I had 15 riders in my class. Derby city track was down hill and fast with tight tar berms. I crashed hard saturday trying to take over 1st landed on the tar. Somehow only got minor scrapes and bruises. Very tough competition

Pauli, the Boecker quote makes me laugh too.. Timing is everything...LOL!

Jeff: Where did those black & white newspaper/magazine clippings of the Rondo race come from? I'm #50 on the starting gate in the "Gary Erdman ran the gate" photo, and I've never seen that image before.

Guys, all the photos are great. Manning is Johnny O'!

I promise to learn how to post photos, and will start doing so soon.

KOP: please post your sock-puppet art.
Jeff Manning
Sandberg- I don't know where those clips came from. RL posted them so I'm sure he knows. ( I'm sure that RL is the Jeff you are talking to.)

So your #50 in that pic? I was wondering if your brakes worked being mounted so low on your handle bars. I'm surprised you didn't try mounting them on you forks. It would have saved a few inches in cable!! HaHa

I wish I was Johnny O', that guy had tons of style.

Anyone miss the wood ramps, waterholes, large rocks and uphills?

John Sandberg
Anyone remember what they were doing on the weekends back in 1980? This might jog your memory. (And now I have officially entered the 21st century by posting images on this site...thanks for the help JT.)
Guest200901
Most likely running around being yelled at by Jack, because things weren't setup yet. Or putting trophies together until the weee hours of the morning....
John Sandberg
The hat and plaque that Gary Erdman gave me at my 57th birthday party earlier this summer. Thanks Gary!

John Sandberg
Calvin and Dave Christensen, from Cal's first ever race (and Dave's first race in 22 years).

Man, I'm getting the hang of the photo-posting stuff. I think (still not sure about sizing).

B. Apold
Sweet picture!!!!!

Another FMF...LOL!! FMF24's are the official 24" bike of the OS MN bmx gang. There must be 6 of those things on any given track.. LOL!!!

Great pics John, keep'm coming. Got any of you killing Ted and myself? hahahahaaa

No pix of us, sorry.

But I do have these images of Tim Krone kicking my butt (and Doug Tessman's). The first is a mudder at Shorewood, the second after the downhill at Cannon Falls.

Paul Springer
Awesome stuff, keep em coming Sandburglar...

Jeff Manning
Cool pics Q-Tip!

Those Bj's riders were so fast, they could even beat the Rondo guys.

Anyone know where little Timmy Krone is these days? He was one of my favorite riders on the team, but he was such a quite guy. Or maybe I was the quite guy, I can't remember now, that was many brain cells ago..

FMF,, what are those even.... So new bike? Not sure I dig them. Free Agent and GHP,, seem to be the best.... Tell me baby...

John, great pics of Tim Krone. Again, he was always on the money. Great rider, nice guy.
B. Apold
KOP, the FMF is the best bang for the buck more a NS 24" (IMO). They handle real well. I changed mine up quite a bit and got rid of all the black crap (rims, hubs, bars, etc. and stuck on the silver rims w/ GT hubs and bars and of course skin walls... Every bike needs skin walls..

Great pictures John. Keep them coming.

Tim Krone was an awesome racer and friend. I really do plan to track him down sometime in the next few months.

Among his many endearing qualities was the fact that he often raced in his Levi's cords, seen here (he's #10, Doug Tessman is #6) in their full splendor at Richfield 1981. Surely a Howie photo.

Actually, what I dig most about this pic is the four-deep spectators trackside.

I'm not sure if Howie shot this of me at the Rondo Classic, but I dig it.
mikkopeters
That is a rad pic!!!

Shaun Noble was another fast 1981 era BJ's rider that I didnt see around after 81 much. Did Krone leave in early '82? I wonder if Tim Krone and Shaun Noble ever had races together. Noble was in my age bracket generally. John Sandberg and I share only 2 months of common age class so, not too many races did I ever have with John Sandberg or Tim Krone.

