QUOTE (JOE T. @ Aug 31 2009, 10:35 AM)

I was a part of the Cyclecraft family in 86. As an employee of the Martinos I was introduced to the ways of working for what you want in life and enjoying them at the same time.
We built bikes for Murray, Haro, Studd and the first batch of TNT's along with any other wild creation we could dream of. (scooters, gravity bikes) FRED'Z bars were one of the best projects, I found the old Vector jigs and added a different miter. this became the most copied bar ever. Those bars are nearly industructable Im still riding an origanal set today (23 year) but with much more grace than the flip I did on the backyard track.
I worked with all of the people mentioned by DA PAINTER. I remember that the dog was the employee of the month several times once for biting a thief. Wade and his scout scared the crap out of me several times including a trip down a deadend road at about 50 MPH with a dirt hill at the end (the barrel factory) THE Duke boys had nothing on Wade. I remember the team being around all summer long and dinner time. What no love for fishbait. Josh Martino
Many thank to the Martinos
Tricker Joe
Cool I dig this! I'd love to hear more stories about back in the day.
Thanks for posting this.

Anybody remember the Weed Wagon? The VW bus with no brakes that you had to downshift to slow down (Uphill both ways to the shop!!!)
Brian I was only 13 when I started riding for Cycle Craft and I thought it was called the Weed Wagon because they parked it in the weeds. LOL

Joe and Betty you guys did more for the BMX scene back then than you probably know, and I just want to say thanks, for making such a good product and having ability to help all of those riders get to races and have fun at them. It set an example ...
Betty,
This thread is full of quote worthy lines about the you and your family. The respect is not only obvious, but very well deserved. My son still has and rides his CycleCraft Black and Silver 20" and the cruiser he got while at dK. The BMX world does owe you more than it can repay.

Glad to find this thread . I dont know much about the CC history so this really helped out . I quit racing in 1985 so I missed the CC evolution . I can tell you this the founders and builders would be very proud of the next generation of Cyclecraft bikes . The team will be hitting alot of races this year so keep an eye out for us . The baby blue and purple are back .

I think just the shear number of people who responded to this proved there is more respect out there than you thought.
The only other thread w/ more responses is the STR-1 thread....
and that thread became aggressive in some manners.

Weird the STR 1 is owned by a former CycleCraft employee. CycleCraft in the 80's was so much more than just a bike manufacturer the Martinos helped support racing by vending at nationals and encoraging people to try their best. I think they were worried more about the sport and their riders than the products they made, anybody can put tubing together. The employee's of Cyclecraft enjoyed the work and took pride in the bikes we built. Have the team hanging around the shop during the summer was a blast. I hope that the current incarnation of CycleCraft can have the same positive effect on the sport.

I also raced for the Martinos. I raced for the Factory Vector team in 84 and 85. They have done more for the sport of BMX than most realize. They were always friendly and would do anything for there riders. I thank them for allowing me the honor to race for them.

great read....lots of memories in there. I remember racing BJ Gant in my 16-17 cruiser class at Peachtree city WOS in 88 or 89 and he took me out in the first turn breaking my collarbone. CC had a TON of awesome guys.

I loved my Cycle Craft and won many races on it. I remember my first Cycle Craft was a Matt McCullough<<probably misspelled that last name there. Anyways that was an aluminum frame with titaniam forks and I loved that bike. Here are a couple pics of me racing it. You will notice that the colors are backwards on the frame between the pics. Look closely at the World Cup photo I was in gate 8 and you can see the frame is yellow in the front and black in the back and the other 2 shots its the opposite. I had just got the new frame and fork right before the World Cup in 1987 and had only raced it a few times at my local track. I had just gotten used to the bike becuase it was so light. Anyways when I flew to Cali for the big race the guys from cyclecraft were there and had a new frame for me and wanted to swap me out becuase my frame wasnt reinforced at the head tube and apparaently they had a few of them break. I refused to let them touch the bike until after the race becuase I was afraid it might be different in some way. Anyways ended up taking 2nd place after a mishap in the main on the last turn and they swapped out the frames afterwards. That was the best bike I ever raced. I have a Pro size F&F hanging in my garage and plan to build it someday...

Back around 1988 I knew a guy that raced a CycleCraft. It was pink and a 24" cruiser. I remember he was really fast on it. Weird story; some jerk off stole it out of our friends shed, and a month or two later I bought it at a flea market off some old guy. It was repainted red/silver. Lance saw my cousin riding and immediately recognized the pads and brakes/lever as his bike. I was 16 at the time and didn't realize CC were rare and expensive so I never even thought it was Lance's bike. Naturally we let him have it back, he was stoked about getting his ride back. Now as an adult I realize I should have got some info from the guy selling it to give to the police since they filed a report the day after it was stolen.
