that would have been awesome.

of course if it was a crash fest that would explain finishing ahead of you guys. lol

butterbars, man you were ahead of the times. that could have went somewhere. did voris dixon make those for you guys?
i too always thought if was rob butterfield products.

chucky, a gate in the gym?! man who did he have pull with?

in the gym? wow! and I had to risk riding down senior hall.

I was actually racing up and down the halls at school (black marks on the floor......yes!) and there's 3 of us, and I'm like at full throttle, and I hear running foot steps... and I turn around and there's the janitor running after me...
He wanted me, because the other two (Rob Tracy and someone else) split off and it was me and him.... Just when I think I've made it to the doors I hear another set of running sounds....GOD!! there's two of them, I pulled away came to the door, hit the door lever at full throttle still flying and I'm like yessssssssss!!!! then I hear, "Apold your yass is mine". Great, all that for nothing. Of course I get home and Mom's already got the phone call. Next day I'm in the Principals office and he's asking me to give up the other two names in exchange for a lighter sentence.... So I did. LMAO!!!!!
I had to clean windows for a month, and it lasted one day. The next week, I was back riding in there again, only this time my Dad saw me ride into the school... He waited for me to come out....OH MAN, your kidding me, DAD?. My Dad says "what the hell are you doing?" "you need to buy a car because this isn't working!!!! HAAAAHAAHAHAAA

i think everyone must have done that. (ride the halls). i too rode mine a few times. never got cought though.

When South MN got its own circuit of tracks it split the state up and that was part of the "end" for us- I know the metro area had its' onw race series battles between Jack and others like Shorewood too. Mankato was a good 1/2 spot for the Mn1/Mn2 guys to duke it out on Wednesday nights. I now know how much I missed feeling like I was racing bigtime hotshoes. One person can only dive under Brad Moonshot Apold so many times before the fun factor dims. And running a track can burn parents out as well. I wish we could have all hit the nationals together in a big SE racing type bus. Marv as bus chaperone....Ruben Kincaid with horns.

Ohhh here we go "Mr. Riverside" tongue.gif

Ruben Kincaid and Danny Partridge.....wait a minute!

You are right though about the spliting of the state kind hosed things for us "class wise" I rarely raced guys all my actual age locally. Keep in mind I would have only raced John 2 months out of the Summer, Ted a couple months in the Winter. I think Krone was close to me birthday wise. Having John, Ted and Tim as rivals, I only raced them 2-3 times a year at the most. Kinda sad when you think about that. Iowa was just closer. IMO, there was more guys like John, Ted and Tim in Iowa/WI so it wasn't like I had knowone to race, trust me. Iowa seem to draw allot of outta staters.

9 Hours later....Tulsa! Man, talk about non-stop talking and catching up on LIFE!!!

A few boring photos of the trip down....I'm sure once DC starts running the halls of the hotel and breaking into linen closets, better photos may surfice...

BTW---It's great to see this thread moving forward again with some history and stories being added with Rob coming on board and Kast posting more, as well as everyone else having memories jogged with the past stories some of us have not heard .

Today was a HUGE reminder of things I and Dave had forgotten about. I mean HUGE!

NOTE TO SANDBERG - We listened to that tape we had sent you from AZ 26 yrs ago, I kid you not, DC and I had tears in our eyes we were laughing so hard....

PLEASE NOTE----NO WAY IS THIS TAPE BEING MADE PUBLIC.

I'm realizing more and more everyday, that even though we all share the same passion for the stuff BITD, that there is still a generation gap in such a small time frame. My time ended like many of you around the same time, but there are MANY more who went beyond 82-83. That is awesome, because I personally left it behind at that point, and really have known nothing about it since.

There are so many people that have popped in, and said HEY!, and left. At one time I kept a list, and need to dig it up again. Since I started it, many more have stopped by said Hi, and never seen again.

Come back please. Rob chiming in really has made me think about this. It's like it almost needs to be passed on from the really OLD schoolers to the "Beyond 82 Olds Schoolers"

This is about Minnesota BMX from day one, until NOW. There are soooo many years of stories and photos missing in action yet. It seems that stories and photos are still missing from 1983 and on.

I'm just saying, after a day like today, that even if life was great while we were racing BITD, and life was good or bad in between then and now, we all share a common interest. Minnesota BMX.

Peace out...DC now snores at age 45 I guess (not as bad as Springer though), and is disrupting my awake-late night Me time tongue.gif

Good luck to the BMXer's in Tulsa. What a blast that looks like. Let's see some big trophies.

