No worries Ajay. I wanna see pics. I love old pics.
Rohan, you still don't have any skatepark forks!
Jan 30 2007, 04:27 AM
I'm sure if you give me 1 hr I could show you some
Jan 30 2007, 04:44 AM
OK. I posted this photo on another forum a little while back, but I like it so it probably deserves another run
The date is early 1978, the track is the first track at Blenheim Rd, North Ryde (Ryde Eastwood BMX). Of course that's yours truly dropping off the dropoff, with my factory footy jersey, jeans, footy socks and desert boots. The red frame is my first "real" BMX bike, a very early Quicksilver with DeCoster forks. Note that they didn't even have a headtube sticker yet.
Also very unusual (for me) is the lack of a front brake. This means I must have just bought the forks and hadn't had time to drill a hole in them to mount the front brake yet. DeCosters didn't come pre-drilled at that stage either...I rarely raced without a front brake...especially important going into the corner following this dropoff
Jan 30 2007, 05:27 AM
awsome pic alistair, keep'em coming
Jan 30 2007, 05:32 AM
Awsome pic Alistair. I remember my dad taking me to that track. I didn't like the newer track. I never raced on it but rode it a fair bit. We went to see what all this BMX hype was. The rest they say is history...
Jan 30 2007, 05:36 AM
OK, one more before I sign off....
Here's a view of the starting straight of Australia's first BMX track, taken during an early race meeting in 1977.
Big rollup eh?
Jan 30 2007, 08:07 AM
great shot of the first ryde eastwood track near the uni where i had my first race. this is real australian bmx history !
i ran the jeans tucked in footy sock look for my first year or so to, the two drop offs in the second straight where pretty fast back then followed by a right hand 90 degree corner. not easy to pull up a 50 pound mongoose with moto mags and a coaster brake.
Jan 30 2007, 02:22 PM
They are awesome pics Alistair. Is the Eastwood track still there.
I know that Eastwood is acknowledged as the first BMX track in Oz, starting in '77 - but have you seen this letter that Rick (Reilly1) posted early on the old thread?
There was obviously something going on up in Queensland a couple of years before that?!? Letterhead and all?!?
Do any of you Qld fellas know of a track at Tally Valley?
Jan 30 2007, 03:47 PM
Yes, THAT letter is very intiguing and indeed tantalising - as it does appear to indicate they were the earliest BMX track in OZ.
The facts and timing appear correct, Bicycle Motocross News did exist at that time and the the editor's name is correct etc...so it would appear that the letter is genuine. Check this link: Bicycle Motocross News Info
The only thing that is missing in the story as far as I can tell is any evidence that the track actually got built and races held. You may note that they reference a track design in the letter, but not a photo of the track itself.
What is possible here is that some well meaning parents did get together for their kids and started a club, including having a letterhead and all that, but for some unknown reason, the track and actual racing didn't happen. Alternatively, the track may well have been built and a race or two held, but it certainly appears that the activity didn't last long enough for someone to record it for us all If ANYONE out there can provide photos, race results etc.., that would be GOLD
It would be great to know more about this whole story of course, because if the track WAS built and racing DID take place, then it would certain be the first known organised BMX racing in Australia.
At the moment however, what we do know (and have evidence to prove ) is that the Track at Busaco Rd, North Ryde (now Macquarie Park) was created in early 1977 and that racing was held regularly by the Ryde Eastwood club from that point onwards. Not only that, but BMX racing activity has continued to be organised without interruption throughout Australia since then.

Mattblack - nice selection of bikes - the Patty and GJS are very unique.

Hey thanks Alistair. Nicely summed up.
Jan 31 2007, 02:13 AM
Hey Alistair. Ask old shool roy about that letter. He told me the track was where the Velodrome is now located in Nerang on the Gold Coast. About 2 mins from my old house! I think he has race pics from that track as well.
Jan 31 2007, 02:20 AM
Well, let's see them!
That's has alwasy been the weird thing about this letter as far as I was concerned - there was no other tangible evidence submitted....
Jan 31 2007, 02:38 AM
I wish you'd told me sooner - I lived in Brisbane, Beenleigh and Biggera Waters in 1975 - could of dropped by Nerang and taken some pics with my Kodak Instamatic!
Jan 31 2007, 03:15 AM
My first house in Qland was in Biggera waters. It's a dive now. Full of drunks and druggos.
Jan 31 2007, 03:16 AM
The pics are in the other aussie thread Alistair. I'll have a look.
Jan 31 2007, 03:25 AM
The first track was on the west side of the Nerang river...behind the old shopping center(Nerang st.). A few years later, in the early 80's the track was moved above the velodrome and was a down hill track with "Pro" section. Again , a few years later (90's), The track was moved to it's current location. BUT...i allways thought they were called the Nerang BMX Club. Maybe I called it that cause i was from somewhere else. lol. TALLY VALLEY was allways short for Tallabudurra valley. That's a bit further down the road than Nerang. Anyone else know about the Tally Valley bmx club?
Glen...i had a look for the video i had of the old downhill...but i couldn't find it.

