I would also recommend chatting with Jay Wendt if you have any doubts about the usefulness of a full-face helmet.

I agree with ya. My only gripe is the vision loss and I think they could improve on it. I like the clear front/face guard idea. With the technology today I'm suprised its not already an option..

Boom a little controversy.. And bent weiners..I was kind of surprised NOBODY sides with me.. I agree they are more safe and all that.. I just don't like them.. That's about it I guess..

The only thing I disagree with is the.. I don't do alot of riding.. Hmmmm... I'm actually thinking about cutting back... this year.. Just because I dont' make it to the barn, dosen't mean I don't ride.. For one thing, I don't have the money to drive up and race... So, Hopefully that will change,, someday..

Man, this is the third time I edited this message.. I dont think I do alot of posting either.. hmm,

Thanks for the info Rick. I have the pics for both frames. You can see that they are both the same company & one IS definitely a freestyle frame. As I said, my brother in-laws friend just gave this stuff to him. All he knew was the company was from St. Cloud & not many were made.
Needless to say, I'm VERY jealous.

Woah, I completely missed this discussion! Wow, talk about unique. I knew that ABM had pioneered the adjustable headtube on their earliest MTB's, but that top tube(s) design is really cool, wow!

Humidity saC and I went to SCSU in the late 80's and he worked for American (I think he was the one who actually sold the Beryllium MTB bike), but he never mentioned anything about this. I'll try to get him to post here to see if he knows anything.
humidity saC
WHOA! Now those are REALLY RARE! There is probably about 10-15 of those ever made! And I know there were less than 200 of the BMX race frames ever made. That is amazing that you have one!

Here's my background at ABM: I initially worked for the local bike shop Granite City Schwinn from 1988 - 1992. During that time, the guys at ABM had me build all of their show bikes for Interbike. I Handbuilt all the wheels, and then did a "pro build" on all the completes, etc. After a while of us selling their bikes like the Breezer, Mtn Tandem and the Comp Lite, we (shop) became a little more involved with the company from a design standpoint. I wanted a frame that had a longer top tube than the Comp Lite (their best seller). I had a one-off made for me and it was called the Grande Comp. I still have it in my collection to this day. The guys at ABM saw a market for the bike and went in production on it, but they changed the name of it to ELF. That stood for EXTRA LONG FRONT. Basically a 1" longer top tube with Comp Lite geometry.

One of my good friends was an Engineering student at SCSU while I was there and he worked at ABM as an on-site engineer. Funny to hear I know -but you'd be surprised at how many small bike manufacturers that have NO engineers on staff. So this guy had the idea of doing the Beryllium bike in 1991. I officially started working for ABM in 1991 while still working for the shop too. I was a sales person for them at Interbike that year and yes, was heavily involved with the sale of this historic bike. We sold it to an Arab for $26,000 cash!!! It was an 11 lb Mtn Hardtail for those that have never heard of this bike.

Anyway, back to the BMX stuff. As you know, the headtube angle was adjustable on all these bikes. A good marketing tool, but it worked - not that you needed to change your headtube angle a lot, but it was nice that you had the option (or so we said).

The freestyle frame was more of an experiment than an actual production piece. The owner gave up on the whole BMX/Freestyle part of the business in about 1989 and there was a pile of the race frames sitting in the back room of the "factory" (going nowhere) collecting dust. A lot of the race frames were annodized too. I can only remember one of the freestyle frames that I saw back then and it was the owner's son's so I never had a chance to ride or own one.

It is truly a piece of St. Cloud history.

Who's #148 in the pic?? Looks really familiar...

Full face helmet deal: Ya gots the I can't see through the mouth piece to the don't likes to the...

If you spend a little money on a Motocross helmet, it's worth it. Visor moves up a good deal. When you crash, it will save your "grill". Chics dig it. (This is where MC finds F'd up face with no chiclets pic..)

Since the barn is closed for the holidays, I'll have to put the snow tires on and do some road work before the Condo.

i commented on it but it died. anyhoo this pic is def. early 83 . i will have to dig up the yearend point issue of the aba paper.
in 1984 mcalister went to the grands with fritzmeier, ryan benning and myself. benning got third in 16 novice on a pk.
his bike and himself looked nothing like that in 84.

