I know what a Badd frame is but I got out in late 91' and pretty much walked away from the sport.
So what is a jad?
I have never heard of them.

Another wierdo frame. Basically had no down tube. Just a huge fat single tube for a top tube.

They were actually pretty cool bikes but they were very heavy, they were around from roughly 94'-late 90'ish. Eric "the aquaman" Simmons rode for them.

Wow.....glad I missed that too, I got out in 92-93, never seen anything like that!!! The most interesting things I remember started with the Kastan Uni Blade fork and the Auburn with the removeable rear triangle.....good stuff

I heard about Eric Simons falling into that waterhole jump and getting that nickname! He's a good sport about it. I always call him Aquaman! He's a lot leaner now. Every year Eric's been at the ABA Fallnationals at Del Mar.
I think he's friends with Veltman (who was living in San Diego).
I've known Simmons since 82' or 83'. He was sponsored by Maximum BITD.

I spoke with the guy who made Jad several times.
He was an engineer who wanted to make a strong bike. His son had trouble with bikes buckling under heavy loads delivering newspapers so he set out to build a stronger frame. I don't think he had BMX experience.
He also made an alloy crank that was CNC and hollowed out with a plate that bolted on the back to cover the hole. The interesting part was that he used a spindle like a redline's and the power disc was notched like the crank arm so you didn't need to bolt it to the crank arm. That was a good idea.

i ride a jad freecoaster. it's basically a real deal suntour coasterbrake hub with no spoke flanges pressed into a aluminum shell that's drilled for a 48 spoke wheel. i spoke with the guy on the phone once or twice before i purchased the hub. super super nice dude. i'd love to hang out and chat with him again sometime about his products and ideas.

They made some freaky hubs as well. Huge flanges and oversized industrial hardware. MY LBS has nos JAD hubs, cranks and a frame too. Not my style, I am a slave to the 2x triangle design.

Jesse--your LBS sounds like it has some cool old (er..."mid") stuff in it. How much do they want for those JAD cranks? And if you happen to go in there, could you have them measure the spindle w/calipers? I'd like to throw them on a new school race bike, but I don't know if I could get a euro conversion kit for them. (Of course, if Ian wants them, he was first in line...)
