Just messing with you old timer. No need to settle anything. You beat me fair and square and destroyed my reputation in the process. I hope you are happy now.

Moving on.

Like wise... I mean no harm. I'm sure if you page back you can read: "by no means did I ever think I was faster than you".... Maybe that race, for that moment, and its how I remembered it. That was about my peek and I retired not long after that race.

MN rider on Grands TV coverage (and an ugly crash on the pro section) http://tinyurl.com/6g27qu

That crash on the pro jump was Denzel Stein and he broke at least one wrist (heard it could have been two).

Missed you guys at the barn last night. A new hot shot team was trying to dominate the track last night so it was up to Boecker and I to set those Midwest Mulisha guys straight. biggrin.gif Moe looks good in the new colors.

Boecker almost had us jumping the quad last night. He just needed to pony up the medical deductible and then maybe he would have had some takers. Quote of the night (Boecker) "you mean a girls just double-doubled the quad. I can't let a girl out jump me." Good times last night Scott.

Scary news about the Lindsay family on their return trip home from the Grands. While stopped on the side of the freeway, their fifth wheel travel trailer & truck was hit by a semi. Sounds like nobody was hurt, but just before they were hit, the family was in the trailer (the part that is now missing). Don't know all the details, but I'm glad the whole family is okay.

They're okay. Nobody was hurt in the accident. Very lucky. I guess the truck driver was weaving from shoulder-to-shoulder prior to hitting the Lindsay's rig. Must have been a sleepy driver.

So, I just found this cool site - ton's of old BMX mags scanned and posted online. I pulled down a BMX action from Sept. of 84 - just perusing when I come across this little snip from a Vegas race.

Arguably, Minnesota's most successful and dominate racer, Willie Huebner.

I'm wondering if the last sentence might be an inside jab by the guys at BMXA.

Sorry about the confusion about the Sting. My bad.

Still. for those of us over 6' tall, Schwinn did not make a bike for us until the mid-90's. The Pro Modified is what I speak of. Even Sheely pulled a copy cat and raced one. I say that since Wheels and I raced such different bikes when we were young. We could not ride each others bikes very well.

Even so, his Pro Modified differed significantly. And again, I could not ride it properly as he set it up.

I am curious about the nylons and skirt Mr. Ted Carl. Could it be a lycra premonition?

My memory lapses here. Why would I do such a thing? And since this is pre-full body hair, I likely looked better than the girls that were hanging around with Bergermaister. I was told I had nice legs by several men in my life.

Troy Lembke???

He loved my legs.

Was I working the skirt to get Marv jealous?

MN-1 isn't labled (see left column) MN-2 right side. End 83 season. Okay, not sure why its not coming out full sized, but you can see the readable size on DSMITH's thread.

After building an OS bike I realized just how short they were. I raced a GT pro (18.5" top tube) and it was my frame of choice. Little me racing the same frame as Andy Patterson or Hill or Nelson Chanady for that matter is hard to imagine, even now. I was 5ft 3" tall at age 16 (ya I know), so once I sat on my OS GT "Last Winter" it felt right (now 5ft 8") and I could ride just like I did at age 16 for the most part.....then I brought it to Rehbein's and there was no way I could ride it then... Ya, the tracks have changed and so have the bikes. It was a little discouraging. Those of you who have tried to ride an OS bike know what I'm talking about.
Mr Ted Carl brought his New school Schwinn Sting to rehbein's last Fall and it was then I realized I was much better suited to race 20" vs 24" and once I rode a current production bike it made all the difference. I found the Ultrabox GT and that was it.

When I talked to Troy he asked were he could find an OS 24" bike and I had to school a bit about what changed.. It was fun to talk to him about whats new and how its changed..

Ya, those bermless tracks are great. I'm not going down the OS vs NS again, but it wouldn't such a bad thing to change things up a little again. Apparently Brad was paying attention in class when I was schooling him bitd, HA!. laugh.gif Indeed, Buttonbritches, SX-2000 until mid 1982, when Schwinn gave me a Sting. Until then I was too poor to buy one.

