got the display section nailed. Not to mention the bikes to deserve the work on the displays. Don't let that pump go out again!
  • Flanelcamel's got some serious VDC action going over there.
  • What about Jay and DansHaros and those insane Haros?!?! Lordy, lordy.
  • Waza007 has like a zillion bikes - all super nice.
  • My man Ben Rose in SF who doesn't come on here much but has some serious cruisers not only inspires but has helped with a lot of parts. We go way back before the Curb Dogs and always fired each other up whether riding, building or just trying to hookup with some girls! Ha.
I don't know: there are lots more but really, I'm more like humbled and thinking "I am not worthy" when I see some of these bikes. I've got some things in the works but I'm slowing down a lot. Just seeing the price of Dia-Compe brakes is putting me in check since most of the era I'm interesting in would include those.

Rather than the builds, the main thing that inspires me around here is the coolness of everyone involved. We all have to deal with eBay but working with people here reminds me of the days when you'd buy or trade with your friends just to keep your bike rolling.

I read through this thread and could picture the various bikes as folks referenced them. Guess those really do stand out.

I miss seeing 1niceharo's input around here, maybe he'll be back this winter?
I was impressed with TIM's online photo's but maybe it was mostly MUX's photo skills, as I wasn't quite as taken by them when I saw em in person at Rockford.

the Freestyle bikes struck me as more awesome when I saw them in person, especially the Wilkerson build.
oldfreestyler
I've always liked Paulie's and Stephens builds. I've always envied Stephen for getting his grubby little paws on R.L.'s original bike from RAD, lol. Currently I'm dreaming of someday building an old school shop like Brian P's garage! LOL.
2FRESH
I am humbled with all the props coming in from you guys. I am speechless. This means a lot coming from fellow hobbyists with same minds. Thank You all so much.

If i had to name someone specific who has inspired me lately, i would have to say it's Maurice and the spirit of the Curb Dogs. That's who/what pushed me during the Boss Freestyler build (the Vander memorial bike) last summer and this year with the Carraro BMX nostalgia build. Loosely quoting Axlepeg, those two bikes in particular were very close to a spiritual experience, lol! Seeing ALL the builds going on here from EVERYONE from day to day, inspires me alot and always gives me new ideas.

Thanks again.
