Do you just want Quickies Reece? I have a few of my old bikes. A mate of mine bitd had a Quicksilver done up as a freestyle ride. This was in 81 before the freestyle bug bit. Classic bike but no pics unfortunately.

Nah just close up pics of old school rides, the few pics I have, have all been posted a thousand times before. I really wish I had some pics of my bikes and some of my mates bikes.

All of mine have been posted before but next time I'm back home I'll see if David (the owner of the Quicksilver) has any I can scan. Might be down that way next month.
Whilst looking through what I do have, Kurt, do you think the guy in second place is Matt Brammell(sp)? Looks like a Diamond Back but not sure what he rode before the Quicksilver.

I want one of those as well!
I'd love to build a replica of my Team bike, pre Helium frames. Lots of good memories....

Hey Jarvi,
I don't think that's Bramall - Around that time he would have been running a black helmet with home made Stu Thomsen style red and white stripes.(I know because I bought it off him and painted it blue.) I don't think Matt ever had a DB - got a funny feeling he ran a Redline before he got his Quickie. I'll have to ask Bakker - he'd know.
I also bought a silver Araya 7C with Suzue hub off Matt BITD (he ran it for a long time). I've still got that wheel - untouched and on the front of my son's MX2 nowadays. I ran the same wheel on all my bikes - great rims.

It's funny actually Kurt because I have no idea what most people rode early on. Guess mainly Redlines, Diamond Backs and Mongooses. My mother told me she ran into Glenn Creeley last week and gave him an update. He laughed and said BMX is always in the blood. How true.
Kurt.
Mar 20 2007, 05:05 AM
Oh yeah. There's something going on. My mum wasn't surprised at all when I got back into it. Have you noticed how many ex-BMXers are petrol heads too? Thrillseekers!
Nice pics fellas. I still have to go back to my parent's place some time and go through the old photos - hoping to find something - anything.
Did you guys see the black Oakley .5s this week on the bay? I put a woefully inadequate bid in early as I used to run these BITD. They went for $182.50 US!!! Aye Caramba!

Minor correction in that old B&W Allstar lineup photo that AJ posted a few pages back , Wayne Mackinosh is wearing Thornleigh Bikeshop colours not Raleigh as AJ hasily questioned himself on. Heh , Thornleigh Bikeshop....Glenn Cox also rode for them there may be a Mark Bradley connection in there somewhere when Eastwood was racing on it's first BMX track.
I better remember the antics of Matt & Luke Johnston when they rode for Thornleigh , 2 fast , competitive brothers from a "bike racing family" ,these guys arrived at the race track more revved up than a pro wrestler on roids , (mongo) Matty truely made his mark during a trophy presentation at Ryde Track number 3 , when he started a brawl with Jason Huckstepp during the trophy presentation...I think they were in the age group below Cafe Racer at the time , 12 year olds (?)
it took ~6 adults to get the situation under control..sorry Thornleigh Bikeshop always triggers some interesting BMX memories from the 1980's....
Bikes I rode bitd
The incredible shrinking Redline MXII

The very short lived Apollo Le Quero (frame) all the other parts on it rocked

& the ever trusty BBR 1 sporting some really cool GT pads on it. Still got the handlebar pad somewhere...

got a few more (unscanned) earlier Blacktown gate start pix here showing race bike builds from bitd...

Result: Reported to ebay.

I couldnt help myself i had to send a message to him also as follows
i have been advised by a friend that you are a bit of a goat fancier and are in possesion of some over excited goats that might prefer the same gender as opposed to the opposite, infact weirdly enough they seem to enjoy the company of frogs and ranagtang (as you spell it) so i was wondering if you would be so kind as to forward me your address as i think i know a cure for these poor creatures.
wonder if he will get back to me?

