Thanks y'all !
Oldschoolroy... fake GT stems look exactly like the genuine article. Here's a pic of 3 stems that I own.
The one on the left is the real deal, the other two are copys.
Here's how to tell: The genuine GT stems were manufactured by SR (sakae ringyo japan) who are the same company resposible for GT power series 3pc cranks. The stem shaft is chromoly in a black steel finish.
The fakes will have a chrome plated shaft with no SR logo and possibly a rotor cable hole with adjuster. The funny thing is, it was GT who sold some of the fakes during the 90's because the stems were still in high demand amongst serious riders. I guess GT didn't want to pay SR to make the later versions.
The average price for a genuine GT block stem is US$50 , I know because I've been outbid on every one of 'em. I still see people paying full price for the fakes which makes me cringe. A fake should only be worth half that as they are technically midschool.

Jan 5 2006, 05:42 PM
velocidad.... You what???? I wish I could find them at the local pawn shop! Although I'm pretty sure that I cant afford to do any more of them but please send pics of them if you can or send the serial numbers.
Jan 5 2006, 06:14 PM
All I find is crap. got another goose from the tip shop today for $5. It's only an expert but I couldnt leave it there! I am a sucker for mongoose crap!
Roberto send me a PM about some powder job costs please.
I have an 87 FST to do as well as some other frames. Did you get stickers (for your Haros) from Chip in the US?
Jan 5 2006, 07:49 PM
Just checking to see what the going rate is for lacing wheels. Local shop quoted $45 build fee plus $1 a spoke for stainless steel double butted. How does that compare?
Anyone here in Melbourne competent to do it and want some work? I don't have the spokes or nipples so I could supply or you can and I will pay. Just one set at the moment of Suzue low flange sealed and Araya 7x rims.

Hi James, that sounds about right for a wheel build. Anything from around $40 - $60 is average for a bike shop wheel build and $1 a spoke is the going rate. I've laced wheels myself in the past but no way would i do it again - it's just too time consuming
Jan 5 2006, 10:02 PM
James/Ian - sounds a bit on the high side to me, that works out at ~$170 for a pair of wheels... I would be wanting swiss DT spokes for that price. Lacing is easy imho, especially if your lacing new rims, its just the trueing up of old rims that can be a real b!tch.... James > ring Steve Taylor at TotalBMX in Lilydale, he's a good wheelbuilder with a vaste qty of spokes!
Jan 5 2006, 10:06 PM
Roberto.... maybe that should have read "maybe I should HAVE grabbed 'em".... they are long gone now - LOL.
But thanks for the lessons about the breed mate, I was too busy playing with old holden's during that era.
Jan 5 2006, 10:14 PM
Jan 5 2006, 10:51 PM
Mark, actually I think he might have said something about Swiss. Not up with all the spoke technology but yeah after I thought about the money I paid for the rims and hubs (well they were reasonable) plus $170 they are starting to look expensive. I'm beginning to think based on the money I'm spending that these bikes should not be riders. I'm sure I'll get over that once they are put together and I'll have to take them for regular runs.
Jan 5 2006, 11:19 PM
that's it I'm taking all my seats off.....http://www.theage.com.au/news/mens-health/...2703293900.html
The link between bicycle saddles and impotence first received public attention in 1997 when a Boston urologist, Dr Irwin Goldstein, who had studied the problem, asserted that "there are only two kinds of male cyclists - those who are impotent and those who will be impotent".
Jan 5 2006, 11:30 PM
Hey if you don't sit down you should be cool then.
So don't down LOL
Jan 5 2006, 11:31 PM
the next time I call a road biker a soft c**k I'll probably be right.... ha ha hah
Jan 5 2006, 11:34 PM
Impotence is only a problem if you are presented with an opportunity and can' take advantage of it, so I'll keep riding for the time being. Oops too much information, where is the delete key again...
Perhaps those freestyle guys with the seat only about an inch out of the seat tube are doing it a reason.
Jan 6 2006, 01:43 AM
hahaha I'll tell my little fella about that. Maybe he'll stand up when he races! I have 3 kids and I've been riding bikes for over 35 years. You do the math.
On another note, I worked out today I can post on here from my phone! Theres no stopping me now!
Vortex looks very cool Mark.
Jan 6 2006, 02:37 AM
Post from your phone? I'd like to know how you do that. Is it time consuming?
Jan 6 2006, 02:42 AM
Once you log in it's pretty easy. My coverage kept dropping out so it was a pain. Thats how I read your PM today. I have this aussie forum bookmarked so it's easy now.
Jan 6 2006, 03:41 AM
Coasta.. Yeah..really but won't it take a long time to upload a page? I've tried with my phone as well..

Jan 6 2006, 04:15 AM
I always ask if they'll ship overseas - most of them will for small stuff like that. I won a quadangle last week and the guy said he'd ship it to me - haven't heard from him since and he's not returning e-mails. Good thing I haven't paid anything - starting to look like a rip-off. This is the second time I've won a big item and the seller has piked out. Real annoying, they should say "No International Bidders" and then I don't bid. In the meantime I've missed out on another one locally. OK, there's my whinge for the day
Jan 6 2006, 04:33 AM
