I also think freestyle bmx would be great for spectator/TV. Its crazy what those guys can do. Most of the modern world actually recognizes freestyle before BMX anyway. So this bmx will be new for allot of people. It'll be neat though, because the best of the best will be there and the track looks monumental. IMO, the US should be a gold forsure. The way I see it, if your #1 somewhere in this sport you'd be in the US competing and everyone would already know you.... right? We'll see. All 3 US guys are dead even as far as abilites. Mike Day has the individual times but doesn't do as well in a group from what I gather.

Kevin Jackson will be holding down the fort over at the Schwinn camp along with Poulson. No problems there.
I'm just worried about team Robinson without Woods and Clark. Atherton is always chasing those women, like that chick from Torker (Kathy Hannah).. Gives him weak legs for the mains.

John, if you hit "reply" in the bottom of the message window you want to quote, you should see this tag "[quote name='John Sandberg' date='Aug 15 2008, 01:26 AM' post='589870']" before the quoted message in your reply, weird that you're not seeing it when you click reply.
You must be clicking the reply at the bottom of the page and putting in your own [quote] tags?

“No disrespect to racing or the Olympics, but BMX freestyle’s aspirations have never directly been to be in the Olympics. It is a great platform to celebrate sport in a way that unites the world, but we created BMX freestyle to do our own thing, express our own definition of sport, and to have the freedom to express this how we pleased; not to have our opinions sanctioned by a higher power. As a sport we are very happy with where we are at and the freedom we have. We see the Olympics as an opportunity to share this with the world, not change.”
- Mat Hoffman, Hoffman Bikes
I love that BMX racing will be in the Olympics and I think it’s going to have a hugely positive affect on the freestyle side of the sport. I’m having a party at my house on race day and all my friends are coming over to watch. Go Mike Day, and Go Scott Erwood!
If you ask me, I think you guys should have sent someone over to China to cover the race. I also think you guys should cover BMX racing in the magazine again. BMX racing rules again. ”

How was the cruiser action in Mankato today???
We ended up with 1 class of 6riders. It was some 16 year old named Mitch Johnson, Dan Wenicsh, Lance, My neighbor Chad (just started this year, racing my old Free Agent), the guy that races Kato with the mountian bike, now on a brand new Intense, and Me. I wish Chris Austin was there as he would have broke it up into two classes
We did a 3 moto transfer. Mitch qualified on the first one.
The second moto it was Dan Wenicsh followed by Lance. I was working my butt off trying to get past Lance and qualify.I got ahead of him out on the first straight. He passed me on the inside of the first turn, and I battled him down the second straight and passed him in the second, then I got squirley on the rythem section and had to shut it down.
Third moto I took first followed by Chad.
The main was pretty interesting. Dan got a horrible gate and bumped into Chad. Chad claims Dan started throwing elbows as those two were right next to each other all the way until Chad ran him off the track when Dan's elbows made him squirrly on the second straight. Dan got in Chads face by the finish line saying he ruined his chance, as he could have gotten second or third. They were so far back it was pointless.
So Mitch blew Lance and I away in the main. Going into turn one, Lance went high, I went low. Not trying to, I rubbed the inside of Lances rear tire for about 5 feet. Intense Micros make a lot of noise when rubbing together. I was thinking "Oh great, if I get ahead of him, he is going to return the favor in a not so nice way" I was never able to catch him and got third. At the finish line I said, "sorry for getting all up on your tire in turn one". His responce was "oh, that was you?" Nothing too exciting.
I got video of the main, but it is pretty low quality. I will try to post it. Did you see Lances Blog from this weekend? WOW

I had a fun weekend of racing. It started with a relaxing race Friday night in Mankato. Small turnout, but we had a visitor from Florida join us. Very cool guy. He travels with the MX circuit as a medic/trainer, and takes his bike with him so he can race when he has time.
Saturday's two race marathon started at 10 am and didn't finish till after 11 pm. Had the privilege of traveling with Rod on this one. Faribault had a low turnout but the group that showed up made for some fun racing. Once again, we had a new guy from the past show up, this time on his old Patterson. It was fun hearing his story and seeing his excitement for racing again.
With hardware in hand, Rod & I saddled up the Volvo for the journey to Glencoe. We had the "mad texter" Conley and the Moore's in tow. The fun part of two races in one day is hanging out with a good group of people. The not so fun part was the long drawn out race in Glencoe. We didn't start the mains till 9:30 pm.
Glencoe definitely has a cool location in town and a different layout than any other track. Racing in the dark was interesting. It was a free-for-all on the track before the mains and there was a lot of loose dirt all over. I don't know what Lance was saying when he said he never saw Dan Wenisch, because I was right behind Dan when he made the dive under Lance. He cut him a hugh break by getting on the brakes and not running him off the berm. Thinking they might get together, I adjusted my line and the front tire washed out.
Rod had a great battle going on with Bruce Arvold. After swapping spots in the first two motos of their total points race, they continued to swap positions all the way through the main with Bruce edging out Rod at the line. Shawn looked as smooth as ever and raced to the win on his 26" custom racer.
It was great talking to Shawn and Dan Wenisch. I didn’t realize Dan goes way back to the early 80’s. Rick, you might be right about GHP/Penn Cycle deal. He started when he was 10 and never really stopped. I’ll have to ask him next weekend.

Nice pics Mark of Glencoe Mark!
Great to hang out with you guys again, I had a blast - although I would have preferred we would have had a combined class to make things more interesting for everyone. I know, the rules - but they should just combine us old dudes when there's only three in a class. Never happen though.
Racing on Saturday night under the lights reminded me of Maple Plain BITD - and so did the track. Although the Glencoe track has some definite design flaws, it's a fun track - and easy to get to from the cities, a straight shot down 212, it's under an hour if you have the pedal down. I'll definitely be going back, I had a good time and left the race feeling a bit re-energized about racing.
The track reminds me of the old school tracks in that the berms are pretty much useless - you end up just using the very end of the berm. The fastest line was always to the inside. Too bad about the design, they simply have a small lot that forced them to pack too much into the build - the jumps are too close to the turn and the berms are in the wrong places as a result. Still, I like the track and the crew running it.
As for the racing, I was impressed with the competition in the under 40 cruiser - I'll stay out of the majority of the debate, but I will say that Dan W. was a gentleman in turn two. If he had been following Lance's latest position on things Lance may have gone over the berm. Dan hit the brakes instead and slid out (similar to Lance's brake slide on Kraker the previous week).
Dan Wenisch (sp) and his older brother raced in the early to mid-80's, they are cousins to the Foster's ? Their families were pretty involved in 1985 or so. Brian Foster I think (John?), he was the one that rode for Penn/GHP. Dan is a class act, always competitive, and as you can see - has some style. He's been racing on and off for years.
As of today, I'm planning on racing St. Cloud this weekend - see if I can throw a wrench in those final points races

That's Jason Koski's crash in moto 2 Saturday morning. He said he wasn't trying to jump that double heading into turn 2, but had too much speed. His rear tire must have caught the lip on the second hump, and his hand came of the bars. He was just ahead of me and when he crashed his bike bounced right in my path. I had no time to brake, but did manage to unclip without thinking about it. Looks like I can dance after all.
Jason landed on his left hip and smacked the back of his helmet on the berm. We helped him over to the shade for some rest and to make sure he was ok.

With the dry summer, there were no bugs. I don't remember seeing them around the lights either. Maybe it was the smell from all the racers.
