Well apparently the cone goes inside a Schwinn headset which was the problem.
I'll let Linn Kastan tell the story.
QUOTE
I machined an angle on that collar that fit the angle that was on the fixed cone of the Schwinn headsets
of the day. But the problem was that when kids saw that angle on there, they didn’t think they needed the race,
so they started running the bearings directly on the fork, and the forks were constantly come loose and we kept
getting calls from people saying they cant keep their forks tight, and we had a couple of them send them back
and when they sent them back, of course, we saw that the hardened balls were just beating their way into that
angle, that was machined on that collar, and the fork was constantly getting loose and they finally they’d just
run out of threads. Or sometimes it would actually slip over it, it would get beat up so badly. So we didn’t do
that very long. We changed that pretty quickly. That was the first actual modification. And the second one was
the nipping of the cutting off the fork legs so they didn’t go by the dropout.

How cool is this! You might remember a week or so ago I was looking for a locking collar for a Sugino sealed bearing BB?
Any way, Blackout Steve (Steve Knight) from OS-DB and Oz offered to have some machined up. The result is below. If you are looking for one, $10 each plus $2 postage from Steve. Thread down below.
Bargain.
That is my original collar on the far right - great workmanship on the new ones!

Beautiful lineup B! Wish my attic looked like that!
Very cool stickers Glenn. I believe the gold and orange head tube ones are early - so the silver and black would be right for your cool 3rd gen.
Mick have only two words for you.
You Suck! Ok, two more: Stunning mate.
I'll take some pics of the new bench tomorrow in the daylight - legs are like 8" x 3" hardwood. 6" x 2" for the other boards! Been laying around the yard for years and a bit of a plane and they are really great. We have a Federation place and it had a couple of 50's and 60's modifications that we demolished when restoring her. This wood is like iron - I burnt out about 3 x 10mm drill bits getting through it all to bolt her together! I wanted her to look like she had been a bench for 100 years or so so it is nice and industrial

edit: Sorry Mick. I saw the stunning shiny G-Boy and just assumed it belonged to Scrooge McChristian. Now you suck too. 70's Uber-exotica!!!!