Also, back in 5th is Scott Boecker regaining his slipped pedal. Eden Prairie 1981. 13x class

Hmmm, this Shorewood shot is almost too much for me to believe. When Ted Carl posted this I almost thought I was hallucinating. This picture is the exact moment I fractured my forearm. 1981 1st race of the year. What a way to start!?

I love the tabletop pic John. Youre a great ambassador for MN BMX. Here's a classic highlite of the MN BMX scene...

this is a shot of Conley and Shawn Sheely (in Rare GT sponsorship colors) from 1981 Eden Prairie...I like the pretty clouds.
Jeff Manning
John- Its funny you mention Levis.

I remember one time (at Richfield) Jack D. was announcing my cousin Dougs race. It went something like. " And out front in moto #50 we have Doug Carlson, sponsered by none other than Team Satellite (Outhouse) and Levi Strauss, do your sponser proud Doug." I remember laughing the rest of the day because of that. Guess you had to be there. What am I thinking, there were hundreds of people there that day..HaHa

Sean, I remember that accident like it was yesterday. I think I was on the starting hill when you crashed that day. I was like "ewwwww, that's gonna sting", and then the reality of a broken arm. I was like, no way! I think you laid there for quite a while until paramedics got to you???? Is that waht I remember correctly?

John, Great shot of you kick'n butt. You always had nice holeshots, as did Tim K. You 2 were sure fun to race.

Sean, Ya Noble was another great rider. Very tall for 13-14 whatever he was in that pix

I am in that crash photo too standing up on the berm in a white redline jersey. Its amazing how we have all crossed paths before and we meet again years later brought together by BMX. How cool is that!
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
Sean, can you help me out with who's who in the EP photo.

What age & class is that crash photo? Are you the one getting drilled by the guy in red?

BTW, if you look close, I think Springer threw something on the track to cause the carnage.

Shawn Noble was a great guy/racer. daRedelsberger still has occasional contact with him. Krone was a couple months older than me, so he wouldn't have raced Noble.

I think Krone hung up his leathers, er, Levis, early in the '82 season.

This photo cracks me up, because after every moto at every race, Jack forced us drink Rondo like this, then do the "cheers" arm extension. At least that's how I remember it.
Paul Springer

If you squint you can see the Rondo can I threw at Miland. Thats how I took out Rod Byrnes too...
B. Apold
WBL, I think Sean would have just turned 13 in that crash photo. Sean had an April BD...sean correct?, so the crash was at the beginning of the season.
B. Apold
John, Did you train with Dave and Steve allot? If you did, what fun that must have been. You could have learned so much from Dave.
I trained with Sean Miland, Shan Lynde, Rob Tracy, John Tribbet and Boecker riding the streets of Austin ditch'n bike patrols.... LOL!!!! Man, what an awesome way to spend Summer's racing bmx.

Shawn Sheely brought his dad down to check out the Theodore Wirth trails last night. We're putting together a gnarly new section that's very BMX/Freeride oriented.

B. Apold
Hahaaa, where's your headlights? Looks like fun.

Pauli and I sadly haven't made the Elk River MTB trails this year. Pauli, we gotta go.
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
I just noticed in the Rondo can salute that Troy Lembke doesnt have a big BW(Bill Walters leathers) logo on his thigh?? Maybe he pulled it off for lighter rotating mass on the leg? Maybe plans to put a big IZOD croc there?
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
Is the Schwinn rider in the crash photo Ted Carl? If not, I think I may know him. This pre-dates my time in BMX, but the friend who got me into racing would have been in that class in '81 (13x right?).

John, that Rondo photo is classic.
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
Rondo salute photo - John's hair doesn't quite match the others either.
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
I believe the Schwinn rider is Mark(or maybe his bro' Jeff?) Karsten-a friend/team mate of Ted Carl's. I see him in alot of my 81 photos but I never knew who he was.

I didnt socialize much at races-too busy perfecting my starting line gunfighter stare...

here's another "Karsten containing" photo circa '81. I think this is the old Brooklyn Park track.

