I noticed Butterfield in MN2, is that because his address was at Marvin's???

I finished #13 MN2 1982, so based on that info, I think that's year end results or close.

Rick, you have the 83 year end don't you??? post those if you do.

What a perfect way to remember names. Man I forgot so many names its just insane!

yes i do , i will dig that issue up, scan it and send it to someone/whoever wants to post it.

Scott, plate is yours! P/U at barn 11/15 @ race.

Dave,

You have any more pics of us racing BITD? I would love to see some of those. Great racing in Disney by the way. I spoke with Ken Nork who was behind your rear wheel a lot.

Good luck at the Grands if you're going.

Pro Point Standings. A few MN boys in there I see

Dave C. sitting at #9

This was 1982. I turned Pro and Dave C missed the main for the overall #9 in Pro. I finished #188 in the Pro class Wahoo!!!!!! That was a nice post Mark!!!

I guess I didn't congradulate Jeff Either. Congrated Jeff, you definetly earned it that season!!!

Thanks for the Congratulations John..Your right I never ran that plate. Like in NASCAR I kept my old #..J/K happy.gif

I guess you could say I quit..Kinda..Burnt out and banged up was the deal.

I don't think Sandberg remembers this but, he called me quite a few time the summer of 83' to come out and challenge this new "Hotshoe" named Rob Butternuts, or something like that. So, to humor him I showed up at one of my favorite tracks (Richfield) one weekend to race..It was a blast!! good2.gif

I was just mess'n with-cha homey. I was actually heart broken when you quit. It was pure dis-belief because of course you were so on the top of your game and so close to a Factory ride. IMO, the only reason you didn't get Factory ride is because your class was so huge there wasn't a place for you on a team. There was only "X" amount of teams and 40 great riders in your class. You had by far the toughest class. Had you raced the 83 season you would have been A-pro ready.

Hi Dave,

Its nice to see you back racing again... I remember when you came to Rhode Island I believe it was either 1980 or '81 and raced at our NEBA Ocean State Classic... Most everybody that was following the War Of The Stars series those two summers came thru RI and race our big race.

My buddy from BITD has a bunch of pictures of you from that race.

Mike

Mike, nice to hear an east coast accent here on this thread. Do you still live out East? I would love to see any photo’s if your buddy would be willing to email out or post? Would appreciate. Yes, my son started about a year ago and next thing you know it’s in my blood. Not the same as 25 years ago, it has taken a long time to get back in the mix. My son and I are traveling to the Grands with Mark Conley for old time memories. Just making the main would be a victory for this rust bucket. Let me know if photos develop, thanks for the post! Tom, yes I have a few vintage photos. I’m waiting for a down day to start scanning. My mother put together a collection of photos and a ton of moto postings etc. from circa: 1978 to 1983. Maybe this winter I’ll get the time to get them posted. I met Ken in FL, nice guy! We both a little work to do, those guys are way fast…….. Maybe next year we can meet up at a National/Regional race? I see your name in some of the race standings – still at it! D.C. ~ 2z

I think it would be awesome to go to the grands as a father/son racing package.

I'd go and race too, but Jeremy is not old enough to drive us both back home yet. laugh.gif

For the record, who's driving you home after the big crash over the 32 foot chasm first berm jump Dave? ...Oh yeah, MC. Never mind. No worries. sarcastic.gif

Good luck to all!

Psycho, you got your ears on? It's the Pro Racer from the BBQ....
psycho
Yep sure is. Most pro stars are pieced together so to find an all og one is amazing. I've been scolded numerous times for not buying this bike that day. I knew it then i know it now. It's like finding a profile or a mongoose pro class with all the parts they offered that year. Those 3 bikes listed out at $600 bitd. Pro stars are cool but would'nt hold a candle to an all og complete profile w/all profile parts.
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
I remember seeing that bike at the 2007 BBQ. He's done a pretty good job of cleaning it up.

B_APOLD who? What is all this then?

Timmy Judge pulled me out. Great shots from 1979. Really took me for a ride. Love that guy. Really the only BMX racer who had that hero impact on me. Well, besides Sheely, Berger and Lembke of course but none of the locals could jump like the Judge. Did you ever see Da Berger jump??? Makes me smile even today.

STAY ON THE GROUND BERGER!

I did not see this thread B_APOLD, sorry.

You guys are nuts. These threads goes back years.

Did I mention Tony Ashford? No? Good. He goes in the hated racing against thread. The guy had a half a bike on you after the first pedal. Sandberg? Christianson? Fast gate starters? Not like this nut. I was not slow like Lembke out of the gate but it was not my strength. I was very conservative out of the gate. There is plenty to read and 20 minutes before I pick up kids from school. So I am going to see just what you Minnesota Old Schoolers have been up to.

Welcome Rob!!!!

