Mark, no those top 2 pics are from Dez Moines State Fair Ground events. They started those in early 82, until late 83.

If your refering to the "Corn Husker Nationals in NE, then yes I think that was.... But wasn't NE indoor dirt the first years?? I can't think!

It never dawned on me they were MN-2. Maybe I knew it then, but I don't remember. I just figured if you had a 612 area code that you were MN-1 and that's all the metro was back then (612). Either way, they were good consistant riders with love for the sport.

Shawn, you know your Metro-geographics waaaaaaay better than me....I'm sure your right.

Yep, the Hawkey Nats was a dark venue - not the one I'm think of though. I may not know for sure until I dig through my trophies - it was a bright place, right downtown.

I think 612 covered a lot of territory back then, maybe even St. Cloud. The split was geographic, the river. I think Minneapolis and it's suburbs in 612 were MN-1. But I'm not sure, it changed often.

1983/84 I think Ronken tried to go USBA - but there were too many non-prof ABA tracks, and it never stuck. USBA was a rebel group of ABA employees - they offered more money to the promoter (less fees). It failed as fast as it came along. Frank Richards ran some NBL races at Roy Wilkens that year too, everyone was out to make a buck.

There was a lot of friction the year that Ronken tried to do USBA - it got kind of ugly. I don't think he was making as much money on the deal as Jack did before he sold Midwest to Ronken. I think the sanctioning wars were part of the reason why BMX waned all across the country. In 1982 I put all my effort into ABA races (Dave C. too) - but the press and the sponsors were hitting NBL, you never knew where you should be racing until after you'd been there - it could get pretty frustrating trying to keep up with it.

I wish it would have all been one sanction back then. NBL would have probably been the best for everyone - 3 motos, not for profit, everyone get's there monies worth.

Oh! I remember hitting that pole really hard and having a pretty spectacular crash - thanks to a little IA love tap going into the first turn.

If I remember right - Rob, Troy, Berger and I carpooled to that race in my Granada.

Tremco was around 80-81-ish, then Rondo 81-82-ish, then tahoe 82-83 and I think Jack sold them around that time.. I'm not exact, but I'm close

USBA, that's it!!! I think we had this discussion before about when things started to get greedy, so to speak. I also remember you saying I picked a primo time to quit. Interesting info Shawn.
Ya, the NBL vs ABA (LMAO), I don't think much has changed there. I remember certain events and I thought certain great class riders would be there and NOPE! they went to the NBL national, or wherever they went.
I liked NBL better too Shawn. I think the ALL 3 motos were good and could make for a different out come for riders... good and bad. The transfer system ABA was cool unless it came down to the wire. Now the ABA runs 2 motos...Atleast at the Nationals I've been too. Kinda wild

The first 2 pictures are definitely Des Moines Indoor.. I remember that race because it was the first time I raced Mark Driscoll in my open class... " He had me at GOOD BYE!"

MC- the 3rd picture with Sandblaster in it was the second jump at the Uni-Dome in Iowa on that rubber surface..Good time...... good3.gif

At first I thought it was the Armory too, but it's not. The Armory didn't have 2 levels above the track. They both have the stage at the far end though. Compare the color pic of Sandberg to the B&W & you'll see. I could be wrong, but I raced at the Armory every winter for those 8 years. I grew up in Muscatine not far from Rock Island. After we couldn't get the Armory anymore, we raced at another indoor place right off 80 but I can't remember the name. That would be 85'?

BTW- we have been getting snow in Oakland/SF the last few days. Elevation? 2-300 feet ohmy.gif

You are correct! Note the back wall. Funny, I don't remember the B-Ball court being there.

[/img]

BTW (my gloating time...) The Uni-Dome was my 1st pro race that I won.

We're gonna have to get a bigger band-width on this thread now though, cuz my head is enlarging now that I start thinking of my road to fameless MNBMX history. Of course, 90% of you were still wearing diapers, squeezin' pimples and wondering what that funny feeling was when you woke up in the morning during that time.

Guest200901
My bad. This was the one I thought was the Corn Husker or some NE race.

On a side note: WE ALL have so much to be thankful for. Howie and now Dan Quigley (and others) have completely brought back all these old memories for a lot of us.

THANK YOU!

Ya think? tongue.gif ya, the Quad Cities had allot of events (Rock Island, Bettendorf, Davenport and Moline). Some of THE longest trips ever (OMG). Basically a two lane road all the way to Iowa City (I-80) then it wasn't bad, but I know one trip took almost 8 hours 1 way (phug'n snow). Jeff was that with you??

We do have allot to be thankful for....all these memories, but like most.... "ITS NEVER ENOUGH" tongue.gif I have been blocked from all 83 photographs minus the shot KOP got of me. WTH? There's a tear in my diet MTN dew. (sniff) smile.gif

Mark, gloating about getting 1st in Pro isn't gloating....its just plain awesome! Right before I quit I thought about turning pro.....Lembke laff'd his arse off....LOL! Ya, probably not a good thing to do, but I was getting to the end of the ametuer line... shoooot!

I must have left at the right time too. I remember the NBL track that opened in 1982 that lasted like two weekends. I paid my membership fee and that was it. It's funny for me now since I live in a predominently NBL area. I have raced the NBL National circuit for the past 5 years and have enjoyed racing and meeting new people. I always looked to the ABA for my roots.
B. Apold
So what happend to the "NBA"? It was the first real sanction, we all saw the cool prism NBA decals on Stu's plate..... MN started off as NBA, then it was like gone!!! NBL was around in 79-80ish, then pooooof! ABA central.

NBA and NBL were very simular.

I found this old shot of Sandblaster. After Tahoe and GHP, Rondo came out with "Diet Rondo" and John was the premier rider... smile.gif

The history being displayed is just amazing - Quigs, you've done a great job of documenting this obscure little culture over many years. Thank you.

And Gary, what a great run you had - definitely bridged more generations of MN bmx'rs than anyone (except maybe Dougie C.)

I hope Scott is faster than the last time I saw him about 15 years ago.... He was chasing me back then... Seeing all these people back into it is giving me the BMX itch! The old timer class. Not sure about your age.

20" 36-40, or 41 over- novice, Int, Expert. It was 36 over and this will be new in 09

24" 36-40 cruiser or 41-45.

Shawn, I was part of the last of the 70's, all of the 80's (when I was on Sheeleys wheels) and there was 456 motos at the Grandnationals in Oklahoma, and part of the 90's, it definitely changed from my first race to my last race. We'll, maybe not my last race...

I was hoping to see myself in some of these pics, but no luck. I'm going to have to go through my old stuff. I'm sure I have some Quad Cities, Waterloo, Cedar Rapids, etc. pics. I hope I still have the Rondo pics too. I do remember taking pics of my first "traveling" race with everyone from Kar City.

I really appreciate you guys driving this MN thread. It's great to see this old stuff I NEVER would imagined having laid eyes on again. When you guys came south to race, I had no ides it was possible at the time to go so fast. You guys elevated our scene & made it a blast to race hard.

B. Apold
Fly'n Iowa'n,

The sport started out pretty early in the stages considering where we lived (geographically). Once it hit the surrounding states we were established as a big bmx state. I mean look at the size of this thread and the first and second threads we started are in cyberspace. I don't remember when Iowa and Wisc had there first tracks, probably 78-79?? anyone?

I enjoyed racing Iowa more, probably because I basically lived on the Iowa border and made more trips to your state. IMO, there were more fast guys than MN had. At some point, Iowa rider count took off, because some of those dbl and triple pointers were HUGE events.... Crazy time!
