I'm told leaving the (road) bike in the van on hot days may lead to inner tube failure, as the heat stress expands the tube to failure, and that to correct I should probably let some air out if I'm not going to be riding it for a bit. (Otherwise I air them up to pretty much max pressure or even then some.)

I was told this after finding a flat tire after the bike spent two days in the van.

Thoughts?

A few years ago at the Ridline Cup West finals in Mesquite, NV you could hear the tubes pop in the parking lot. it was 110 degrees or hotter and many had boosted the pressure before heading to the race.

I see a trackside popcorn popper invention on the horizon. not available for sale in Minnesota.

Makes sense to me...but the temps and starting pressures would have to be pretty high in order to blow them out just sitting there IMO.

Riding a tire will raise the temp of the tube just like it does in a car.

Hey Elvis,

This just happened to my BMX cruiser yesterday! I was planning on going riding when I got off work and had my bike in my Pathfinder all day.
When I took my bike out, the tube in the rear tire was blown. Of course, I figured it just had a thorn or something in it... It did not. Glad I had a spare tube with me.