Is that picture old? everyone seems to be looking at the goofball with the cycle'n helmet. tongue.gif j/k I can't believe they let you run with that.

That looks to be March, 1996. The Schwinn pic is from 1997 Land o Lakes.

The helmet? The was no rule. I raced from the front. And I got lucky. I would not do the same thing today.

I was just raz'n ya about the helmet. Hey as much as I love open faced helmets, you just can't run them today... Right you are! 96 vs 08 tracks....08's are brutal by comparison.

Rob, any plans to make it out this Winter at all? the past 2 months for me have been really hard getting out to ride... man!

Good to have you aboard... I'm in the mood for some old Troy stories I may have forgot....or wanted to forget! Heeeheeeee.... I wish he'd come around (Troy) BMX just isn't bmx with out him playing air guitar with a 36" x 24" x 4" tune box, sing'n "Break'n da Law".

LMAO, I remember asking Marvin (83) if he likes any of Troy's music (Marv's voice) "Well, I like Jewdes Priest"..... Oh the fun we had and sometimes not so much... never dull, it was never dull.
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
nice to see ya here Rob/Bob....the historical grid is filling in. Oh yeah Troy will be on here eventually....Marv too. Rob, I bet if you had run alloy 3 piece cranks back in the day you'd of snapped 'em all clean off.
King of Pipeline
I've been running the same helmet for 23 years.. Open face.. I'm always the only one.. I'm not running full until they make me.. Which I hope is no time soon..
Paul Springer
Welcome Mr Butterfield, I have heard a lot of great BMX stories that had your name included in them. I look forward to your contribution to the thread. Got any cool pics?
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
Great to have you join in Rob. Looking forward to hearing your stories from the early days. If your interested in seeing some of the guys, Friday night practice at Rehbein's is pretty low key and there's usually a pretty good turnout of old school riders. The guys that don't race, like Brad, will usually show up for practice on a Friday night.
butterfield
Marv is alive?

Amazing.

Troy is still alive?

Amazing.

Amazing they did not kill each other. Oh yeah, I have some stories about them two.

Marv, for some reason, did not take a shinning to me. Perhaps it was due to the fact that I was 3 years younger, skinnny and Troy's main rival wherever we traveled together. Which was not really fair since I was so much younger than Troy. The real truth was likely my big mouth, weird hair and ability to win BMX races wherever I went.

MARV

I was forced to lay down in the back of Marv's VW pick up truck ALL THE WAY TO OKLAHOMA in 1982 where Marv proptly stole my race bike when we arrived at the Hotel. My bike and Sean's bike disapeared BEFORE we entered the Hotel.

I then tried to race Mike Vangens bike. My good friend Nathan B. had a Patterson all set up and ready to race (we were the same height) but he was worried I would hurt his bike. Prick was not even racing 20" at the time. I made it to the Semi final on Vangens weird [please review the site FAQs] bike where Darrel Young helped me to the ground in the first corner. Troy finished 4th in 17 over X. By far his biggest result. Troy was flying and god knows if he had a good start (NEVER DID) he could have won that race.

Not much from Troy after that.

I have no intention of racing BMX. I am considering the Fri practice for fun. The main problem is BMX is not nice to those who have no fitness. Plus, I have not been on the little bikes since 1997. Truth is, BMX gets harder every decade. The jumps are insane. I am old and frail now.

At 42, with kids, the head injury would likely help.

butterfield
I don't quite get the three piece alloy crank comment. I always ran Profile BMX cranks. One year I used the Redline flights but mostly Profile. Are alloy cranks now the rage? I see ya'll be clipped in.

As you can see from the image on my last post, I was clipped in in 1996. I could not race with clips at that time, so I used flats for racing. I raced 5 races in 96 and 2 races in 97 (Land o Lakes) and 1 race in 98 that I lost to a guy on a mountain bike (Wheels).

So the last BMX race I did in 1998, I lost, which proves once again that you cant win them all.

Or can you?

King of Pipeline
1 - Are those your pink chit kickers? Yes, pink boots..

2 - Whats those framed photos of? Family photos..

3 - Does Baxter live upstairs and you in the basement? Baxter goes upstairs any chance he gets. It's cold up there .. just used for storage.

Butterfield. I raced down in the Mankato, Roch, Austin area... You had great style and had great bike control.. I remember you most in Mankato. There was a big race, and ou just smoking everbody. I got a great pic of you leading the race and will post it soon...

ok,Rob Thighfield, the comment on alloy 3 piece cranks was describing your insane leg power...One of the most memorable Shorewood memories is of you falling on the gate and being the whole first straight behind and then still winning. I thik it was a bit muddy that day? I think everyone could here the threads in the thighs area of the Levis you were wearing ripping(aka HULK style) as you pedaled down the straight after the crew. And yeah-I saw that pic of you with the other 2 guys in the Saturn promo photo.... what can I say? superhuman genetics?