I say we try and plan a Condo Classic practice night next week some time and open up the barn. There was some talk about having a practice night if anyone is interested.

Russ, it was great talkin with you on the phone. Sorry you talked so much that my cordless phone battery died. (JK) I know that Kraker and I are talking pretty seriously about hitting the Corn Husker National in Nebraska at the end of FEB beginning of MARCH. It would be great to have another to split the costs.

I'm with you on this KoP. I don't like the full face either. I raced with an open faced Echo helmet all through the mid 80s and never lost any teeth. I had a mouthguard but rarely used it.

To the people saying they like the full face rule, does it take the rule to make you wear the full face helmet? It's a preference thing and the rider should be able to choose what he wants to use. What's next? Requiring riders to wear shoulder/chest protectors? Nascar helmet straps? Pillsbury doughboy suits?

The tracks these days are far more safer than they used to be and heck, the track was usually the safest place we rode back then. The hills and ravines behind the Kmarts that we turned into jumps were far more dangerous and helmets were never used.

The full face helmet rule is just more of the sissyfication that has taken over this and all sports these days. :sigh:
Paul Springer
I think we have a match...

Guest200901
To help people understand a little more as to why Rehbein's has this rule, which I am sure it is to mostly keep kids safer. BUT, this place is very tight racing. The outside gate puts you right on the wall, and the last straight through the whoops also puts you in the same spot. I've seen kids go right over the wall into the crowd.

Yes it should be a choice to some extent, but they are also protecting there own liabilities as well

Smitty (Paul) www.retrobmx.com is now an official sponsor of the Condo Classic! Thanks Paul!

I took these pics in Sept. here in SLC during the Dew Tour. Funny thing, I didn't see one person wearing an open face/mouth guard.

Anybody here know or knew a Jerry Kueal (s/p) SoCal Nag racer in 80's & 90's? About 4 years ago while still sporting his old open face took a nasty digger & was jacked up for life. He's not racing anymore & from all the reports I was told, his helmet probebly was the culprit. Another example of people not taking advantage of newer technology is Dale Sr. He refused to wear the Hans device which by alot of expert accounts, probebly would of saved his life.
Fly racing helmets full face is snug right up to your chin so the lack of vision is no excuse.

One more thing, the tracks are WAY KNARLIER than the old "one jump per straight" 80's tracks, gimmie a break!

Finally, some reasoning here. That's all i'm saying.. I don't like them, i'll wear it if I HAVE to. It's not like i'm riding some 12 foot high halfpipe getting 12 feet of air.. I'm just going over bumps. I understand everybody likes they're teeth and stuff. But I never wore a full face except that one time I was there, and it was so weird. You guys that use them, that's smart.. of course. I'm not that smart, and I just wish I could still use the one, i'm been using 20 years.. Just wish it was a choice like it is, at every other track in MN... So props to the full face...

Jerry/KOP/PIPE - You are fast, have skills and are an "old school racer"(I seen it this summer)...suck up the pride and change with the times...and enjoy different sides of the sport, "if it's what you believe in"... do what you are wanting to do and stay with what you want to do best, but please DO NOT basterdize what the rest of the community enjoy's here on this thread (that you started). Stay real...and support what you believe in. Yes, I have not followed this in the past, but I am understanding the "big picture" more everyday...slowly.
B. Apold
Well said Mark and there certainly is a big picture and I've turned on certain things too.

I don't see what the fuss is really. Full faced Bell Moto III's have been around since 1979, so its not surpise that there available for a reason. Remember the big Premier bmx full faced helmet craze??? Everyone had one. The Rondo team had them, etc, so its not a new thing at all. I had a Bell moto III back in 1980 and I hated it, so I was then given a Bell RT (From Rydjor bike shop) in place of it and the open face felt right. Today, I wouldn't recomend an open faced, but to each there own.

Its all good, know lets F'n move on.
