What do you all think of clone parts? I'm building an early 90s Robinson. I've found a clone silver Suntour Power stem, clone silver Suntour seat post clamp, clone Comp III skinwalls, and Victor beartraps (clone of Suntour XCII pedals). These are all VERY cheap and brand new. Compare that with getting old used and expensive equivalents. Pretty much everything else will be genuine.

well i say the question is what do you think of them?
Don't forget, well atlest most of us, build these bikes for ourselves.
but my oppinion, is i wouldn't sweat it, not every build has to be the stockorocko, geninuabbely definitlyable. Such as those words i just mde, aren't genuine but they work, and i'm happy with them.

Its all personal taste and you can always upgrade down the road. I broke enough name brand stuff to never go near knock off Team Cycle stuff. I bought a fake tough neck stem once. It was for my scooter and the head was disconnected form the quill in a week. I miss my halfpipe!!!!
However all the parts you mentioned are all 80's parts and not early 90's. You should shoot more for odessey shark bites, and a used dk stem.
I can however understand on tires. Their are plenty of guys running knock off tires on builds in the vintage forums. Plus their are people who swoar by Cheepo's because of compound differences compared to Comp 3's and others. I personally would never run them on my bikes, I would rather run newer style tires to roll around on then knock offs. Either way then you can keep the tires you spent a fortune on for show and pix.

NBL, I was wondering about the reliability since this will be a rider. I guess I'm being a little impatient. The truth is that winter is setting in up here and I won't be able to ride it anyway. So I've got all winter to gather my stuff.
I think I was shooting for 80s stuff because I don't know anything about 90s stuff. My knowledge gap is from '88-'05!
I could get the knockoff stuff because it is so cheap and replace with genuine later.

yeah, well that's what a lot of us younger riders are doing, buying cheaper parts, alot start on completes, but, it's a new bike with in the year, slowly upgrading them. say something brakes, or as we get some spare cash, or come across a great deal. and slowly get a better quality bike.

I can understand the comp III and XCII knock offs, but not the stem and clamp. You see suntour clamps on ebay all the time for $5.99 or less, and you can usually score a TNT or a profile inverted stem for around 20.00.
Personally I'd rather have an origonal than a clone. even if it's a bottom end item.
And if your interested I have both, the TNT and Profile for sale or trade.

I haven't seen a silver seat post clamp in the color I want. I have a brand new Suntour gold one coming that I will try to to strip off the anodizing.
The Suntour stems I've seen have been pretty expensive. There are a few DKs on there now that look pretty appealing to me.
I definately would rather have genuine - I think I'm just being impatient!

I scored a DK stem for 20.50 and Araya 7x chrome rims for $50. Pretty happy about the rims!

Sounds like another happy customer. Half the fun is the wait and the search. We are all very glad you didn't give up and start being a Team Cycle factory co-pilot!!!
I had seen your Binghamton Ny post so I figured it would be your rider. Where do you live in New York? I used to Live in Monroe New York and race at all the New York tracks.
For midschool parts do a search someone was asking about what midschool parts were good for a build. Myself and others pretty much did a Mid School 101 build but I can't remember what the name was on it. Also if you want drop me a PM and I will be happy to give you some suggestions for your build.
