Yeah, all good - still alive. LOL. This helped the recovery process . . .
(was going to save revealing this but looks like I won't make it home until December now)
1983 Profile Cruiser Project

Includes:
- Profile horse shoe pedals
- 1st gen Profile cranks in original chrome
- NOS never mounted Profile Lock Jaw stem
- Profile Cruiser bars
- Profile 24" Cruiser in original chrome
- high flange Profile Gyrolite hubs
- Profile pads
- Pro Class 24" rims
I think I'll be using chrome pads on the Profile and this plate:

And . . . early Nomura project.

Managed to pry the very bike in this photo from it's owner including:
- Nomura frame
- Nomura chrome pads (complete set of 3)
- original Bottema M3 forks
- JMC DY bars
- Pro Class rims
- Brakes & Terry Cable
- NOS Michellin tires (from the Pro Star lightest bike build)
Going to build and shoot 2 versions of the Nomura. One late version in 84 spec. However, Nomura stopped making frames in 82 so going to do another version in 81/82 spec. That frame is so out of control - it would be a shame to not spread the love over 2 builds.
I cannot wait to build these bikes!!!

Glad to be back at work so I can finally think about things other than bikes!

That's great news Martin....but geezus you are killing me with those bikes!!!
Dam that Profile cruiser will be ridiculous (in a very good way)...and the others are also totally incredible too.
Now can you get off ebay so I can win something!

24 hours non-stop, hard core trawling for 4 weeks locked in a room results in the ridiculous and the extreme. Managed to finish other builds in the wings you haven't seen yet. I can now see light at the end of the tunnel.
I will not be accumulating any more frame sets to build but will be focussing on completing what I have and the photography. Well, maybe a JMC, Patterson or GT cruiser could tempt me but I will not be actively looking anymore.
The Nomura was completely unplanned but had to take the opportunity when it presented itself. I remember seeing that bike for the first time just a couple of weeks earlier and thinking to myself (in the words of Derek Zoolander), "that bike is ridiculously good looking"
That Nomura frame just kills me.
Kurt.

Martin, that Profile 24" is going to be one of the nicest bikes you have built.

Yeah Andy, I'm really excited about that one. Somehow ended up with 2 sets of Profile horse shoe pedals in the space of a week after searching for years.
This NOS set will go on my black 20" Profile that needs alot of tweaking since this mock up shot

mmm....Profile Pedals, although I won't ever put them on my Profile (as it is set up as it was bitd)....I have got to have some! Might mean I have to build another Profile.
Either that or some expensive paper weights! Actually probably not even great paper weights, because they are soooo light!

Yeah, build another one!
I remember seeing black Profiles BITD with clear or black backed decals - not the chrome ones.
Can anybody confirm this???

Hey Marty/Ozzy-cheers for the info regarding 24" wheels!
Marty-don't remember 'Profile' bikes BITD, but your project looks to be a real classy effort-I look forward to the end result!! Glad your on the mend also!!

Hey Martin, I think they (black Profile's) came with either chrome or black backed decals at different times...
I'm pretty sure I've got a picture of Darren May on his with the black stickers, but I'm also sure there was a test in a mag with chrome decals....I'll have to go and have a search through the old mag's...
I've got a set of clear ones from Chris Baron, which are perfect, however are slightly transparent and makes them lot slightly "washed out" on a black frame, but perfect on white...I also had a set of black repro's, which I wasn't happy with the print quality...

Aug 31 2007, 03:22 AM
No worries Brad and thanks!
Stu, do you remember what year the black back and chrome backs were used?
Do you have a picture of Chris Baron's decals on a black frame?

Awesome twins Ozzy, looks good....
Absolutely terrible scan of Darren May on his black Profile, I think this was in BMX Pancake (which I don't have)...I would take a stab at this being 83-84...but it is just a guess...

Here is my clear set from CB, I applied an extra one and it looked pretty ordinary. (unfortunately I don't have any photo's)...I think the clear would look great on a white or yellow frame...

Aug 31 2007, 06:02 AM
Cool, thanks Stu.
I was thinking of doing a couple of versions of the black Profile also - one with Profile pads and an Aussie version with Invada pads and plate - same parts just different shots.
Nice rides Ozzy!

been doin RPM classes at my gym and hitting the track 3-4 times a week to get ready ....to cut a long story short, there is an idiot that works with me and he rides cruiser at the cove . i dont say idiot lightly either , I THINK (not others) hes a nice guy but hes not the sharpest tool in the box and he shouts off a bit at the mouth . put it like this , id be better to beat him from when i start racing than to overtake at a later date
i know you's understand

Hey Stu and Ti Man , i mean Martin that pic of Darren May is from 82 and i think the decals on that bike had clear back grounds. I use to ride with him a fair bit around this time and im pretty sure they where clear.

Martinbike:
without sounding harsh, i wanted to ask if the bottema forks on your Nomura are bent backward a tad?
Maybe it's the lighting or the camera angle?, but it does seems a tad sharper in angle than the headtube
Just thought it may be something that needs attention to make the Nomura a killer show build.
Well done scoring the Nomura anyhoo....
www.martin-bike.com
Aug 31 2007, 07:23 AM
Thanks Marty. The Nomura is leaving on a jet plane (tracked) within the next few hours. Had to hold off the shipment until all the Profile stuff arrived in 3 seperate shipments. I'm paranoid about customs after being stung once.
Anyway, in the interests of perfection and historical accuracy, I will check out the forks when I finally get to see it in real life. Until then it's going to be nail biting and sleepless nights for sure.
Not harsh at all and always welcome constructive suggestions . . .

That's a finite list I'm kind of relieved to say. I've been in this game for over 5 years and even if I stopped right now, it would take me another 5-10 years to complete what I am trying to do the way I'm doing it.
Now I need to learn a whole new hobby - photography. That's a whole different ball game.

when you look at tim cook photos of all his survivors , without a doubt the photography make 1000% difference to the way the bike looks .
the person who took the photos for his bikes could make a $80 K-Mart sell for $500 (with the $80 price tag attached) . amazing !

Tim's bikes were photographed by Mux. I've attempted to achieve that level of quality (and hopefully better some day). It's much harder than it seems. Had a studio, professional photographer, his camera etc, but a non-bike guy just doesn't get it sometimes so I'm doing it all myself next time.
Is anybody here familiar with "Pro Fit" stems?
Need history, timelines, versions, and pics if possible.
This is what I have so far:
PRO-FIT was the company started by Donny Atherton (factory rider for Champion, PRO-FIT, Redline, and Vector). It featured a unique "full"
top plate design. The stem was standard equipment for Greg Hill, Eric Rupe, Mike Poulson, Richie Anderson, and Tommy Brackens to name a few.

I totally agree about the photography, it is actually quite difficult to photograph a bike, hard not to get shadows without the correct lighting....Ajaybmx that is a totally sweet shot!
www.martin-bike.com
Aug 31 2007, 05:50 PM
Wow, that's an awesome shot Ajay - especially since the sun is on the opposite side to the bike. I'm still a novice and would never have thought to shoot it that way.
I also love the effect of depth of field - focussed foreground and unfocussed background - especially on close up bike shots. e.g. focussed shot of a stem but seeing the wheel in the background unfocussed. Looks hot and accentuates the focussed picture in the foreground.
I hope this is the beginning of the end to my photography woes.
Box has been cleared but email easier.

The crank had a hairline crack by the looks of it and me riding full pelt up a hill was more than it could bear! we rode about 20 mins back to my car and picked up the bike and the distressed owner ( it wasnt my bike - we had swapped less than a minute before!)
