Wheels goes like this:

What are you talking about? Troy has the Fonz thing going - looks tough in that Now uni.

I'm just messing around here Shawn. Still bitter about them old days? I tell you now you never had a chance. I have two kids and it is near impossible to take a pee sometimes. If you thought for one minute you could control this group of rowdies for more than 30 seconds, then it makes sense that you were frustrated all the time. If we only had Ritalin BITD.

I don't recall the story as you put it. I trust it to be true but really don't remember any of this at all. I remember the uniform design and thought it was the bomb. We looked great considering we were using Blue. It worked though.

Troy's hair looks more like the beloved Illinois Guv. than the Fonz.

Certainly I was poking fun at myself in my post. I look like a punk.

It reminds me of the time I visited the World Tallest Building

Mercado: I remember that Quigs brought you to the races, but I didn't realize it started so early and lasted so many years. Or that you traveled to SO MANY other states.

Nor did I realize that Quigs shot pix of it all. Literally, of it ALL!

I've said it before (I think on page 36 of this thread), that I drank WAY TOO MUCH Rondo back in the day, lit way too many farts in hotel rooms, dropped too many room service plates down the gap in the elevator door, borrowed more than my share of hotel room towels, wore the same helmet through too many crashes and went to one too many Loverboy concerts with Sheely to remember what happened on a daily basis 27 years ago.

Welcome, Gary. It's good to have you here.

You kinda' past the torch on to me... I was the new king of MN when you guys left and had some success during my 15 year stint... Two ABA action covers and one BMX Plus magazine. Boecker came back during the time that I was still racing and he had to bow to me!

I didn't think you were poking at me, just wasn't sure what you were saying - it was a bit cryptic.

No bitterness, just recalling the story the way I remember - no regrets either. Think about the family lives of most everyone on that gate, and you realize that BMX is what made them keep going despite it all. As a team manager I was trying to create opportunities for deserving riders, but it was a hard job - it was like being a parent, but with guys my same age - and I took a lot of abuse (to a point anyway) for doing something positive.

Not bitter, I'm pretty proud of what I did there at Now - like I said, a moment in time.

They looked alot like the white/blue BJ's uni's.... Which one came first? I'm foggy....

I think that was the year BJ's went Blue and white too, coincidence. Now jerseys were always dark blue, you'll notice Mike V. and Robin are wearing the old JT pants, Mike still has the all blue helmet. We had some slick Vans that were opposite on each foot (blue/wht/blu and wht/blu/wht) that came later.

Hey guys, it's been a while since I've been on here. Also, been a while since I've been on the track, the last time I raced with some of you guys was the Minnesota National 08'. Anyway, Gary & Butterfield..great to see you guys are on here. Gary, if you ever get the chance...look me up or give me a call.

I remember this very clearly. It happened right next to me!!!

I've been weight training pretty consistant since around Sept. Since I don't ride as much I finally feel strong enough to do it. My crash at the barn last October left my arm/hand ache'n all Winter/Spring and didn't fully heal until I laid off the bmx bike for a period of time... feels good again. Now I'm afraid to hurt it again. damn old age sucks! No, really though, I'll get back into it after NY's a little and have fun with it again.. No more trying to race Strehlo.
Tom Erickson
I pop in here every once in a while just see if the topic shifts. Great to see Rob and Gary on here and I'm still waiting to see Lemke join. Haven't you all been trying to get him on here for two years or more?

Mark, you are right that I started the first Minnesota thread back in 2003 on Vintage. I was shocked that the thread went to like 5 pages in two days. What's funny is as I read the posts I feel that my fabulous years of racing in Minnesota BITD were very short compared to most of you. The Quigley photos showed me that I only saw 25% of what was really out there.

I race a lot more now than I did back then. Love seeing the photos. Are there any more coming?

Mark, thanks for posting the 84' - 85' era. I found this picture of myself on there. I have many photos myself of other people I'd have to look for from back then. I love this photo, hope to be on the track a little bit in 09' That would be cool.

Yes. Local Insurance salesman Steve Redelsberger introduced me to road and track cycling in 1992. I race mostly road but hit the track (velodrome) a couple times each year for big races. If you race on the road and you are ok at it, the track is a snap. I raced from 1992-2000 on the road and track and in 2003 and 2004 I made a brief come back and raced track only. Sprint only. I did nothing longer than 2 laps for 2 years. The track is 250 Meters.

Did he sell you insurance too? laugh.gif

WHat was your home track?

I still travel all over racing road. Pretty much stick to Hellyer San Jose for track. Ever been?

