Ok, so here is the deal! I race BMX so I am use to a fullface helmet! Now get me on the road with cars going 60 and you are going to put piece of tiny foam on my head?? I know I would look dumb with a fullface helmet on on the road. Those small little helmets look like they will protect NOTHING! So I have a skateboard helmet, Protec. Is there something I am overlooking or will I just look like I don't know how to protect my "priceless jewel"?

I think the protec will protect a bit better then anything! Comments????

Oh man now to the critical part! PADS, SHORTS, etc! I know there are a lot of men on here but as far as us females what do you look for in shorts! I actually hate the fact of spandex, but I know why you need them! I found a pair of cheap shorts and then I found a pair of 120 shorts, with all the latest and greatest! Is it just what you like or do I go and get the best shorts b/c they are GOING to be better? Comments?

I use the 661 Pro Bravo Full Face Helmet on the streets of Chicago. It's light weight so you don't feel like you are over doing it.

I've seen literally dozens of roadies who have taken brutal high-speed headers and lived to tell the tale all because of that little piece of foam. We do such a huge volume of helmet sales that most local crash replacements come to our shop for the new lid, and we get to see how well they work firsthand.

Expensive shorts are expensive for a reason -- you get what you pay for. Not just in quality and fit of the garment but in durability and life of the product. My wife wears Sugoi, Descente and Pearl Izumi depending on the type of riding, but if she had to choose only one, it would be the Pearl Izumi Microsensor 3DPro

And if you're going to be doing huge miles, don't forget the butter.

Thanks Evan. I forgot you are the Master Roadie over here! Been awhile since we talked. I guess this comes from the FF/medic in me also! I have seen my share of brain matter from car vs bike! Now I am sure there is more to that then what I seen. Rather it was a walmart helmet or a 100 helmet I am not sure! Rather it fit right I don't know that either! Just from falling in racing with a full face and having whiplash and a headache for a week, makes me wonder how those helmets work?

Thats funny those are the shorts I think I like the most, I will probably go with those! Now as far as ordering them I have NO idea on size!

Butter?

I'll get a pic of my bike up on myspace later

Chamois butter.

As for roadies...there are 2 types of roadie- those who have been hit by a car and those who are waiting to get hit by a car.

Fortunately I am one of the former who lived to tell the tale. I had one of those little helmets on but my head never hit the ground- told you I was fortunate- but I'm happpy I had it on anyway. It did give me a slight reason to go out an buy another helmet though...roadies are always looking for excuses to buy new parts-LOL.

Read up on one brand of chamois butter HERE

It's a good product, but there's a Swiss brand called Assos that I prefer. (That's pronounced with a long A, by the way.)

Click on the little yellow button on the order form for the size chart -- it is really quite accurate.

RC, you've seen me post pics of my wife riding road and MTB in the past. She's very serious about cycling, and was a successful sport-class mountain bike racer for a few years.

Two years ago, while training, she let her form get wonky over a series of big downhill high-speed whoops and went over the bars at about 25 mph, fully clipped in -- basically started a front flip off the jump and augered in on her head. The first thing to hit the ground was the top of her helmet, a Giro road model.

The blow knocked her cold and she slid on her face, neck and shoulder for 10 yards or so. Yet, she came out of it with nothing but the abrasions. No concussion, no broken bones. She actually rode out to the parking lot so we could drive to the hospital.

At the ER, the docs were examining the helmet and marveling at how well it took the force and dissipated it exactly as it was designed to do. The helmet foam even split in two spots, but it remained intact as the hard shell held it all together.

Having been in the class of having been hit by the car, I can tell that the helmet made no difference, as my body took the hit. Two monthes later, I'm back riding

my former co-worker would have been killed on Halloween if not for his foam road helmet. With one, he still suffered fractures in his face....

I"m sure they help, but in 83" when I got the first road bike, didn't wear them, started again two years ago, and just never started, although, if you want to ride with any of the local clubs it's mandatory