Since there are some people here now that really don't know what went on in the "Old Thread", we should probably show 'em.

For starters, there was a Sand Castle thread topic, where we determined that Sand Blaster, had more options for nicks than just about anyone, and we named them all.

But, ....that was before Mrs. Butterworth was here. Now, Sand Bagger may have some slippery competition, and this time he's not on the receiving end of the Butterstick.

So, Here we go!

I'll start with Butterfinger, Butterbritches, Butternutz, Batterfilled, and Mrs Butterworth. sarcastic.gif

Never saw that picture of John....that's funny! Him with the Hutch duds is the other shot I like...Cool stuff!!!

Yes Ted, the 2 times I raced you in 81, if I remember you schooled me. tongue.gif. I don't think we ever raced each other again after that.. Sad! I missed out on allot of cool metro races stuck in SO-MN.

Ted, I don't think you ever made it to Austin/Albert Lea or Owatonna did you?? Just curious, cuz I only ever remember being in your class at SW and of course Civic races and I think we had a semi race at one of the first Civic races.

Schwinn Sting: Before the CYC ames I was looking at buying a Sting bike, just like th one you bought recently (post it), and I couldn't get use to the tall head tube and it felt to big. I was 12yrs old and pretty small, so then went to Rydjor and bought the Mini-Goose bike they had (lay away), and I think it was about a week later the CYC ames came in (complete bike 218.00) and I knew that was it, atleast until I started to grow, which in bmx terms never really happend. Eeeeek! Then I graduated and grew 5"

Mark or John,

In that photo of John in the Hutch duds, was that the Waterloo track, last sweeper??? I remember it having a jump in the middle but not a drop (so to speak). What year is this?

Here's what I've got from Shakopee. I mainly remember they were some of the first overnight trips with my then highschool sweetie (and still my wife), as well as finally getting some 612 respect and rocking the Sheely's Wheels jersey. I also have a crystal clear vision of the huge staging area and guys break-dancing on cardboard.

As you can see from the bandana, I (52)was a big Loverboy fan. Still not as cool as Boecker's Members Only jacket. Or is that a NYPD cadet jacket? I hope my kid holds on to the same type of memories from the Barn.

A little unrelated but this is Brett Bermel, Sheely and myself loading up the rental Caddy enroute from the Union Plaza to the track in Vegas for the 1983 Gold Cup finals. I've told this story before, but the three of us rode something like 30 miles roundtrip the night before the finals to an NBL track on the outskirts of town. Shawn blew out his knee racing and was pretty much on reserve for the rest of the weekend. I made it through 1/8s and 1/4s but missed the last transfer out of semis to some Kuwahara guy named Gary Ellis.

I had never raced a national and on the first afternoon, we were cruisin' around on the old strip when Brent and Brian Patterson came smokin' by us around a corner. I thought I had just seen second coming.

BA, I graduated in 1984. I raced a little in '82, a lot in '83 and then off and on from 84 thru today.

I did move to Cali and worked for BMX Plus! in 1987 and got to race a lot then. You guys were talking about Harry Leary a few days ago. I raced a lot at the Azusa track in SoCal and got to be pretty good friends with Harry and Matt Hadan. There was never a pro class, so they would ride with the 17 & Over Experts. Also rode a couple times a week on the downhill fire roads around Pasadena and infamous U trails at Palmdale. Good Times.

The current Vintage Big Boss, Mike Carruth was also an editor at Plus! at the time.

I recall a place refered to the "U" trail's. I didn't ride allot during my time on LA or southern CA, but I think I know what your talking about. Interesting about BMX plus though. I never made it out past the foothills area to visit Azuza etc.. I was a magnet to the beach and went there every chance I got, which about every other day/night. Topanga, SMB, Malibu, then down further to Laguna/new Port... great times, lots of volleyball and beer. It was a no worry time.

Agree Rick... It looks like Butter's stance on the bike and if this is 1984 then it was Butter because he finished 11 (MN-2)... gotta be him

I must admit, seeing what happend after I quit is really fun and refreshing to look at. Damn!

