Pete Porker
Hi guys, looks like there'll be 2 old school get togethers in QLD this year ! Here's some info from Johnny Chopper -

Hey Guys, I've been working with Pete Porker to organise the 3rd annual Aussie VBMX gathering in QLD around October this year and we've hand picked a date and track. Therefore I've also been working with the Vice Pres and Sectrectary of Ashmore BMX club on the Gold Coast to host the event on the 13th October 2007 at their Open day and all systems are GO!

Ashmore BMX club is very pleased to host this event for us and to help us make another slice of Aussie BMX history. Ashmore BMX has tonnes of Aussie BMX history including hosting several QLD title events and the Aussie titles in 1983. They've recently rebuilt their track with 2 "Olympic" straights and it looks awesome! They are allocating us a great spot for the gathering and there will be some great racing to watch on the day also. It promises to be a BIG race meeting already and I think the gathering will bring more riders and spectators also.

I will post the relevant info shortly. I should have some flyers in my hand in a week or so. This event is 3mths away which should give everyone a chance to get organised to make it. I hope the interstate representatives put in a bigger effort than QLD did last year at Terrigal and maybe some of you guys who race might like to nominate for the race meet.

This event is currently brought to you buy Johnny Chopper, Pete Porker and Ashmore BMX. If anyone else would like to get onboard with some sponsorship please email either of us. There will be shirts printed again this year to mark the event. Please pass the event info onto anyone interested.

Cheers,
Gary.

More info -
G'day again,

Ok, I've just received awesome news from the Vice Pres of the Ashmore club that they are very keen to have some special events with our vintage bikes and riders. Ashmore is a club known for putting on a great race meet and having heaps of fun also especially during the lunchtime break. Some suggestions so far are:

Vintage BMX race on old school (pre '86) bmx bike. This would be one race like a display etc. No probs if there is more than one moto. I'll have to check about licences etc as you may have to be licenced to race in it. Or maybe unlicenced riders can sign a disclaimer of some sort??? So you better dust off your old Redline gear if it still fits you Mr Clunne.

Bunnyhop competition.

Jump length competition.

Wheelie competition.

Flatland display/comp.

Trophy for best cruiser and best 20". Judged by peoples choice (the punters and the old schoolers)

These are simply suggestions. Please post up any ideas over the next week as we all need to work this out together within the next week or so, so the advertising can be started asap. We will be limited by time, so I'll find out this info. Some events can of course occur when regular racing is on.

The race meeting will be called the Dirt Demon Challenge, since they were so impressed with Mark Stevens from Dirt Demons who built the new track.

I'll be finding out more tomorrow and I'm heading down there next week for some gates and to check out the track and to pick an area for the vintage show/events.

I'm also going to check out about having QLD's first Vet Pro Race for over 35's. We HAVE to get a Vet Pro class started up here.

Cheers guys!

Sounds cool Gary and Pete!

Thanks for picking up the slack there pete i hadnt had chance to post the info over here.

I like the idea of unlicensed riders racing in the exhibition race-maybe a special 1 day or 1 race licence.

Other OS gathering suggestions.

Have a panel of OS experts available where people can bring their OS items and the experts can identify and date them.

Have a OS number plate display. Remind all to bring number plates-especially ones that are still in race condition.

.....or how about a "see how far you can bend my Z rim before it breaks demo"

Cheers

Antiques Roadshow LOL.

Number plate display sounds good. 1 day race licence. I might even have a go if that happens.
ROBERTO
Hey Roy, you could display your broken number plate to demonstrate the horrors of ebay.
COASTY
Sounds like a great time to live in QLD.
I'll be at both events I hope. Just need to juggle a few things but I'll do my best.
Oh and the antique roadshow idea sounds good.
I'll be waiting at the end of the line with a wad of cash! I won't have to go lookin'! lol

News just in on the ashmore gathering

G'day Guys,

I got down to Ashmore last night and the new track is looking awesome! A couple of minor changes still need to be done and the top coat needs to be applied also. I believe this will be done on the 4th August.

I met with the comittee and we talked about the 3rd VBMX gathering and here's what came out of the discussion.

Bunnyhop comp - Is definately on. Age brackets yet to be determined.

Jump comp - cancelled due to lack of room.

Vet Pro - Is definately on. $400 prize money + noms (minus levies) if 12 riders or more nominate. Pre nom prizes also. More details to come.

Pre '86 Race - This race can be done as one race in the break as a special event or as part of the whole day with 3 motos and finals. You have to race a pre '86 bike in this race. It's just for fun and to let the kids see the old bike racing around the track. It costs $15 for a day license if you don't have a current BMXA licence. The track will not charge nominations for this event, only the $15 for your licence. We can organise our own prizes for this event also. I NEED TO KNOW WHO IS DEFINATELY INTERESTED IN RACING IN THIS CLASS AS THE PROMOTION MATERIAL HAS TO GO TO PRINT EARLY NEXT WEEK. IF I DON'T GET ENOUGH INTEREST BY THE END OF THE WEEKEND WE WON'T BE HAVING IT. PLEASE PM ME OR EMAIL ME AT johnnychopper@nunet.com.au if your interested.

BMX bike show classes -
Best pre 1980 BMX 20"
Best pre 1986 BMX 20"
Best pre 1986 BMX 24"/26"
Best pre 1989??? BMX Freestyle 20".

