QUOTE (COASTY @ Apr 7 2011, 10:07 PM)

I took this pic in 2005 when I was still living on the Goldy!

I had one of those things too..
Black frame with yellow mudguards
The rims and spokes looked like motorbike wheels!

Yep, but which shade of black?! Lol. CD might know!
Page 1982. Another very fine year in Bmx. Finally got my own Diamond Back frame in '82. Still have it. The only one I am sure I will never ever sell.

Righto guys , have got a question or 3 ...
can you guys send me some links for bike parts ?
I am going to run Profile cranks , graphite tuffs , Hutch pedals , suede seat , SE bars .... on this PK that I am going to put together .
Have you got any suggestions ? does that sound OK ? I havent had anything to do with pushies for more than 25 yrs , so I am out of touch a fair bit , would you reccomend anything different ?
My plan is to make this ride like a well oiled machine while I try & work out where to go from here , build an old school original , buy one complete etc etc .
I have been offered an original Turbo which I hope to be able to purchase , can you get original parts for something that old ?
Biggest question is can anyone redo that smokey colour on the frame & forks ?
Thanks in advance

Mate, I we leave the new school links to the other lads...I'm still knocking around on my 25 year old Hutch

In regards to the Turbo, think long and hard about re-finishing...think about keeping it survivor, whilst I've re-finished a number old bikes when I started collecting, I think in the long run the original finish will hold more appeal to you, even if it is well worn (which turbo's always are, mine included)...if you do decide to go the re-finishing option there is only one guy that will do the smoked finish justice...Roberto from Lewis and Sons Powder Coating...he has spent about 3 years perfecting the finish...it means new chrome and then a transparent powder will be applied...it's not cheap, but it is the only option if you want do it right...I can hook you up with his number if you are interested...
As far as getting parts...put it this way I looked for 4 years to find some OG tires...granted they are hardest part and they are horrendously expensive .... if you want a heart attack go here
Martin Bike Price Tracker for Old School Parts It is really a case of being patient and the parts will eventually pop up...but be warned you could be looking at considerable cash for certain parts...

Good info Stu.. except showing him Martin's website Lol
Is this a old PK or a retro one your modifying?
If it's a retro you can use all the newly made stuff on it, but if it's a old one then ebay is your friend... or enemy i should say.
Profile still makes retro box cranks, Hutch makes pedals and Skyway makes new Tuffs so your covered for everything

Thanks Stu , will keep that in mind .
Its a new 1 , so those parts I mentioned I have seen for sale , so that setup should be Ok .

even better news

Lock it in now!!!

Sounds like you are doing a very similar thing to me with your PK - except I have started with a complete and am swapping parts out.
My goal is to replace the parts I don't want with modern retro or new school equivelants of the old school brands.
So am running or about to run: ESP stem, Shimano DXR brakes, DX pedals, DXR cranks, Tioga nylon saddle, Bullseye hubs etc etc. It's a lot of fun keeping an old school look with new school performance. Very, very smooth to ride too.
Check out Chain Reaction Cycles in the UK - offer free shipping on amounts over about $400 and are the cheapest source for a lot of parts. You can mail order from Profile (profileracing.com) but to be honest their shipping prices are wacked.

Yeah I'm still think of a way around those bloody cotter pins...
Glenn, you could always use the cotterless steel cranks. Same BB as alloy arms. Not sure what lengths they came in though.
I remember black with red and black with yellow Repco monoshocks. Were they the only two variations?
Just in case anyone is interested, I'll be in Spain (or maybe France, or Switzerland, or Belgium etc) on 21 August.

This was a huge meet at Metro West in Liverpool Sydney , not exactly sure of the year , 83 or 84 .
Had a fairly big Pro Purse ( well it was for back then ) , we even had a few yanks come out .
Was basically a 3 day meet , practice Friday , race motos Saturday & Sunday morning , Quarters & Semi's during the day & the Main was under lights Sunday night .
This is still 1 race that I can remember vividly , we had 70 odd in our class which I think was 16yr boys .
I made the main & got a great start but some dufuss passed me going into the first turn , I had previously been able to pass this bloke going into turn 2 so I tried it again only to have the front end wash out .... I was pretty gutted & right where I landed was the old man on the other side of the fence screaming at me .....
Certainly was 1 of the more memorable experiences I had while I was racing BMX , Oh & the younger brother won his class which made it a fairly painful 4 hour drive home with them .

I like the color of that Gorilla Martin. Looks great. Is it NOS? And the Nomura is stripped down?
www.martin-bike.com
Apr 10 2011, 05:54 AM
Hey Glenn, no the Gorilla isn't NOS - well, I don't think it is. Don't know the history of it unfortunately.
Everything in my bike room is stripped down except the next bikes I will be photographing. Some of you know that my parents will be moving to a nursing home some time this year. I need to combine my bike room in Sydney with the one in Hong Kong as they will be selling their house. After over 10 years of collecting, I have way too much stuff so need to lighten the load as I'm not keen on paying for storage to house everything. So, I will be back in Sydney from 14 May and will be selling a whole bunch of stuff while there.
If any of you are interested, drop me an email on martin@martin-bike.com and I'll be in contact during that week with a list of things I'll be letting go.

Taking it to a bloke that will give it a bit of a polish (Norms been in my ear...lol, thanks bud!) so fingers crossed it will come out ok, to be honest its in bloody good nic, just will be interested to see what this bloke can do with it..

Its in pretty good nic, the og chrome is to nice to strip, even better than i first thought, its been sitting in storage for ages, just took a few pics dust and all......
Its quite weird as mine has a straight brake bridge, I have discussed this with Voris and he said it is quite rare and that not to many where made with this brake bridge, i suppose it was whatever the welder grabbed.......Its had very little work, the dropouts are near perfect too so it all should come up quite well, have Matts old decals which will go on after a polish.........

Thanks again for that email Kurt, I really appreciate it bud.