Thought of some more Iowans- Who could forget Hans Nissen?

Cully Todd from IL- still racing road/CX/Mtb I believe. See him on the Midwest blogs. Very fast BITD.

Thanks Mike - glad to see some pics of you in there.

Troy, I know you're checking in - I think I was too hard on you in my Now post, sorry. Your persona was huge, and you were a handsome guy. I probably felt intimidated by your manliness back in the day.

Springer and Hot Carl - you're lucky another BMX dad showed up! Actually, it went really well. The Park Board approved the new park - so it goes to the City Council. But the big contingency is that there must be a committee of volunteers to oversee the project in order for it to move forward.

I'll post up more info later, I've got to go check the latest Quigley photos.

Yes, love the track. I love big concrete tracks. Indy, T-Town, Colo Springs. Kenosha, Northbrook, Frisco, and Houston are the others I have been to. I am from San Jose. East of Downtown near Alum Rock Park. I moved to MN in 1980. Made my first summit of Mt. Hamilton in 1995 on my road bike. Epic ride.

Hans was in Miland's class, but your right he was fast, great jumper and just a natural. He came on "later" in the first gen scene, but didn't he go on to do some National damage after 84??

All these 84-86 pics are so cool. I don't know a sole and they could be from another state for all I know.... Still some wild shots. That indoor Shakopee/concrete track was a bit tight huh?? Eeek!

And maybe Butterbuddy can tell us what his address was, because he also a Metro rider. I'm not sure where the cutoff was. Also, on the year end 83 results, Gary Walton in the top 10 mix too and he's from Northern MN. Somehow I didn't realize all this then.

I had no idea you were from CA. We have a point to point race up & over Hamilton and into Livermore CA every Memorial day weekend. Last year the Protour teams were blown away by that stage in the T.O.CA.

Still big as a house I see. Sweet gold kit too
I do mostly endurance events, partner with Dirk Copeland for the Madisons. I'll ocassionally jump into a Keirin locally. BMX served me well, but those 200+lbs guys don't move out of the way so well at speed. Terry Tennette also races sprints at Hellyer on occasion.

I'm thinking Iowa? Kind of looks like a place I raced once in 1979 - 1980 - Lincoln, NE.

Does anyone remember a race in Des Moines, indoor race in the winter or spring of 1980? It kind of looked like this building, but newer - a bit more modern. It may have been an ABA race, but it wasn't the National.

Mention you talked with me. Terry and I had great time at the Olympic Training Center in early 2003. The man is as funny as he is ripped. Not to mention strong, fast and... what else hmmm. Oh, ripped.

I took images of his abs for my mother. She loves a nice 8 pack but did not bless her son with a set.

Dirk Copeland? I guess you would be hard pressed to find a better Madison partner. What a machine.

Moving on.

The Richards lived smack in the middle of Ramsey Hill. Less than a mile from downtown.

I lived on the East Side and would ride over the day before races. Spend the night with those animals and Theo and Colby and whomever happened to be stopping by for breakfast. Which was HUGE! The Richards ate more food in the morning than a small country. Punkie never cleaned her Iron skillet. Rather she used the previos days grease to cook the eggs, bacon, ham, sausage and tofu.

Tofu?

Just checking to see if you were paying attention.

Brad, I'm pretty sure the Mississippi was the break between MN-1 and MN-2.

Mark, those buildings are different - The Des Moines race I'm thinking of was in a big building like that, right downtown - but more modern with a square ceiling. I think it's where they played basketball. Not the same place as the Hawkeye national if I remember correctly.

All I remember about that race was racing Driscol in the trophy dash or open - trying to remember the race.

Ya, the Dez Moinez Civic Center (Hawkey National) was downtown and it was square, good call Shawn. I also remember the lightning being very dim, so dim I didn't see the 13 novice rider main coming across the finish line and being ran over before my main. LMAO, I couldn't remember my name let alone race, but I did....Dead last baby! I was in severe pain.

Anyway, I'm not entirely sure I remember that place Mark. It just looks like so many other VW Beetle style roof tops.. tongue.gif

Off the topic, but what was the sanction in 85 or after? It changed and then died very quick (USABMX) or something like that. I talked to Boecker about it sometime ago.

It never dawned on me they were MN-2. Maybe I knew it then, but I don't remember. I just figured if you had a 612 area code that you were MN-1 and that's all the metro was back then (612). Either way, they were good consistant riders with love for the sport.

Shawn, you know your Metro-geographics waaaaaaay better than me....I'm sure your right.
