My friend's dad is cleaning out the house, so I'm getting a dyno freestyle bike. I don't know too much about it, it's buried behind a whole bunch of stuff. It's been sitting since the mid nineties, and somewhere in this bike's life, my friend's dad turned it into an exercise machine by welding together a jig so that the pegs would rest on it with the wheel elevated.
I've only seen the bike twice. It's baby blue with white accents, sidepull brakes, rotor, pegs on the fork, and either 6-spoke or slanted 5-spoke mags with rotted white tires. It's complete but very crusty. I don't know anything about Dynos but from the color scheme and the graphics, I'm guessing it's a mid-eighties model?
As it needs a complete going-over and a repaint too, and possibly some big $$$, is it worth restoring Or should I just tell my friend's dad to toss it?

post pics. can't tell if it's a keeper unless we know what it is. Dyno has some good stuff, but also made some Taiwanese crap.

I don't know the year of the bike, though. If I do find out it is 1985 or older, would someone be able to move this thread to the "Vintage" category?
Reason why I'm debating whether or not to toss it is because I don't have the time or money right now to restore another bike, I'm nearing completion of a 1976 Schwinn Mini-Scrambler for my daughter, if all goes well it should be rebuilt and ready for Christmas. But I do have the space for another project. I will try to get some pics for u guys!

sounds like a dyno d-tour or if its late 80's/early 90's its detour. 5 spoke scissor mags its mid 80's. 6 spoke gt mags its late 80's early 90's (for the most part). like above seeing pics will help figure out the year. also if you could get the serial number that would help too. if its got 3 spoke mags but looks like the older dyno's then its a dyno air. does it have a laid back seatpost (dyno drainpipe) and pretzel bars? if you are thinking about refreshing the paint i'd have the whole thing powdercoated frame, fork, bars, seatpost. i always see dyno stickers popping up on ebay, so that shouldn't be too hard to get. also check the tech and restoration forum see how guys have bleached mag's to make em look good as new. you could even find a'me grips and sometimes gt logo tires in white if you are trying to go for the full restoration. anyway get some pics up and rock and roll!

Like the guys said, the olders ones are worth some bucks.
This one went for $350+ in the summer on ebay. Granted, it is a nice example but still.

OK guys here's some pics of the bike. As I said it's pretty crusty. It's actually got slanted six-spoke mags. Can u tell what year or model it isit is? I haven't picked it up yet so I don't have the SN# yet. So, what do u think? I really like the mags!

Thanks Joe and 91 master, so it's a GT? About 1987? After looking at the pics, I noticed that it has the rear brakes mounted upside-down on the chainstays. Kinda surprising cuz I didn't know chainstay-mounted brakes came out this early plus I've never seen them mounted upside-down before. Was this widespread among freestyle bikes of the era? Could u guys tell me more about this model? You're getting me stoked on fixing it up!

I think thats a pro performer because of the mags and acs locking levers.check the brakes, if they are real white dia compe ad 990's it might be a pro freestyle tour, but pro frestyle tours had the gt superlace wheels. but yea have it stripped down to the metal look at all the welds and make sure the frame is straight and has no cracks, then have it powdered. gt performer and pro freestyle stickers of that vintage can be had on ebay for 10 to 15 bucks.

Just as others said, definitely an 87, probably a Pro Freestyle Tour(non Team Model).
AJKbikes.com has the decals for it, any parts needed are fairly easy to come by. Here's a pic of a 87 Team Model courtesy of AJKbikes.com . Awesome score!

its a pro freestyle tour for sure. they came with mags or superlace wheels which you had the choice of. i had a purple pro freestyle tour with mags before i traded the f/f for a blue one. if you keep it,most definetly restore it. Rad Dad 67 stopped by my house once and rode my restored 87 gt pft.

I picked up the bike from my friend's house and brought it home tonight. I took a few more pictures so we can positively ID it. BTW, you've been great in helping me with this bike so far, thank u to all! The front brake says DIA-COMPE NIPPON, the rear is a dia-compe ad-990, and what's up with that chainwheel? It has two nipples on it and there are a few other holes that looks as if something was there before because it's stretched out. Although I haven't gone over the bike totally, I can't find a SN# anywhere. I checked the usual suspects -- bottom bracket, head tube, chainstays, nothing.
Pro Freestyle Tour? Pro Performer? p.s. the mags say GT Performer and O.G.K. Made In Japan.
p.p.s. the brake levers say DIA-COMPE 182

How can you tell if it's a Pro Freestyle or a Pro Performer?? I just picked up a GT. It's serial number says it's a 87. Has 990 brakes mounted the say way but stickers say Pro Performer. How can you tell the difference between the two??

Definately a Pro Freestyle Tour. A friend had a 87 Pro Performer and it had 880 front brakes versus the Nippons like you have. Awsome score. Looks like someone did a hack job on the chainwheel and put some plain allen bolts in it.

Thanx guys for the positive ID!!! Now I can get the right decals. Hey boostinallovryou, where is the serial # on your bike? I looked all for it and can't find it anywhere.
BTW, are there any differences between a GT Pro Freestyle Tour and the Pro Performer, besides the brakes (and I gather) the rims?

If I remember right my friends 87 Pro performer had a 1 pc chainwheel instead of the 2 piece like yours. The only other difference that I know of is the front brakes and the Pro Performer didn't come with forkstands. the S/N should be on the rear dropout but they are sometimes hard to see because of thick paint.

I forgot that Pro Freestyle tours came with your choice of mags or superlace. I knew a spoiled rich kid poser BITD who had a Pro Freestyle Tour Team Model that came with the same mags that you have.

The serial number is on the left hand side rear dropout. The first set of 3 - 4 numbers are the build date. I.E 1087 for oct 1987. Mine has a 1 pc chainwheel and the front brakes just say diap-comp, no nippon. So I guess we are slowly finding the differences between Pro Performer and Pro Freestyle.

Thanks, I found the serial#!!! Mine is 8874071, so mine was built in August of 1987. Sweet! I just finished restoring my daughter's 1976 Schwinn Mini-Scrambler today, yeah! So I'mma start this one very soon