Hey Coast , a little gossip from the Australia day meet...
Despite noticing that the pinchless flights on the BBR1 were a little loose on the chainwheel side & needed a little extra attention to make them a snug fit.*
Caferacer & AJ then both agreed that a set of 1 piece 175 or 180mm Takagi cranks were much more reliable & easier to maintain than those troublesome pinchless flights I had on my bike......So to keep caferacer "happy" , send him down a set of old chrome Takagi cranks with a bit of copper showing thru under the worn chrome on the chainring side.
I might even throw caferacer a few 45 singles to sweeten the deal & ease his pain , hearing him
recant & regret selling those cranks & tuff's to all those years ago. Poor guy.
The Unguarded Moment by The Church
Highway to Hell by AC/DC
Living in the 70's by Skyhooks....
dunno what else is here , I'm still sorting thru this pile of vinal record thingo's & looking to dump them to quality wav files before they go elsewhere.
JB
* I had spent the entire week reworking a 24/28TPI NOS & OS combination of dremel worked BB parts to get a Tioga sealed bearing BB to properly fit the Flite spindle & had only had time to do a "rough fit" of the crank arms onto the bike on morning of the display.
Both sides now fit snug & the sealed BB is now snug & sweet.

BITD i would have 1 peice cranks over 3pce every day of the week. They were the only cranks that held up to my punishment 3pce were troublesome and weak and much better suited to the track were heavy landings wernt as comon. You could leave 1pce cranks for years without adjustment where 3pce needed almost daily adjustment and boy that is fun LOL.

Nice one JB - That was the best Church track. Almost With You was also right up there.
Gotta agree on the 1 piece cranks. After WW3 a set of 175 or 180mm Takagis will still be here, along with the cockroaches...
Hey Glenn - swap him the cranks - so long as it's for a silver PK with Graphites!
bullyhotrod86jh
Mar 22 2007, 09:04 PM
haha, personally i question whether a 1 pc could seriously outlive a lot of 3pc, atleast newschool ones, I look at 1pc and worry personally.
One of those things that i just don't understand that happened back in the 80's.
Kurt.
Mar 22 2007, 09:09 PM
LOL Bully. If you can bend a set of 170mm Takagis, you get a certificate confirming you have gorilla b a l l s!!!

Kurt.
I saved the 45 record collection from getting thrown out by a guy called Tim , who didn't want them anymore. Tim worked @ Castle Hill Record Store & was playing around Sydney in a struggling garge band at the time.I think Tim is still working in the music biz , but not as a shop assistant anymore...I wouldn't be surprized if "Almost With You" & other cool titles from that era were in this still mostly unsorted ecclectic collection of 45's I have here.
Back to BMX , I made the change to 1 piece cranks when I sheared the axle off a the set of Maxy Cross
cranks on my Redline MXII , on the slow ride back from a hard fall during a race @ Shane Robinsons "backyard" track , a pretty wild track at the time to try to tame , when given a very short crowded practice session before the race.
With single pinch flites costing $275 new back then , 1 piece cranks were the only real option.
I saved up & quickly pieced together the ultimate driveline. 24TPI 175mm Takagi's , factory silver DX pedals , a Panda Power Disc & scored a new locally made sealed bearing BB that the bikeshop owner had picked up at a trade show , it came in an unmarked white cardboard box.
The same sealed BB turned up ~6 months later as stock in the shop , but with really gay packaging & now made by Gracecross , I think the "for winners only" was a bad marketing move , excelent sealed bearing BB tho , provided you shimmed it into place, still have all those goodies today.
I eventually got a set of no pinch 175mm flites complete with 44t sprocket , dimple spindle 2nd hand for $100 in early 1983.
I did _not_ buy my flites from caferacer & dread the day that the seller finds me & wants to buy his cranks back <heh>
I've acquired a few sets of flite cranks since then.

That first set was expensive at the time , but
by not selling them they turned into a real bargain.
These cranks look familiar cafe ???

I did find a pic of you riverjumping Coast , just not the BIG AIR one

I drove by that spot the other day , the tree's have gotten a LOT bigger since then & the hills behind have changed , but a good line for a runup & launching area could still be easily made to re create the shot....
Another summer without a bike jump into a river pool or lake , curses.....

I used to race with a guy BITD that was 13 years old and I personally saw him break 3 pairs of 1pc cranks out of the gate. Thinking back on it now that's quite a feat!!
just got back from a holliday in London and Paris on Sat, then spent the last 6 days in hospital hooked up to a drip with a very agressive virus. Had my first food yesterday, I love food .
does anyone know if you can still get skyway pad sets anywhere? My next bike is going to be a retro build. new bike but 80's inspired.

The Skyway pads are around although the stem pads without the holes (freestyle version) are rarer. Perhaps you can convince Ed at Colored Tuffs to do some authorised pad sets.
Now, the virus isn't an excuse just to get out of racing at Eastfield tomorrow is it? Glad you're back on the mend.
