Not sure why the guy was running the pitbulls on a bike with 990 mounts, wonder if he ever thought about what those funny looking nubs were on the chainstays. They will be replaced with 990's soon as well as replacing the challenger fork with a pair of pitchforks. The challenger fork looks just like the earliest holmes fork, but with single thick dropouts. The murray holmes was one of my best friends bikes and was in perfect condition when I bought it from him BITD, I always rode his hand me downs. Was yours the yellow one that was up for sale about a year ago?

Some people swear those pitbulls will outperform cheap (diatech / tektro) 990's. I have never been able to get over how ugly they are biggrin.gif

I could give you scans for free but I won't sell them. Best I can offer lol. I have a full RV set in the bag. And I have the Neal W. ones too minus the proper headtube badge, just have a black regular badge in place of that one. Scans only, sorry if thats not good for you, but at least I have something to offer.
The Gooch
I am interested, PM sent.
Thanks,

Christmas came today, I've been trying to get this for almost six months! Now i need to figure out what wheels I need to use on the build. threaded holmes with no 990 mounts and 1/4" one piece dropouts. I figure that puts it about '92 or '93. I had the same crappy 7x's forever so I don't remember what would have been a good choice, any ideas? smile.gif

Nice seann! But remember, just cause it doesn't have 990 mounts doesn't mean it can't be 94 or 95 either. As for wheels, Sun Mistral's with GT flip flop hubs! At least that's what I had on my Dirtbike back in the day.
Steve Bourke
i thought you had hutch forks. oh the stem.
dan restro
thought i would revive this thread.
a 1995 dirtbke just about to be stripped so best i get this pic in.

s&m challenger

s&m rv 24"

Sweet bikes, and love the gold redneck. I remember challenger 20's with 1" threaded, but did the cruiser ever have threaded forks?

Heres me on my birthday ride in Sedona. I have been rocking my retro jersey on rides for a while. I have a S&M headtube sticker on there which has been a 10 yr tradition on all my mtb's. I am sporting the green warpig headtube sticker from the 20 yr anniv party.

Nope just a chill ride with my chick. I let her borrow my trail helmet and I left the Troy Lee Full face in the car.

Killer bike. The only thing I would do is throw a red seat on it. Really like the way the red "pops" on the bike.

I don't have any Challenger decals for it but I figured a smooth paint job and a few shields will go along way. I also have a few stickies from the 20th ann. party... I should have the frame back this week. I will keep you posted.

for lack of a digi camera, here's my new addition to the collection.

LONG-HAUL
Wow, that's a cool mk1 Holmes cool.gif

Original decals too?

Craig
ds-1
all decals on the holmes are original. bike sat for 18 years.was sold at a garage sale and the 2nd buyer used it as a pit bike at mx races.lost the allen bolts for the bullseye hub on the front wheel so replaced with a walmart/kmart mongoose front wheel. on one side the decals are slightly scuffed from him letting the wrench hit as he tightened the nuts. downtube decal has minor scuffing as well. f/f is in imaculate condition.dropouts barely have any marks.seems that way back in 1990 the first owner used the proper washers to preserve the dropouts.
am the 3rd owner and am in the process of figuring out what parts i want to keep. swapped the regular dk stem for an invert and swapped the pedals for some victor platforms just to add some color.the wheels are being sold soon and replaced with?? have no idea yet. had some gold 7x rims and thought they might go well with the s&m pads but decided to stick with all chrome. just not sure about what hubs will be running.

I would keep the Bullseye on there. They are great hubs. They were the hubs of choice for me during that time period. Go to Home Depot or any hardware stre and get new allen bolts. Try for grade 8 level or any high quality allen bolt.

My '94 (?) Dirtbike:

Man this thing heavy compared to my Elf; feels like I could drop it off a mountain and ride it away.

Nice Ride Steve. I'm a huge fan of the Chocolate Brown Dirt Bikes. It's around 94 give or take a year. It's got some '97-'98 decals. I love those Thrasher decals. Nice bike. If you ever decide to part with the frame and stem...

...let me know. biggrin.gif

Here's another shot that for some reason didn't load in the last post:

Secret Spin
Nice. I absolutly love that brown color. Here's my recent DirtBike. I made it's own post for it but now I am thinking that was a mistake and I should have posted it here...so here it is again in the right place. 91-95...i can't pinpoint what year it is without decals. maybe you guys would know better? the wheels hint earlier 90's, but the GT parts on it suggest maybe 94/95 possibly, idk.

Measure the diameter of the seatstay and chainstay tubing. If it 3/4" it's later. Maybe 93-95. If it's smaller then it's probably 91-93.
Secret Spin
Yep theyre both 3/4". Thanks Miko. Actually, both of my chrome 1" non-990 Dirtbike frames have 3/4" seat/chain stays. Thanks a bunch.
Miko
Maybe Ryan P. can measure his Badd/Dirt Bike and report what the chainstay diameter is. His is circa '91-'92. I know the early mk1 Holmes had thinner chainstays. I think they switched to 3/4" when they went back to the double diamond rear for the mk3 Holmes. I think that was late '92 or early '93
Matt S.
Great looking Dirtbikes guys! The brown is definitely cool. Didn't they the early Holmes frames come in brown as well? Thought I remember I guy from POSH here in PA getting a brown Holmes when they first came out. Bah. Whatever. Very cool nonetheless.

Just waiting on chainring bolts and I'll throw up a few pics of my Dirtbike(finally!)

Man, both those Dirtbikes rule!

Secret, that setup is perfect. I'm jealous of the pegs and Jive Handles! Those GT tires too...

I love Dirtbikes/Holmes without 990's...

Thanks guys. Yea the pegs are early S&M pegs(whatever they called them if anything, idk).
My DirtBike is all as built when it was new BITD. Even the tubes and cable! Just took everything apart and tuned her up. It did have a GT bolt-on bashguard at one time though cuz there is the crimped chainstay bridge that lines up exactly with the one I have when I hold it up to it. Might just put it on there, lol.

Haha...got the last piece to the puzzle for the '95 first year 1 1/8 threadless project....the correct pitchforks for it. now just have to build up the wheels and have the frame powdered yellow, which i already have arrangements for. it will be posted in this thread asap.

EL CID
Nice rides, nothing like a made is usa chromoly bike still going strong!!! I am putting my 92-95 holmes together may have pics of it up today
Secret Spin
Haha, got to talkin with a kid from here on AIM thats into 80's freestyle bikes about Fred Blood from BITD, so I threw an extra peg on the Dirtbike i recently shown here and went out front thinking I could just simply do a Power Mower like I used to after 20 years...remember that trick? lol didn't happen, funny

http://s72.photobucket.com/albums/i182/Bil...lampshim012.flv

yea man! and a lawnmower too! lol

Matt S.
Right on Secret!
Secret Spin
I couldnt resist snapping this raw classic holmes kit up for cheap cuz i can throw it together quick to have an intresting rider that i don't have to worry about. i figure i'm spending alot of time/money to get a couple collector S&M's done, then why not take this dealie for $70 and have one that i can casually ride at the trails. wouldn't want to risk breaking the older projects i have going when they get done and i want to start saving my race bikes for racing. lacin some suzue sealed Hi's up to chrome BFR's next week and it will be done. not setting it up for street but as period correct dirtjumper. fat/skinny blackwall rainbowcomp 3's, no pegs, no gyro, no front brakes.

Secret Spin
i love post hoggin' this thread i guess lol.
so here's a S&M collage i made for ya's all.