DC's second moto was unreal! He was haulin' the mail...and took the 1st spot hands down! BUT, during the 1/4's the mail truck slid out in the 2nd corner and missed moving on.

Great job though Dave!

WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
DC, you looked really fast in both motos. Great job making it to the 1/4's. Good luck during the grands this weekend.

Was an off day for DC, didn't qualify today, but has another shot in the morning with the 3rd motos. Calvin had a great second moto! He got 2nd, but they only took one. So both DC & CC have tomorrow to pull it off.

DC had a PACKED class out of all six 41-45 motos

I did get to meet our VBMX Fearless leader though. Fantastic guy with a HUGE drive and big heart to unite all BMXer's!

THis had an UGLY Outcome! Walked away though.....

Good job to all the MN riders... I watched most of the races Sunday and it was tough. I heard one rider from MN in the semi's and I think he made the main (not sure who), but the announcer was making fun of Minne-soooooota... I don't know anyone that talks that way.

Anyway, that 36-40 cruiser class was really fun to watch. Archi almost had it man. The 41-45 class also very stacked.

Mark, I think with air like that on those guys above were pro's. I didn't see any ame's getting that kind of air. tongue.gif

It was very exciting and extremely competitive, the Minnesota racers represented very well. In the big kids group Dan Wenisch got secong in 28-35 Inter, great job! Some other stand outs:

Jackson Newbauer 1st in 11 Inter
Tommy Glidden 1st in 10 Inter
Jamie Glarner 7th in 12 Inter
Calvin Christensen made the 1/4 Semi's
Katie Juvland made the 1/4 semi's on cruiser

Jackson Newbauer looked really good in his race. Aubrey Freeman placed 4th in a very tough 13 girls class. It seemed like all the MN riders had to come from outside gates like Jackson & Aubrey. Way to go guys.

I was pulling for Dave Archibald to win so an old guy would hold the National #1 cruiser title. He had the lead until Shawn DePrete blew by him on the second straight. 36-40 & 41-45 cruiser mains should be vet pro cruiser.

Ya, Archi had it going in and coming out of the first corner, but lost his momentum a little holding that line. It looked like he had to dive down and then suffered a tad. DeP had that momentum and made it look easy. That was the best race to watch IMO. Doesn't Archi turn 41 this year or soon? He's had a great run the past 5 years.

Who else went down but didn't main it? DUG's kids? Strehlo? Rixen?? Moe/momma??? Kinda out of it on the barn gossip.

On a side not, did you see those killer FMF duds? Those are (IMO) the only uniforms that really stand out and say "hey, I race for FMF" and there's no questioning who the riders are. All the other uni's, all the riders look the same. I hate todays uni's. GHP's are pretty cool. I like watching the pro's and I can't tell one from the other (just Mike Day).

I checked into Archi's age and he should be 40 at next years ABA Grands so still in the 36-40 Cruiser Class.

Yup. They will have 41 and over Novice, Intermediate, and Expert. I am updating my 20" already and racing a few more ABA Races so I don't have a huge number. I was MI-01#34 last season. I recommend that all you Old Schoolers build up a 20" for the Nationals next season! Should be fun. I love racing cruiser but I still feel better on a 20".

Minnesota should be proud of those riders that made the mains. Some of these riders are well known in the NBL too.

Ohh, I'm way ahead of you on racing 20". Heeeheeheee... Actually I bought an Ultrabox 20" last April for my daughter to ride around. She didn't like it and I brought it to Rehbein's and haven't touched my 24" since. Love it! Cool, on the 41 over classes. I think that was over due. Those 36yr old riders are still crazy fast.

Wow what a trip! Mark Conley, Calvin & I had a wonderful time! M.C. jogged my memory on so so many fun times we had as kids running around the country to different BMX races. Sand we were laughing so hard we both had tears running from the circa: 1982 “John Sandberg Phat” interview cassette tape. As for the 2z camp racing results ~ null and void. Young Cal made quarters, but didn’t transfer. Dad didn’t even get out of the motos! Until next year, back to the underground training facility. TNX for all support from cheering crowed in MN!

That is extremely cool you guys went down there. I wish I could have went.. I didn't have shizz going on.... But there is no way i'll be getting on a 20 bikes again.. I actually thought about it awhile ago, but it's like riding a pit bike for me.. Even my cruiser seems small these days.. I may switch to the 26 inch pretty soon..
