Hey Fellas - some great builds going on.

I've been busy with old car stuff lately and not much time for BMX for a little while!!! Might even part with a few parts soon: Motomag frame, JMC 3.1 frame, Brute stem etc.

Nice score Reece - I thought it was a Madison Taipan (welded by Koizumi) when I first looked at it - but the box section behind the BB is different. Don't know anything about Webcos.

I've had Customs charges before on motorcycle parts - but only when shipping by Fedex - Customs are actually collocated with Fedex at Sydney. I won't use them any more.

The Customs limit has changed in the last couple of years - used to be $500, is $1000 now. There's a flat inspection fee - like $50 I think - plus an amount per hundred in item value.

Some excerpts from the Customs website:

http://www.customs.gov.au/site/page.cfm?u=5549

All goods (except for tobacco products and alcoholic beverages) may be imported duty and tax free if their value is $1,000 or less.

Note: However, where there are multiple packages to the same addressee in Australia from a single consignor overseas that arrive at about the same time, then the value of all packages will be combined for duty and tax assessment purposes.

Imported goods with a value of more than A$1000

* Irrespective of how your imported goods arrive in Australia, you will be required to lodge a formal Customs import declaration if their value is above $1,000, and to pay the calculated duty and taxes.
* duty, where applicable, is based on the classification of the goods within the Customs Tariff Act 1985. Goods and Services Tax (GST) is also payable on most goods at a rate of 10%.

Example 1: Import of multiple low value packages of goods (for example, six packages each valued at $200)
AUD$
Customs value (6 x $200) (Cval) 1200.00
Customs duty (Duty) @ 5% of Cval 60.00 (Payable)
International transport and insurance or postage (T&I) 150.00
Value of the Taxable Importation (VoTI) (Cval+Duty+T&I) 1410.00
Goods and Services Tax (GST) @ 10 per cent of the VoTI 141.00 (Payable)
Total payable Duty + GST 201.00

Hey fellas, sorry to butt in but do you guys all know of an ozzie racer from bitd called Jay Downey???
Kurt.
I have to say (touch wood) that my experiences on e:bay have been fantastic.

In about 150 purchases & sales, I've only been ripped off by one seller - and that was "icreatedmyusername", previously known as "cockfarmer". He's apparently related to a member on here.

where abouts were they Scott? I think i remember a chick with that last name though.

Sunshine coast based Glenno.....Thats his sister. I was talking today to Jay. He has some massive stories to tell and I hope to catch him at his house next weekend. Bob Haro stayed with him bitd and his dad apparently bought a mx II from Stu himself for his sis. Oh, ......he still has it and a heap of other stuff. I'm hoping to get a heap of pics and the full story. Is there any chance he may have won or competed in the world titles bitd? I beleive thats the case....
Gnarley
His sister is Melita Downey. I think I spelt that right.

now there's some names I haven't heard in a while.
Bradster
Hey Guys - thanks to all the replies regarding import taxes etc - awesome stuff!!!

Yeah Reece, I've picked up a one owner Hutch Pro-Racer f/f, the guy recieved it new in 1984, raced it 85/86, then lost interest and went MTBing!! It's been sitting all this time!
Will get camera happy when it arrives!!

Yep, I think that is her. She was a very talented racer also I beleive. They are both still around town.

Jay mentioned he still has his gt race bike. One of only four which were actually manufactured in oz......I can wait to check out all his gear......it was a really interesting conversation this arvo...
caferacer
Hey Serva i know Jay Downey and his sister. He rode for the Australian G.T team and made the main at the 83 world titles in Holand when he was about 13 years old.
I think he droped out of the race scene around late 84 or 85 if i remeber right.
serva
Yeah, I hope to chat with him and write down! some more info soon. He seems a super nice guy. He said that he stopped riding for gt about the time they changed hands??? and he started riding for SE. He also said that he kept breaking their frames and it was getting very competative and killed it some what for him.
caferacer
I pretty sure he got 5th at those world titles, i spoke to his sister around 94 when she was living at bondi in sydney, but have not seen Jay since 84.
serva
Thats cool! Don't know if you want to, but I'll gladly put you guys in touch? or let him know I have been chatting with you? He seemed very surprised people are restoring their old bikes and stuff, but has looked at some web sites like this before.

He is recovering from a work accident and riding a bmx around a track does'nt seem a viable option for him just now.

His sis is moving to the coast soon. She is just North of Brisbane,,,
caferacer
Yep tell him i said hi, he'll remeber me. Yea who would of thought that there would be so much interest in all this ? Not me !
COASTY
Ah yes Melita, I do remember that name now.
Yeah who'd a thought??
Sounds like a good person to know and speak with.

I remember getting one of those GT's that Melita, Mike and Wayne are on in the pic. Had it about 3 months and was actually racing against Baker in a Semi (I think) at Ashmore and by the time the race was over the top tube and down tube had folded so far back the front tire was almost touching the frame. Funny thing was the GT rep ( I forget the blokes name) who was at the race - actually at the finish line cheering on Baker told me that I must have dropped it from a helicopter to do that to the frame - "Mate - I was just ridin' along". Actually I did overshoot one of the small doubles and land slightly nose first - did not crash though. The new headangle of 90+ degrees made the handling pretty bad. GT finally replaced it with a used factory team fame which cracked shortly thereafter...