These will be judged by peoples choice with a ballot box style setup. No w*nker judges who think they know it all. If you think I've missed a class etc, please let me know. Don't bother asking for mid school classes, it ain't gonna happen. What should be the cut off year for freestyle?

The race meet is a twilight meet starting at 2pm. Gates/noms from 12.00-1.30.

Any q's in general please email me asap. johnnychopper@nunet.com.au

Cheers,
Gary.

Woo hoo I'm racin'. I'll race my goose. I can't wait. Bring it on boys.
Pete Porker
I'm in for a race ! I'm gunna need to start training !
84profile
Yup, you can count me and the Hutch in for a bit of racing action...I'll have to strap on my head cam for a laugh!!
Mattblack
Can you race with toe clips
ROBERTO
I think Dec 89 should be the cut off date for oldschool freestyle, the sport greatly changed in 1990. Just my opinion.
ROBERTO
Ballot box voting is a great idea too.

Will there be outlined voting critereia for voters to consider when picking their favourites?
Jarvi
Agree with Roberto about the freestye cutoff. That's about when bashguards came in didn't they?

As for the voting, each bike probably needs a card to indicate what class it is in along with a number or some other thing unique to identify it. If we vere voting then it's easy to identify but Joe Public might need something more.
rsrichie
These are all great ideas keep them coming and im sure Gary, Pete and myself will take them all into consideration to create the most organised Annual gathering to date.
monkeybiscuits

Hmm, maybe the Team Helium Quicky needs a holiday in Queensland....

Complete with the original 1983 Age Titles scrutineering sticker which was applied to the back of the numberplate back then...

Kurt.
She looks great Professor. Gotta love a Helium Quicky.

Your front tyre may not take the strain however!!!
AjayVBMX
Yes, that sure is a seriously old Cheng Shin.

Still holds air though....
rsrichie
JC has made up some flyers for the event if anyone wants see them or print them out to put in you local bike shop check them out here. Gathering Flyers
Ill proberly be driving up and may have room for a bike or 2 if anyone was thinking of flying up but didnt want the expence of carting a bike up. Id offer a seat in the car as well but the other half and the dogs want to go to the sisters-in-laws place at tweed heads.
QuicksilverBMX
Ajay let me know if you come across another helium, Its the last frame I am chasing.

In fact, if anyone can get me a helium frame a spotters fee will be handed over
COASTY
Thats a cool bike Ajay. I look forward to racing against you on it with my motomag!
AjayVBMX
Maaate...the only thing I'll be racing you in will be downing a schooner.

I have two excuses for this statement:

1. I'm old, tubby and unfit.
2. I have a back injury that prevents me from doing pretty much anything about it.

So my on track activities might be limited to taking photos, I think.

and of course a STATIC display....

Mate, I don't think I'll be coming now. For some reason, I have recevied no info about this Gathering by email, even though I thought I had registered interest from the very beginning.

I would have liked to have come and was prepared to fly up just to be there, but naturally, I'm not going to spend that money if there's no details on what's happening. Pity. sad.gif

Ajay, theres been plenty of info posted here and on Vintageoldschool. We all had to read about it. Nobody sent me a personal invite. rolleyes.gif

Yes, I read the stuff that was on the web sites, but that didn't answer that questions I had.

I was expecting there to be more social activities associated with the gathering, like maybe a BBQ or a dinner. Something to make the event a bit more special. I sent some emails to try and find out what (if anything) was happening in that respect and got no replies at all. So naturally, I was a bit disappointed. wink.gif

I'm sure you would expect a reply to an email you send asking a question, eh Coasty? rolleyes.gif
QuicksilverBMX
I DIDNT GET AN INVITE EITHER, I CANT BELIEVE IT - ME!

I was going to come, but since I havent had a private jet organised with a 1st class seat for my ride I dont think i'm wanted.

p.s even though there is an abundance of info sprayed across 3 websites, thats not good enough?!?!
COASTY
LOL @ Reece!

Ajay, I would like a reply to an email I sent. But I also realise the guys organising this event have families and business' to run. I added my replies to the threads posted everywhere and have not missed out on attending or racing.
Here in Qland things are very relaxed. We don't do corporate functions. We ride our bikes and maybe have a beer or two. Thats it. If we needed a hall of fame function or a memories video night we'll leave that for Rockford.
It's not the done aussie thing. We are know for our casual attitudes and our sunshine. Oh and our repo's laugh.gif

You guys sure are sensitive...and defensive. Why? rolleyes.gif

I emailed one of the organisers who said on these forums that he was helping organising/promoting the event, to ask a simple question so that I could work out whether I should plan to go up to Brissy on the Saturday night or not...not a difficult thing to answer methinks. Wouldn't take more than a minute to reply.

No suggestion of corporate functions, private jets or even halls of fame. laugh.gif

I don't know how you can decide unilaterally what is (or isn't) the done Aussie/QLD thing. I can assure you that the Vintage MX QLDers do a damn good job at making a real EVENT out of their race meetings... wink.gif And people come from all over Australia because of it. So maybe it IS the done Aussie thing for some QLDers eh? (indeed they take great pride in showing up the southern states, which seems pretty typical behaviour to me, shades of State of Origin... smile.gif )

So if there was a bit more social stuff included in the gethering you would be likely to attract more interstaters and transform it into a true AUSTRALIAN gathering, as the name suggests.

So why not aspire to make a little more out of a gathering than just riding your bikes and having a beer? It doesn't need to be Rockford, but possibly it should be more than it is going to be.... wink.gif