Wow! Never thought I'd see pics from that weekend, cool Gary.

Yep, I led you guys on a wild goose chase to that NBL race - one of my biggest regrets ... I had been running pro practice on that friday, and I was flying ... Post and Stu were the only one's to beat me to the first corner all weekend, and I was seriously considering turning pro for the race - but Chuck Robinson didn't want me to turn yet. I've never been faster... ever, or ever again.

But then that Friday night.. the Gold Cup track was in a baseball stadium, really flat - so I was running 41/16 and the NBL track had this huge downhill start, which had me completely spun out by the second jump. I was pedaling over it when I slipped a pedal, planted my foot and hyper extended my left knee. I was sore as heck the rest of the weekend, but still made my mains for cruiser and open, I was leading my semi for 17x when some dude crashed on me in the first turn, landing his bar on my thigh and taking me down. I got up and made it back to a tight finish, almost making the 4th spot. There was a lot of bumping and pushing that weekend, lot's of 16x guys just moving up - hungry for wins with very little National experience. I almost got in a fist-fight with a guy at the finish line in the quarters, should have turned pro.

So, I was getting ready for my cruiser main when I look down at my bike and see that my cranks are cracked ... I quickly swap out the cranks from my 20", but alas - the chainwheel doesn't line up. Turn the cranks once and the chain just rolls right off. No way to adjust it as my dad had made a custom redline spindle for me which fit the 20" perfectly .. so with my Cruiser main lining up in staging I scramble for a bike, the only one I can find is Steve Redelspergers. Now if you've ever made a lap on one of Berger's bikes, the first thing you'd say is WTF Steve! How do you ride this thing?

Low wide bars, big gear - and goofy geometry. I get on the gate in the nick of time with Steve's bike and we were off. I got a terrible start but pulled even with DD Leone at the first turn, although I was on the outside .. I go into a big slide as Poulson, Charlie Brackens and another rider swoop to the inside ... I get back on the gas, pass two guys in the next turn, then pass Poulson on the second straight like he was standing still ... then slide again in turn three (that damn bike) but on Poulson gets by .. I pass Poulson again on the third straight, moving into second place behind DD, not enough room to catch him, so I settle in for second - and just rail the last berm at speed ... when all of a sudden Charllie Brackens does the deep inside dive last-ditch effort - as he squares off-of me he takes us both down, Poulson tangles with us as well and we have a big pile 20 feet from the finish. I get up and drag Steve's bike across the line for 3rd or 4th. I'm completely dejected.

The result, after a brutal weekend of bar-banging, a blown knee, and a sponsor who won't approve my move to pro - and a season of crashes while leading Nationals, 4 years of struggling to make my mark .. I quit racing BMX seriously. That was my last real race. I've always been fascinated by the irony, I finally reach my physical and mental peak, I have a sponsor who is making me his #1 guy... and my heart gives out. I know in my heart that I've finally made it .. but I don't have the will to do it anymore.

The knee gave me problems through the years, I didn't get it fixed until I started racing downhill in my late 20's - torn cartilage was the problem, and easy fix.

That's my story. Gary, if you have more pics I'd love to see them.

Shawn, Good story. I know the feeling while having the abilites, but the hearts not there anymore. Its better to burn out than to.....well you know the rest. tongue.gif

As I've stated before, Sean Miland and I kinda quit about the sametime, I think the sameday in fact although Sean tried it again a few more times ( Sean I never knew that until recent). I had to talk myself out of going to the next race just to see how it felt....Wow! no pressure, this feels wonderful. The next weekend I remember going to a high school dance watching a friends band play and I had such a great time dancing, chicks, whatever. It was nice to let go...

I started Sheely's Wheels a month later - never trained again. I was having so much fun with the shop, racing just didn't seem like a good way to spend my time.

I had a couple of good results over the next couple of years anyway - winning the state championships in '84 for 17x and cruiser, and a 4th at the World Cup in '85. We all have regrets I guess, mine was not racing just one more year.