The channel 31 stuff started on the 17th I think. Had some Vic Titles footage I think. I'm not technically advanced enough to tune my TV to get it...

I have a similar story with a GT. Was at the Devonport track and my local shop had one of the shop co-sponsor deals with a few GT riders. We used to bag the crap out of poor Barry (shop owner) probably because none of us were on the team. Can't remember who was riding but there was a big cracking sound in one race and I think the bike went straight from the finish line to the back of Barry's brown HG Holden before anyone had a chance to check it out.

Aussie guys, need some advice - have got a F/F on it's way from the states, pretty sure I read somewhere there can be a tax of sorts for imported items over $500/$1000???

Any way around it, what are you guys doing?

Cheers

Bradster , i used to import wakeboard gear and this is an absolute fact : anything over $249.99AU gets import tax and GST added by the customs , it seems to me with recent experience that if its marked "secondhand bike/bmx parts" it gets through , even if its under $1000. i have never had a part more than $1000 so i dont know . BUT if you import goods (wakegear) over a grand you have to fill in import forms and jump through hoops , it will cost you $200+ .

so ask the seller to mark it as it is ...."secondhand bike parts" and get the full price marked for insurance purposes , BUT i dunno how you would go with a small package of aeropspeeds laugh.gif

The rules have changed. Here's the link to the Australian Customs website:

Australian Customs - Importing by Post

" . . . all goods (except for tobacco and alcoholic beverages) may be imported duty and tax free if the value of the goods is A$1000 or less."

Anything marked as a gift or goods for personal use - the receiver is deemed to be the importer of those goods. Check the FAQ for clarrification.

Martin , i just bought a new Tag Heuer F1 Chrono from the USA , the new model is not available in OZ here yet .... so i got it from the USA for $620us , i got charged $92 for customs and gst . that was 3 weeks ago , the OZ to USA exch rate was 90c to the ozzy dollar which means $700ish , nowhere near the 1k mark .
www.martin-bike.com
I think Customs have the discretion to hit you:

"Generally, all goods imported into Australia are subject to Customs duty and GST and are assessed for community protection risks."

May be a bit of luck or that some things may attract more attention than others.

I import rather larger quantities of merchandisiing for my business (new products) and anything with a a value under a $1000 (AUD) sails right through customs, but if it is even a dollar over, it gets tagged and I have to fill out the the customs declarations and they get hit with duty...

Interesting co-incidence re the Tag watch, I actually just came back from Switerland and I was hoping to pick up a Tag Heuer Link Chrono there (thinking they might be cheaper, cause they make them there) well they were still too much. Then flying back through Singapore I picked one up at the airport $700 less, cause they were having a 20% off sale!

Needless to say no duties, I was wearing it!

Hey Coasty, nice pic of the Aussie GT team.

Michael Baker is a customer of mine, I'd known him for a while and never knew his connection to BMX until he looked down at my checkerd Vans low tops and said "I used to have a pair BITD?"

I'll invite him to the next BMX BBQ comming up in May.
Bradster
From what you guys are saying I think I'll get through without a charge from customs, the USPS form simply has 'bicycle parts' with a total value of $475 being declared.

Another note: the USPS 'track & confirm' web page states my item has left Chicago at 9.17pm on Jan 25.....will I see it this week??? Fingers crossed!!

If it left LA you may have seen it this week. You might be lucky but my guess is early the following week.

I had something stuck in Chicago for a couple of weeks. When the seller made enquiries, it was found that the tag had been ripped from the package accidently and nobody knew where it was supposed to go! This was in there:

Moral of the story - monitor the tracking.

Will also be offloading the following frame and fork sets if anyone is interested: 82/83 GTP Pro (Chrome) and 84ish Profile Champ (Black). If anyone is interested let me know, make an offer or wait for ebay.

LOL If I had a bobcat I could build a great track anywhere! We need one closer to me. The nearest track is 40 k's away. Although I have found another council park 10 mins from me. No racing there but.

just on the customs thing , as said $1 over $999.99 and youre screwed , but it is definately over $249.99 and you have the potential to incur customs , i had it 50% of the time , when it got through it was a bonus . maybe differnet on secondhand bmx bits , i never got customs on ANY bmx frames .

But i ship in a new set of bindings for wakeboarding at $300 and get run $70 .
Kurt.
Hey Fellas,

Not BMX related, but thought you might be interested.

I'm the President of the Horsehead Water Ski Club. This Saturday we are attempting to break the world record for the most water skiers behind a single boat. The current record is 100 and has stood for about 25 years - we are going with 120 skiers.

The attempt will happen at 7:00 AM this Saturday at Strahan on Tassie's west coast - you might hear about this in the media.

120 Skiers, a massive new 3000hp river cruise boat, a 200 ft long boom, support boats and even a helicopter - should be a real buzz!!! Glenn Ridge will be down filming a doco on it. I'll post some pics if we break the record!!

Cheers Kurt

Anyone out there got an old left side sealed bearing KKT Lightning (pedal or just spindle???)

Better still - two of them - one for me and one for Mick!!!
