Iv'e got alot of respect for Dougie. After our "get together" we talked & he & I are from the same school of "Don't ***** about contact" & if your on the recieving end, you just come back the next race & get over on the guy that got over on you originally. That's what Doug did to me in the 2nd moto & got me in the main.
I think it was around 99' Russ came out & we raced & after some hard throwing bows' in the main, I ended up on my head & picking myself off the ground. Did I get pissed? Was I angry? No. If you want to run your own race & stay safe, that's great & I respect that but when the win is on the line & an important one at that, you better be prepared for some action if that 2nd place guy wants it as bad a you do.
I guess I disagree - we debate this at bikeball all the time as well, "what's acceptable level of contact". What's malicious and what's inevitable.
But, I'll revert to the rulebook on this - "Foul - any flagrant or malicious move during competition resulting in a disqualification". That's a bit ambiguous, there really aren't any written rules as to what constitutes a foul, other than impeding a rider in the first 30 feet or the last straight-away. But I think the spirit is there for officials to interpret as necessary.
I'd argue that some contact is inevitable, the "rubbing is racing" issue holds true in my book - those things are going to happen. "Malicious" and "Flagrant" seem to be the key words, if you come up behind me, get under me and flick an elbow or take out my front wheel to toss me off my line, over the berm, on my head - that's malicious. Some bumping and rubbing is fine, but full hard contact that endangers - that's just not right. Man, if I tossed someone down and they got a concussion or broke some bones - I couldn't live with myself. It's just not that important, at least not to me.
I quit racing in 2001 for the same reasons, Doug and Scott were taking things to a pretty heated level and I really didn't want to be the sandwich anymore. It's an escalating mentality, as
bnd has stated - "you just come back the next race & get over on the guy that got over on you originally". That's called "Revenge", I'm not a religious person - but it's one of the seven deadly sins after all.
That's a lame attitude IMHO, one we don't need to stay healthy and have fun. So, yea - go right ahead if that's the way you want to ride. I'll just back off and race again another day, no sweat, I've got nothing to prove that I didn't already dole out 25 years ago.
