Full Version: Who raced with equal size tires front and rear?

I've alwyas used tires that were around 1.75 front and rear until around 1997 when a friend sold me his Mongoose that was completely original at the time. The front tire was larger than the rear and I cracked the front hub and bent the forks really bad.

Well I recently got back into riding and I got new tires for my Auburn, 1.75 for the rear and 2.1 for the front. I hate it, all it does is make the front feel bouncy, I can't feel the track or the jumps well at all, and the bike feels sluggish. I'm going back to a 1.75 front tire, but I wish they had IRC Sirens in 1.95 that I could try for the front.

I never understood having a larger tire in the front. Why did everyone ride them that way? it probably does not help that I grew up riding a freestyle bike.

I always ran a larger front tire, still do. I feel a bit more confident in the turns, seemed to help me last weekend at a sandy track, really was able to rail the corner better than the other guys. They even made a comment about the 'big tread' on my front tire.

I run (on a cruiser) 24x1.5 rr and 24x 1.85 ft (maxxdaddy) still to this day.

I even have my kids are running the bigger 1 3/8 ft and smaller 1 1/8 rr.

Yeah, leaning forward in a turn puts your distribution to the front, making a 2.125 front tire ideal for traction in a turn. The 1.75 in the rear is for less rotating weight..

So what do you guys think about running a 1.5 in the rear and a 1.75 in the front? I weigh 145 pounds and I am 6'2" tall, do you think I'll be fine if I keep it smooth? I flow rather than jump. I wanna smaller front tire but I wanna try and keep the weight transfer somewhat in proportion to what it is now.

Rich, I know a guy (who's Nag 6 - 41-45) running 1.5 front and rear. I don't see how he does it. If the bigger front makes you feel more comfortable, do it!

You're 6'2" 145 lbs? Dude, you don't need to worry about your tires...eat a pork chop! On the reals, though...I used to always run 1.75 tires front and rear. Nowadays, I still love smaller tires, but I run a tad bigger in ther front. On my cruiser I run a 1.85/1.5 combo--nothing accelerates faster than a 1.5 on the back of a big bike! On my 20" I use a 1.85/1.75, and even on my street bike I run a 1.95/1.75--which is saying something, 'cause some guys use 2.10 on the BACK. (I use a ACS TRUE on the back of my street bike with a mere 120 lbs of pressure...it's like riding on a brick--but a really fast brick.)

Oh, and I have noticed a lot of guys running 1.75 IRC Sirens front and rear on cruisers...because that's the only size they make in 24".

Larger front is the only way to go

i like fattys up front more traction ofcourse more aera more traction!!

I always ran 1.75 front and rear. The bike just seemed for responsive running the 1.75 up front.

I go to the gym and I eat right. I'mnot buff, just slim. I've been skateboarding just about everyday since 1992 so that has helped a lot I am sure.

I wish IRC made a 1.95 Siren. Anybody know of a good 1.95 race tire that has tread similiar to the comp III tread or better?
sanjosebmx
Gooser, what 24x1.5 tire are you running. The only one I know of is the Primo v-trac. Is there another or are you copying me?
red&black_attack
BITD, I ran 1.75 on front and rear. Now I run 1.95 on front and 1.75 on the rear.

I've never cared for the 2.125 front. To bulky.
M.Curphy
Larger in the front for me was also handling, seemed to me it was just nicer having the extra rubber to help with those nasty turns.. Course bitd in the ABA expert class, I could of used some body armor too.. Especially in the turns.
Rob Spencer
Bitd I ran 1.5 rear and 1.75 front. Now I use 1.75 on both. It probably doesn't matter what you run, just run what feels good for you. My .02

Yeah the meaty front tire feels builky and I can't get a feel for it on jumps, especially rollers. I'm just gonna go ahead and get another IRC Siren 1.75 front.

Props on the 1.75 for both ends. I always raced this setup, and response and traction were never a problem. 'Course I'm a skinny guy too!

I raced 1.50s front and rear until I was about 14, from then till now I run 1.50 rear 1.75 front, on 1.50 rims, sometimes I run both 1.75 tires. I'm 5'11 180, never had a problem. I could never stand fat tires. I ran 1 3/8 until I was 13.
Gooser
Sanjosebmx--Dude, this is weird. I run a V-trac on the back, and my new bike has Phil hubs and a White Industries freewheel. And it's an Intense frame. I think you replied to some of my other posts saying that you run this stuff...

So yeah, I must be copying you without knowing it. Though I'm going to say I was running the V-trac and the freewheel first.
LeadSled1
I'm waiting for the Supercross 24 X 1.5 tire to come out. I want to ditch that V-trac tractor tire on the back in a bad way. I'm running a comp III on the front.

20" is SX 1.75 back and 2.125 front. (previously the same sized holy rollers)
jj
I ran 1-3/8 until I was 15 years old. I've never been a fan of big tires! Now I run a 24x1.75 IRC Siren up front, and a 24x1.5 V-Trac on the back.

Jess- I'm eagerly awaiting the 24x1.5 SX tire as well. My nephew is running the 20" SX tires now at 85 PSI and he loves them. Judging by how many 24x1.75 Holy Rollers we sell, I've got to believe that a 24x1.5 Supercross would blow off the shelves.

Personally i wouldnt get sirens. they grip nice butthe rubber is to soft and slows you down. me and my friend did a test with a spedometer and they slow you down alot. i would get 1.75 rear 1.85 front. i like maxxis max daddy tires. their weird at first but once they get broken in the are awesome. having a front tire gives you more traction but also more friction to slow you down.

right now im running 2 1.85's and sumtimes one 1.75 in the bac

I run both 1.75 tires on ny bike. I seem to like the ride better .
larryS
I always raced with 1.75's front & rear bitd. The local track was pretty much hard clay. The narrow tire seemed to be quicker & handle better on the hard surfaces.
