A little unrelated but this is Brett Bermel, Sheely and myself loading up the rental Caddy enroute from the Union Plaza to the track in Vegas for the 1983 Gold Cup finals. I've told this story before, but the three of us rode something like 30 miles roundtrip the night before the finals to an NBL track on the outskirts of town. Shawn blew out his knee racing and was pretty much on reserve for the rest of the weekend. I made it through 1/8s and 1/4s but missed the last transfer out of semis to some Kuwahara guy named Gary Ellis.
I had never raced a national and on the first afternoon, we were cruisin' around on the old strip when Brent and Brian Patterson came smokin' by us around a corner. I thought I had just seen second coming.
Click to view attachmentWow! Never thought I'd see pics from that weekend, cool Gary.
Yep, I led you guys on a wild goose chase to that NBL race - one of my biggest regrets ... I had been running pro practice on that friday, and I was flying ... Post and Stu were the only one's to beat me to the first corner all weekend, and I was seriously considering turning pro for the race - but Chuck Robinson didn't want me to turn yet. I've never been faster... ever, or ever again.
But then that Friday night.. the Gold Cup track was in a baseball stadium, really flat - so I was running 41/16 and the NBL track had this huge downhill start, which had me completely spun out by the second jump. I was pedaling over it when I slipped a pedal, planted my foot and hyper extended my left knee. I was sore as heck the rest of the weekend, but still made my mains for cruiser and open, I was leading my semi for 17x when some dude crashed on me in the first turn, landing his bar on my thigh and taking me down. I got up and made it back to a tight finish, almost making the 4th spot. There was a lot of bumping and pushing that weekend, lot's of 16x guys just moving up - hungry for wins with very little National experience. I almost got in a fist-fight with a guy at the finish line in the quarters, should have turned pro.
So, I was getting ready for my cruiser main when I look down at my bike and see that my cranks are cracked ... I quickly swap out the cranks from my 20", but alas - the chainwheel doesn't line up. Turn the cranks once and the chain just rolls right off. No way to adjust it as my dad had made a custom redline spindle for me which fit the 20" perfectly .. so with my Cruiser main lining up in staging I scramble for a bike, the only one I can find is Steve Redelspergers. Now if you've ever made a lap on one of Berger's bikes, the first thing you'd say is WTF Steve! How do you ride this thing?
Low wide bars, big gear - and goofy geometry. I get on the gate in the nick of time with Steve's bike and we were off. I got a terrible start but pulled even with DD Leone at the first turn, although I was on the outside .. I go into a big slide as Poulson, Charlie Brackens and another rider swoop to the inside ... I get back on the gas, pass two guys in the next turn, then pass Poulson on the second straight like he was standing still ... then slide again in turn three (that damn bike) but on Poulson gets by .. I pass Poulson again on the third straight, moving into second place behind DD, not enough room to catch him, so I settle in for second - and just rail the last berm at speed ... when all of a sudden Charllie Brackens does the deep inside dive last-ditch effort - as he squares off-of me he takes us both down, Poulson tangles with us as well and we have a big pile 20 feet from the finish. I get up and drag Steve's bike across the line for 3rd or 4th. I'm completely dejected.
The result, after a brutal weekend of bar-banging, a blown knee, and a sponsor who won't approve my move to pro - and a season of crashes while leading Nationals, 4 years of struggling to make my mark .. I quit racing BMX seriously. That was my last real race. I've always been fascinated by the irony, I finally reach my physical and mental peak, I have a sponsor who is making me his #1 guy... and my heart gives out. I know in my heart that I've finally made it .. but I don't have the will to do it anymore.
The knee gave me problems through the years, I didn't get it fixed until I started racing downhill in my late 20's - torn cartilage was the problem, and easy fix.
That's my story. Gary, if you have more pics I'd love to see them.
