I see people refering to there race bikes and jump bikes these days and I just saw on a vintage thread someone showing his jump bike back in the early 80's. Since the late 80's early 90's is my era I wanted to ask you mid schoolers if you had both.
Me, I only had one 20" and it was for everything, all I did was change wheelsets for jumping and that was not until I was 17. That was because I ran 1.50's for my race wheels. Even then I would forget to change them out and jump with my race wheels anyway. However I was always a smooth conservative jumper not a big trick bail off your bike kind of jumper. Do not get me wrong I have folded a rim or two, but tossing the bike was not my style.
I just do not see how riding two different bikes could help you with your racing unless they were identical rides and you just had beefier stuff on the jump bike.

I remember helping my dad build a quarter pipe for our backyard that I jumped my Pro Racer on. The same bike (including wheels) that I raced every weekend.

same bike for flatland, jumping, trail riding, riding to school, to the mall, to the beach, etc.
From what I understand, my RL-20II had the exact same dimensions as a PL-20.

Yeh, same bike here fo everything; dirt, racing, plain old riding. However, I can be sure I did not put the pressure on y race bike that today's dirt jumping and street would put on today's race frames. It wasn't until I started racing again after a 2 year lay off did I start seeing the first glimpses of people having multiple bikes. Nowadays, its pretty commonplace. Mind you, back then we all rode chromo frames, not aluminum: think that is the reason why today's kids have more than 1 bike?

When I was 14(1990) I got a summer job. I then bought a Robinson complete. That became my jumper/ride to school/loaner to my friends bike, I had a Kastan uniblade "race" bike that I babied

I had one. My trusty PL20 did it all. Ran alloys for racing & Tuffs for trails/street/ramps.

I rode the one CW I had for everything. Maybe that's why it ended up cracked at the top tube and headtube.

My cycle craft was my race bike, jump bike, street bike, and road bike. Back in the days of just riding your bike and your only worry was rain. So simple then.

I had a "junker/beater" bike along w/ the race 20" and cruiser. The junker compiled:
Hutch Pro Racer frame - was cracked and re-welded at the headtube
Haro forks - I broke the dropouts on the Hutch forks trying un-turndowns
Skyway Tuffs - got used and for cheap
Redline Flights - in 170mm so they were too short to run on the race bike, got them used and for cheap
cheapo tires - off a Huffy ProThunder
GT Moose Bars - got free from a friend
Bent laidback seatpost
various other parts that worked and were either replaced on the race bikes or I got for free/cheap.
Overall the bike look pretty junky, but rode decently. I didn't toss it but it definitely didn't recieve the love the race bike did

I started off doing flatland with my '89 Dyno Detour then as my body got stronger I started to do jumps. In the mid 90s I got a hold of a my friends Mongoose and began to use that for jumping and racing and retired the Dyno. Shortly after I stopped riding altogether and focused more on skateboarding since a park finally opened in the area. I started flatland freestyle and skateboarding at the same time.
Anyways, I ended up using the Mongoose for the longest time for jumping because it had those kick *** new-to-me canti brakes I think they are called? The ones where the posts are closer to the dropouts than the 990s are. I felt more comfortable jumping my Mongoose because it had shorter bars than my Dyno has and I wasn't as tall then as I am now. But I loved my Dyno for flat of course.
So yeah in the end I ended up using two bikes. Now I have three bikes. I use my Standard STA for modern day street riding, my Dyno for flatland and mild street riding, and my Auburn for racing and jumping.

I had an old mongoose for jumping and riding around. For racing I had a Skyway, teardrop frame and all. I sure wish I still had that frame and fork combo.
