What a great weekend, I am so wiped out and would not trade a thing. We raced Fri, Sat & Sunday. Sunday was sooooo long but it is clearly one of THE best days for the sport. The whole BMX community gets together to spend a great day together. The weather was flawless and Mark Post and his group did an awesome job at Pineview BMX. The racing was tougher than ever but that is the way the state final is suppose to be. It was great seeing Sheely & Russ, hopefully Russ will be back on his bike soon. Thank you to everyone for a super time!
One a side note there was some discussion of Rehbeins opening the first weekend in October.

Wow, what a fun weekend. The weather was perfect and the company was even better. The ATR camp was the place to be all weekend long. If it wasn't the OSer's hanging out, it was all the 12-14 year old boys trying to get to know the girls. Good thing Brody Cater was there to run them off.
The hit of the weekend was the big BBQ spread put on by Paul & Mark to celebrate a great year of racing. Thanks Mark for bringing together such a great group of families. We had a blast hanging out at the track and the hotel this weekend.
Congrats to all the State Champions this year. DC and Moe took home the honors for the OS ATR riders. Way to go Jeff on a hard fought win in the 41-45 main on Sunday.
Racing went really well this weekend. I came up one round short of a perfect weekend. Congrats to Lance on a good run in the main and the State Champion plate in our class.

Congrats to everyone who raced or made the races/culture happen. DC, you FINALLY get a #1 plate that you can race with...it's been a long time coming.
Dave won the the NBA #1 plate in Minn the last year of NBA. We switched to ABA during the Fall, so he was robbed of the chance to race with the much-deserved #1. Dave, you'll always be #2z AND #1 in my book!

I missed having the honor of running #2z (big shoes to fill) the year NBA went away, instead it was #60... blah.
For the record, it was Keith Abramson (sp) that ran #1z the year that Dave was #2z, he only raced a few races that year (1981?) before he retired for good.

Nobody seems to remember the "E" (NBL?) - but if you look in the background of one of the earlier pics you'll see me running 19z- 14 Novice green NBA plate (order of sign-up year) - the number I earned that year was indeed 7z (15x after Rondo Classic), 3z NBA / 10 ABA? (16x) the next I think, then #2 ABA, and #1 NBL (17x), and then #1 (ABA Cruiser) and #7 ABA (18x).

I can clear up just a little of the NBA confusion, but none of the intoxication.
At the end of the 1978 season in NBA, Dave was also #2. The guy who won was some slouch by the name of Tim Judge. Most people on this site have never heard of Tim Judge, but he later moved to Florida and had okay results in the years that followed.
At the end of 1979 in NBA, Keith Abrahamson was #1, Dave 2, Mark 8, Shawn 7, Jeff 114, Doug Carlson was 51, daRedeslperger was 85. My guess is that any number larger than around 40 was the result of what place in line you were for registering with the NBA. Clearly Jeff was lazy about getting registered in time for the Rondo Classic, but at least he showed.
The last year we raced NBA was 1980. At the end of the season, Dave won the points, I'm pretty sure I was 2nd, Shawn was 3 and daRedelsperger....was dry-humping Robin Housely.
I'm a curmudgeon. I prefer the old days, when there was just one #1 in each state. I understand why the organizations divided up the states and had overall points for each district. But like I say, I'm a curmudgeon.
And as long as I'm at it...I think it's BS how professional motocrossers use the same numbers every year (Ricky #4, Reed #22, Bubba #259 uh, er, #7, etc...). Give me the 1970s and 80s, when the guy who won overall for Supercross or Nationals wore the #1 plate.

I love these pix for so many reasons.
The top one because daBerger is being....so....daBerger. He's going to vere off the track and onto the last straight, where he will undoubtedly find me and tell me about how great the Campy parts are on the JMC that he just about folded on the first jump. Also great in the top pic: the rider on daBerger's right...looks like he's going to eat it.
I love the bottom pic because Mark is pure style, Dave is pure business, Vangen is purely influenced by daBerger's style and the guy in fourth is purely pissed he showed up for his first ever BMX race and had to face these studs.
Also, both pictures confirm that Mark had more cool bikes in one race season than most of us had in our careers.

John, I forgot about the Tim Judge thing - do you remember the story? He was living here in '78 right?
I have to agree about having the #1 thing (or at least the points averaging) a bit more sorted out. I think the first year it started going downhill was the year the Ralphs chased down points (1981?), that's when it became obvious that it didn't matter any more. I think they should average your best races, but as Paul Cater pointed out yesterday - then people would just fly to the easy points races - like a couple of factory Felt riders did this year at the Land 'o Lakes Nat.
I don't know the solution - but I do have to say that the way the plates are awarded now allow you to display your age ranking, which gives all the kids something to shoot for that's attainable. There was a lot of competition for those plates over the last few months, and some happy faces yesterday when the plates were handed out. Hard work rewarded.
I agree 100% on the moto/supercross thing. Robin, oh Robin...

Got my ABA card today, #62 ...
Mark, I need to get you some info on Maple Plain. I have some pics to scan, and some timeline stuff to do. I guess I should do the copywrite thing, but I have so many pics that were given to me I feel bad about putting my name and copyright on things - I guess Howie would have been the biggest contributor to my collection. I'll have to check in with him and somehow sort them out...
Dave, thanks for breaking open "The Book" - can't wait to see more from your archives. It's amazing to think of how much things changed in such a short period of time, from no sanction, to NBL, to NBA, to ABA, to NBL, then USBA and back to ABA - all in the matter of 5 years. Seems like such a short time now that we're older.
Mark, how are you proposing to do the timeline thing? Maybe it would make sense to do it as a Flash thing with a timeline like some of the History Channel features. I could set up a system that takes a name, date, etc and lays it out on a timeline - then links to all info for that entry/time period. It would be a bit of work, but I have the skills and code base - just need to find the time...
Geno and I have been kicking around the idea of a Minnesota Bicycle Hall of Fame - it would likely be housed at his shop downtown. I'm thinking that they'll soon be expanding and taking over the second floor, we could get the MN BMX library started in the new space - I'd like to find a home for a lot of my old stuff, magazines, programs, and such.
On the Hall of Fame issue, we would nominate for Road, Track, MTB, and BMX as well as categories for Shops, track directors, and other industry luminaries from Minnesota (Greg LeMonde is an obvious one).