LOL Glenn - yeah I don't think Biggera Waters is what it was. Beenleigh probably isn't quite what it was either. Funny thing is when we were in Brisbane we lived in the West End. Back then we were the only family who weren't Greek or Vietnamese or Islander I think. Now the West End is trendy and mega bucks. Go figure.
Jan 31 2007, 04:31 AM
Yeah Nerang was a dump and now it's getting better.
Speaking of nerang, I found this video of Bubba Harris racing at nerang track (the current track) during some Redline tour. My old neighbour was in this. Bubba at nerang
Jan 31 2007, 04:35 AM
Heres a vid of the new pro section at Nerang. I never got to race on this. They were building it when I moved up here. Nerang pro section
Jan 31 2007, 05:47 AM
hey old school roy i raced the track at nerang in late 1980 near the shoping centre on one of our little interstate trips. windsor track in brisbane run by blair shepard and his son scott was the early track id heard of in qld that was racing in mid to late 78. there,s even a little story in a 1978 bmxaction on windsor.
Jan 31 2007, 06:37 AM
Windsor was cool. We allways looked forward to racing at windsor. That was where i got to see the U.S pro's. (they went head first over the gate once) We used to ride into the city in race gear and helmets after racing was finished and my mates dad would pick us up. Great days.
Jan 31 2007, 06:38 AM
Until we were acquainted with "The Letter", I always thought that the first track in QLD was Winsdor and it started only marginally later than North Ryde, in 1977.
A lot of people might not know this, but there was actually a two round, Coca Cola sponsored, interstate challenge held in 1978 (I think it was 78) sort of like State of Origin, but earlier! The first race was held at Windsor and a bunch of us went up in a bus to Brisbane to race there. As I remember it, on the way home the bus broke down at Peats Ridge....prolonging the agony that is intersate bus travel.....
The second race was held at the "new" North Ryde track at Blenheim Road in late 78 I think. I'll have to have a hunt round and see if I still have some promotional posters for that event.
Jan 31 2007, 06:51 AM
The first time i went to the first nerang track was 1979(12yo) I don't know how long it was going for before that. My first time at the track was a spectaitor. The whole place was buzzin' for me.
I made a new one cause i could't find the old link. This is the downhill at nerang..... http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseacti...eoID=1852257410
Jan 31 2007, 08:05 AM
ajay i raced the second round of that interstate series at nth ryde, my dad has super 8 footage of it . it was a pretty big race for those days. lots of guys on madison tiepans from qld. i think this race could even be early 79 ?
Jan 31 2007, 08:12 AM
Roy that same trip i raced windsor for the second time that year. great night racing with brisbane in the background. great times.
Jan 31 2007, 01:49 PM
Yeah, it could be early 79....I'll have a look in my archive folder (yes, I actually have a record of the races I did in the early days ) and find out exactly when they were held.
Feb 1 2007, 02:04 AM
Hey Guys, I've been busy trying to get a couple of builds complete, hunting down all the little bits and pieces....I'm almost there....my question, does anyone have an mx 1000/900 dia compe caliper arms, just the arms would be okay, whole caliper would also be fine. I have all the components just not the actual arms. They can be any colour, as I will be refinishing them.
I have cash waiting just don't want to pay USPS anymore money! Thanks for any help.
Feb 1 2007, 02:56 AM
Sorry, none here Stu. I had a bit of a dig around but all i found was copy mx1000 arms. flung dung or cheng sh1t....something like that LOL.
Feb 1 2007, 03:25 AM
New to this site so bear with me.... great to meet you at bmx games Alastair but really there was no need to explain that you were a factory rider for QS... you were a legend round the epping eastwood area esp as QS was the favoured brand in my crowd... hell most had stripped dragsters painted black etc...Great pix at blenheim rd... is that an epping rugby jersey? I played for them from under7's.LOL.. I found a BW pic in an old BMX Australia mag of Alastair racing with John Crews, Stu Thomsen and Mick Wiltshire... neck and neck...what a lineup!!! i will get it scanned somewhere but quality doesnt look great. cheers paul
Feb 1 2007, 03:40 AM
Yes, that photo is one of my fondest memories. Unfortunately however, the race ceased being a race for me about 1 second after the gate dropped, when I quickly found out that I was actually a very small fish in an ocean of skill and speed! Fortunately, the photo was taken before that inadequacy because truly obvious
But as a life experience, being able to say that I have been on the gate with Stu Thompson (my personal BMX hero) was priceless and something I will never forget.
Feb 1 2007, 03:47 AM
Thanks for having a look Roy, I'm sure some will show up eventually. Hey are you coming for a pedal on Sunday in Brissy with Roberto, Scotty and whoever else is coming? It should be a good day, and will be good to get my GT out for a pedal...
Hopefully a few bits will be back from the chromer tomorrow, it's only been three weeks of promises
Mick Wiltshire there is a name that I haven't heard for awhile, reminds me dude called Dale Shearer, I think he made DSP frame sets for a while...

Feb 1 2007, 04:18 AM
I take it Ian is Dougs son or grandson? What a great pic.
Feb 1 2007, 04:21 AM
Last time I spoke to Roberto, he was talking about meeting at 10.00am Sunday at Southbank Car Park and riding over to the Botanic Gardens, but he was going to confirm it all...but as far as I know that is what is happening....Come on Glenn, it is only a few hours down da road
Feb 1 2007, 04:28 AM

Feb 1 2007, 05:28 AM
By the way, my comment is directed at the Hutch frame set.
Feb 1 2007, 05:30 AM
Thats cool Alistair. One of my school friends had a cool dragster framed bike like that. I have a set of those forks in my stash. Wouldn't be hard to build that baby up.
Feb 1 2007, 05:31 AM
I'll do 2 Hutch frames, in fully restored condition for the BIN price, plus I'll throw in free delivery!
Feb 1 2007, 05:33 AM
I look at that an my ankles are screaming...Cotter Pins!
Feb 1 2007, 05:40 AM
I love it. That just screams old school. mmm dragsters are cheap! I had better finish the shockie with M/Mags first!
Feb 1 2007, 05:47 AM
And the "trick" bit is the 3 speed rear hub....