It wasn't as dark in there as the pic makes it look, but it was right around sundown. That turn has been changed already since last week.

The thing I like best about the new section is that it's exactly like what we built our trails on as kids. Piles of concrete and asphalt dumped there by the city many years ago. A big pile of asphalt can make a great two person starting hill. On Sunday I'm going to go to the old Cedar Lake mounds and do a Public Service Announcement video with a friend. Those trails were great for BMX and MTB until the concerned citizens of the area wanted no more bikes back there. I suppose the trails still being there is better than them being buldozed.
King of Pipeline
You, it was almost impossible not to get into BMX back in those days.. It looks so fun and cool. I remember being excited the night before and never being disappointed..
I hope that feeling is still there for the young these days..
B. Apold
I think it was Jeff Karstens #5. Mark is the #21 guy above. Nice guys. They came over to Ted's house when I was there a few years ago..
B. Apold
KOP, most kids today are afraid they'll get there bikes dirty. I was a clean freak with my bike, but I never hesitaded to go for a dusty and dirty ride if it meant huge fun. I spent lots of time cleaning it up though.
John Sandberg
Brad: Nope, never really trained with Dave or daRedelsperger. My riding gang included Mike Anderson, Boecker, Steve Pint and sometimes with Doug Carlson. Later on with a guy named Pete Rainey.

All Bloomington kids.

Until I was 14, I never formally trained. Just rode my bike all day, everyday. And played other sports like hockey and skiing. At 14 or so, I started lifting weights and having a more formal training program.

No coincidence that the more formal/disciplined the training got, that the fun started to seep out of BMX for me... At 15 doing wind-sprints until I puked...that's when it felt like a job instead of a fun sport.

Another Richfield photo...I must have been anticipating a flood.
steef
Or wading out into the lake beyond the track.
B. Apold
Your forks look bent too... Wasn't that a Hutch though? I remember Boecker's Hutch haiving the chopper appearance as well.

John, Its sounds like we did the samething. I rode ALL day, everyday. Track, street, barn stalls at the fair grounds, the 100 building ramp, down the halls of my High School, down the halls of the Oak Park Mall. When Rydjor Bike shop was at the Sterling Shopping Center they stored the indoor wood ramps there and we even rode in there....Very small though and that didn't last long... I think once I turned 15 I hit the bleachers because some pro was doing them and that helped forsure. I sprinted everywhere, so that wasn't new. Ya, once I was 16 and that Summer of 83 past it was just never the same. I tried to look past it, but it wasn't working. I still raced fine, but it wasn't mentally there and it became a struggle.

I don't mean to ramble, but today I have some bmx memories on my mind. I remember racing allot Winter 82/83 down at the State Fair Grounds in Des Moines. It wasn't real big, but it was fast and fun. I scored many-o-early season points that Winter. There wasn't to many MN's there, but I remember John, Troy (of course), Sean, Burger, Dave C. etc. Iowa had tons of riders my age, so the rider points were a great addition to a 1-2-3 place for anyone my age... anyway.

Anyone know who was in front of me here? I think it was in practice if my memory serves me.. It was the NBA/Schwinn event at MTKA. At age 11-12 I was really smal. The guy in front couldn't have been in my class... LOL!

John,

Awesome pictures!!!

On the Rondo tabletop you did looks like you'll land flat bottom with those light graphites??

Wish I could have attended more races the drive from Duluth got old really quick!

The Gary Erdman/Sandberg shot I believe was from Mini-cycle/BMX Action.

Oh, Carolyn got her bandages off, the tendon laceration is healing well, pins still hurt, and now has a two finger splint which has helped her to move the rest of her fingers.
mikkopeters
MAN! Give Carolyn our best! She going to make it on Saturday?
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
John, we need more!

Looks like your sponsor was trying to get an extra year out of those leathers. At least you didn't pull an Apold and pull your sock up over your pants. Little nerd.
