Hey Reece - it's an '81.
It's either a Senior Pro or a Large (the immediate predecessor to the SP). They changed over mid-'81.
It's hard to see from the pics - you really need a nice, level, side on pic of the frame to tell the difference. In a Senior Pro the seat tube and steering head are basically parallel (within 1 degree of each other).
The sort-of-side-on pic in the listing might be misleading, but it looks to me like the seat tube is quite a bit more "laid back" than the steerer tube - if so, it's a Large.
Nice frame, but it's not a matched pair - they are late '81 Senior Pro forks - and they are wrecked. If it turns out it is a Large, it should have dual dropout DB forks too.
Hey James - thanks mate - I thought it'd be '84 or '85. I need a set of red tuff pads for my '82 Roberto's build, and can't find the old ones in red : (
Have a set of the freestyle ones here somewhere though so they might have to do if I can't source the right ones... I was just hoping they might have come out a little earlier...
Kurt.

however, I did nearly spit red wine through my nose when I saw my tuffs sell.
http://cgi.ebay.com.au/OLD-SCHOOL-SKYWAY-T...A1%7C240%3A1318it's wierd, higher end stuff seems to be cheaper than the every day stuff I sold a set of suzie hubs for more than I bought a set of 1st gen phils!??? I don't get it, is it me or does every one think that?

A theory, and I stress it is just a theory, is that people will spend the dollars on stuff they know about. Every knows about tuffs, suzue hubs, araya rims etc. Phils, ESP stems and similar will attract big dollars if the right person is looking at the time you are selling. People are always after tuffs and stuff.

Perception of value is certainly a strange thing
Here's an example

Picked them up from a guy who's into Fixies - he wasn't that interested in old Japanese rubbish, wanted Campagnolo and European parts
$175 posted

Some people might pay $25 for the sticker
(at least the date code matches the frame they will be going on!)

Have nearly finished the resto of my Z rims.
Sanded with OOOO steel wool, dishwashed twice, a soak in Dylon No 9 Pagoda red and then WD40.
Just need some ACS stickers and they'll be built up.
Sumo178
Apr 3 2009, 03:21 AM
leave them without the ACS on the sides. The ACS branded ones came out in late 83. this way you can ride on them as well and not scuff the logos.
Kurt.

yeah - just thinking of the red chrome and blue sticker on the top of the rim. They are '81 Marlyn's so never had the sidewall logo.

So Kurt you did the whole boil them in the dye thing - for how long?
they look great
I have a pair just waiting for this treatment
Kurt.
Apr 3 2009, 03:45 AM
hey Ben,
Boiled a heap of water, poured it all into a large plastic tub and left them soaking in it for two hours outside. No simmering on heat.
2 little tins of Dylon no.9 "Pagoda Red" and a couple of cups of salt.
Yours red too?
Brisben
Apr 3 2009, 03:53 AM
Yeah Kurt mate - they're red but I want them a little deeper in colour
They don't need too much sanding as the finish is still nice but the colour is a little faded
If you were going to put them on a rider, how would the wd-40 affect the braking ability?
Kurt.
Apr 3 2009, 04:07 AM
The WD40 is pretty much standard for restoring tuffs and seems to work OK. They will dry out.
Finish was good. I only sanded with OOOO steel wool to remove the brake marks and some of the light oxidising before dying.
