if a rider of madill's calibre can injure himself to that extent there's gonna be one hell of a casualty list over the next few days.

check ultra again, it's been updated..."Luke has 3 broken vertebrae, a broken nose and a broken hand."

how do you break your nose in a full face helmet? - unless his visor snapped and got pushed in or part of his bike hit him? (ouch)
Jarvi
May 3 2006, 09:18 PM
Ouch. Now I have something in common with him. Broke my nose falling off a bike once.
It could have been something like handlebars hitting his nose. I have some footage of Denis McCoy with a Bell fullface helmet staggering away from a halfpipe fall with blood coming from the corner of his eye. Just one of those unlikely moments when his head hit the end of his bars.

triple ouch! I've seen that pic of Dennis McCoy. Not a pretty sight.
I broke my nose at school , but thats another story.

All I've heard is NSW, not necessarily Sydney. so it could be central coast.... Tamworth or maybe even Bathurst!

heads up, i just got told to tune into ABC news and SBS sport for Adelaide BMX coverage tonight... might mean flicking between the two.

Thanks Mark. Saw the spot on SBS about 12 minutes in. Not sure than they had to mention Ben Price returning from breaking his back racing. Might put a few parents off the sport.

Kamakazi is one to watch in the future. That guys got a big future. I really hope Luke is doing alright. He's another great rider. Right up with the worlds best.

In Japanese Kamakaze roughly translates as "divine wind".... sort of like what happens after a big night on the curry and beer

It sounds like the physical cost of racing has increased dramatically since racing in the 1980's , scuffed up hands elbows knees , a few stiches & the occasional broken collar bone were standard issue bitd.
The extent of Luke Madill's injuries seem consistant with those that a US pro jump circut rider , MX or BMX who earns a stack of money for their efforts & training.
MX & BMX in the US seems split between those who "race" & those who "jump" , to me it looks like the promoter &/or track designer of the Australian titles track has decided to incorporate some big dirt jumps into a race track in order to get some cheap action & Luke has paid a very hefty price for chasing a number plate & a few lousy bux on a combination race _&_ jump track.I know nothing else matters at the time a title plate is on the line in a race , but putting jumps into a track that can cause this type of injury is negligent.
All the best to Luke in his recovery from his injuries & hopefully those who are responsible for the pro section will get kneecapped both financially & phisically for their design efforts , a BMX race track should only be able to mess up a fit young bloke for a month or so , not mess up the rest of a his life.

I'm glad they didn't film that SBS story today - the tracks a mud bath after all the rain we've had. Must admit it was a lot of fun sliding around in the mud and puddles today getting filthy while others sat in the clubhouse and whinged they didn't want to get their bikes dirty. Some kid was there on a old cro-mo supermax with tuffs - he said it was his dads. Shows how well made they were - 24 years old and can still take the rough stuff. He let me take it for a spin on the track - heaps of fun
