You can ship via USPS global airmail to Australia - should cost around $US75 for a frame and fork.

Keep the "girth" of the box less than 108 inches , have a look at the USPS web site for the international shipping guidelines & be thankful that you aren't in Canada trying to ship a frame & forks directly to Australia.
Canadian post is insanely expensive.
Alternatly put them onto a ship if you want to save postage & your friend can wait 2 months or so to get them.

USPS Airmail Parcel post is best combination of speed and cost. Cheaper than Global express and only a day or two longer.

Check Item number: 270179282799
What would be a good reply to this guy?
maybe 'Dont use scrunched up dollar bills for packing, use bubble wrap instead'.

The truth would be a good start:
Approx. US $100 via USPS Express Mail tracked all the way to delivery with guaranteed delivery date in about 4-6 business days. $75 with no tracking and a little longer.

create your own truth, go to usps.com, create a shipping label, enter the 2 addresses and the weight of the item (keep the size of the box in mind so you don't get hosed for oversized shipping) and calculate the cost.
Then you know exactly. close your screen and you are done, the label doesn't have to be purchased just because you processed an inquiry.

What Martin said is correct. I've only had one ccase of slow customs, but never lost a shipment (inc F/F) to Australia.

approx 18 months ago, I got a GT 26 frameset shipped from PA to New Zealand, USPS Airmail.
Total shipping was $45. And, it was well packed, and arrived in about 12 days.
That is the truth... Man, I wish the shipping was as cheap as that now

Just for a little additional info...I had a complete bike (20") shipped out front the states last week via USPS global express with tracking. It took 6 days. The bike was broken down into 2 cartons. 1 with all parts, the other with the frame, forks, and wheels. It was $170 in total...The other good part about sending the items in multiple cartons is that you can keep the costs below the all important $1000aud limit, so you don't get slowed up and stitched up by customs...

Just be careful with split shipments. If they turn up at the same time, from the same sender to the same address customs will add them together and hit you. It hurts, trust me.

Oh crap, I didn't realise that! I could be in for a bill and a wait then!

Just be sure to send each box on different days, maybe 2-3 days apart. This is what I have done in the past. Just let the buyer know the deal.

A mate has imported 2 cruiser f/f from the states, 75ish USA bucks each in well padded boxes. Too easy!

Are the USPS postage prices being affected by a fuel surcharge at the moment? The following is two replies from a seller where I was expecting post to be $20-$25. I get the feeling many just cant be bothered posting out of the USA.
...This is about the BMX jersey and pants set. Sorry I didn't get back to you yesterday but the shipping cost will be $53 due to the gas prices. Sorry that it's so much but thats what the post office told me. If something changes with that price at the post office, I will also include the extra money in the package.
AND
...I am not chasing up the shipping price. This is what the post office told me because the fuel surcharge is now 25% for air travel and for the size and weight of the box. Sorry again and I am an honest seller.
