Yes, i'll agree with MC on that one.. I had a long stretch there through the 90's when i'd go to races and I didn't know anybody. It definitly makes it all that much funner to ride and watch people you know out there. So i'm glad some of you guys around my age are back in the game. Makes it all worth while I stuck around.
I'm already getting a little depressed not being able to ride. But this old shot... just has to get you stoked.. Is there a better picture in the history of BMX than this?

Springsteen, I heard something about an injury. What's up with that and how are you doing? Any word from the Big Rig? I sort of got depressed and stopped riding after he disappeared. Hopefully things come around for him. I really liked hanging out with you guys at the barn.
Only three weeks left in the hunting season, so I might have to pull the Mosh out of the rafters after the first of the year.
Kind of a busy time of year for me, so I don't always have time to hit this site. e-mail me if you get a chance.

Sorry about the crooked logo there Mayor McCheese, we got the bench rider chairs at the dollar store.

Faction stuff is always cool to have, there IS the rare stitched seat that is out there somewhere and the spoke cards.

That is an awesome picture, Pipeline. Not sure how someone would do that today with all the clipless pedals in use. Speaking of that, are many old timers using clipless? I'm about to try them on the cruiser since I've used them for years on all my other bikes. It still doesn't feel right using regular pedals.
By the way, I had my first race last Saturday. Out of 5 36+ cruisers I came in, drum roll please, 4th! Yippy, I beat one person. That's one positiion better than I thought I'd do. HA. Spin class here I come.
Ya'll (that's Texan for "you guys") take it easy and I'll see you in January. I hear there's snow up home. Walk softly and carry a big shovel.

Victor, I'd say its about 1/2 and 1/2 on the clips. I don't use them personally, but I can see the gates would benefit awesome. I don't like what clips have made the sport into (IMO) and that's simply a momentum race with not as much pedaling. You know what I'm saying so there's no need to explain.
Also, I think most of the serious injuries are to blame from the rider stuck to the bike in the event. It is certainly not always the case, but from waht I've seen, it makes me pass on them. I did the MTB thing too, so I know what your saying. anyway.

Uh-oh, here we go again?!? Maybe we should open this topic up to the Essers, Hill and the gang, which might lead to the creation of yet another "island" Web site.
Hey y'all (that's Minnesotan for "biatches"), I'll give $100 and a set of Aerospeed cranks to anyone who finds and convinces Theo to attend the Condo. Another $100 and a round-tube JU-6 if he yells "C'mon Driscoll" while pedaling down the first straight.

Viktor, my advice on clipless would be to use flats until you get fully back on your game. Then start practicing with the clips, you start by setting the spings to the fully soft mode and work your way up to a comfort level.
As far as clips vs. flats - it's like Hutch vs. GT, totally preference. Nobody should get worked up about it.

I was riding flats last night at Rehbein's when my 13 year old kid took me out, removing all skin from the left side of my ***. I'm now switching to clips so next time I remove skin from both sides in a symmetrical fashion, thus eliminating the one-legged limp I have today.

At the Brainerd Old School event last summer we invited some of the original track directors from the northern tracks and that was pretty cool. It was a great way to say thanks and they were blown away at how the sport has prospered and carried on while still remaining true to its roots.
I remember a few of the faces from the old North Star days, but you guys would know the names.

There are some benefits to living in Texas:
- Pretty much warm all year. Although it's 47 out now, yesterday it got to about 80!
- Ride my mountain bike and motorcycle year round.
- The local track is having its last race this Saturday. After that it's open 1 day a week for practice. No snow to deal with (then again, no one around here owns a snowmobile).
- Girls forget its cold, don't wear coats and show off their high beams
It would be fun to do some "special" events at the race - just to extend the fun. Relay race, running race, running while carrying the bike race, it's just got to be some kind of RACE!

Good to hear from you Shawn. I'm really looking forward to catching up at the Condo. I saw you on the news a while back - Theo Wirth something or other - and had instant flash backs. I know that Vegas trip was just a blip on your world tour radar, but it was an all-timer for Bermel and I. That 30 mile ride around town on Friday night was the best ever, except for that little incident at the NBL track.

Ya know...at Jack's Minn. races circa 1981, he had a running-around-the-track race, in which the winner got a six-pack of Rondo. That's how "Rondo" Rod Dupree got his nickname, for the two people on this board who might remember him.
We could revive that OS tradition at Condo, using another fine beverage.

Did Steve Speers race in 85? I thought he quit before I did (83). I suppose he could have started up again. Gamehaven was a trip, but I liked it. There is a tree trunk with Ben Richards imprint on it in somewhere on that track... Never saw a rider hit a tree until Ben did.. Holy Cow that must have hurt.

Fun night at the barn last night racing. I got there just in time for the mains. In the old man class it was Jeff Moe, Gary Walton & Lance White. Because they were total points I just got to see there last race and it sure was interesting. Gate dropped and they ran close as a pack, around the first berm Walton squirted out front, for some reason Lance & Jeff got tangled and Moe went down right around the first table at the second straight, sounds familiar for some reason...

I think the reason they require full face helmets is to look out for the best interest and safety of the riders. I believe that if I had an open face helmet on last month when I went down I would have had some face rash, no thank you...
Edit: I REALLY DO APPRECIATE THE BARN AND EVERYTHING THEY DO FOR MN BMX! Without them we would have no BMX for 6 months out of the year.

KoP, you seem to do a lot of pos(t)ing and not a lot of riding. The barn is an icon of MN BMX and I for one am really thankful for a place to ride in the winter. If the helmet rule is the only thing that's keeping you from racing, I kinda question your true spirit.
Here's the other thing. There are more and more old schoolers showing up at the barn either with kids or just checking things out. Some are interested in riding, some not so much. I can totally appreciate not wanting to jump back in to RACING after 10, 20 even 30 years. I don't really care too much about 1984 Hutch frames or being the next 41 and over cruiser national champ, but all of you guys should just make a few laps for fun. It's still the same thrill and if you follow up with it, it's a great way to get back into shape.
As for the racing, if you want to throw down, there are still plenty of guys with good speed and skills, but for the most part, it's way relaxed and just a good time. If nothing else, get your kids involved and just show up to help.
I'm not trying to jack with the old school movement, I'm all for it and it's been really good to see a lot of old faces. I just like to look at it more as appreciating the past but living for today and tomorrow.
Pretty heavy for a sunday afternoon post but the helmet rule comment really bent my weiner.

Full faced helmets are pretty much a needed thing now days. If you don't and you fall face first, let me be the first person to say I told ya so. I don't like the vision loss of a full faced, but the trade off is worth it. I still think someone should make the front out of a clear material for better vision purposes.
I got to see 3 races last night. Moe bit it in the 3rd/main. Made me want to ride after watching, but that's not going to happen now... Maybe in January sometime.
