I wasn't a spoiled WBL brat like you probably were...

I actually never paid for one set of pants. GT had a good program.

One of the only Summer of 83 pics of me in existance... Or so Jeff says. This is a pic that KOP took. Classic Brad vs Sean at some lame single point race... LOL!

Which one is Sean??? #2 or the dude on the far left?

Or do you mean SHAN?
B. Apold
Sean is # 2, I'm #13.

That might be Rob Tracy in the other GT jersey w/ full face helmet. I think it is.

Here are a couple more. Sean's Mom or Dad took these I think. This was Summer of 82. Sean was #5, Shan #4, Craig Anderson #29, I'm #28. I call 82 my come back year. The year before, not so good. I wasn't growing and guys like Sanberg were.. I finally started to catch up and things got better.

These pics are from Albert Lea and its hard to understand that double jump. Right after you land after a full throttle run to clear it you had to hard brake... in the first photo you can see there's no berm.... It was tough to be clean around it and also easy to over take if riders didn't hit the apex correctly.

King of Pipeline
I remember that Albert Lea Double jump.. Look at the long first straight and the long second straight before double jump.. Most a track for the power riders.

But that double jump was fun back in day. I remember I had to give it everything I had to clear it. It was pretty scary.
B. Apold
You did have to be crank'n to clear it, however in mid-air you had to almost be in turn mod and you couldn't really get any style because of the no berm thing as I've demonstrated in the two pics..
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
Albert Lea bmx was designed by none other than the pride of Hayward-Mark "Steel Thigh" Conley. It looks like a downhill without a hill. Hey Brad-I am sure it made me faster to race against you. We didnt race each other that often really. Albert Lea and Austin is all. I had Jeff Ringenberg in Rochester to contend with. Like Shawn Noble, Jeff was 6ft at 13-I had alot of tall guys in my class locally at our double points etc.

Another tall 13 yr old was Ted Richards -he would make our scene occasionally I remember. I loved when metro guys came to Riverside in Austin-I felt like we were hosting a party. I still think Austin first jump//dropoff was a hoot.

B. Apold
Sean, yes Ringenburg was tall and a good rider. Ted Richards was pure power. He ran 48-16 for gosh sake!

Lets not forget Bill-Fold...LOL!!! This guy was taller than Big Rig and riding a 20" Sting.... WT??? Anyway.

Sean, You also made me faster. Lets not forget you beat me too. If you had a good day, you were tough. The tracks you and I raced on were like bmx-paths compared to the National tracks, so of course going down the Austin drop off it was whoever stayed off the green... LOL!!!!! I wish we had video of some of those first corner crash and burns...haahahaaahaaa

I'm still a Austin triple jump fan. Now that jump you had to be full throttle. It was balls out. I think I nominated myself to be the first person to try and clear it.. I think it was one of those perfect-o landings too. I was closing my eyes the whole time... .

Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
Oh yeah, you mean this triple jump? Mark Conley on cruiser-one of his last races. I believe 1983 vintage Riverside in Austin. Rex Welch in 2nd. Im not sure but that might be me in 3rd?
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
Mark actually later in the year broke his collarbone trying to clear the triple jump in Austin. We need the King Of Pipeline Troy L. triple pic now-You there KOP?

more history

Ted Carl
Good stuff boys, keep it coming....
B. Apold
Here is my contribution to the "triple" in Austin. Of course stupid me, no helmet. Man!! The five of us (and Boecker) never wore helmets though. I think by the time I quit racing I was doing "Grubb's" over the triple. I actually got my foot into the front spokes all crossed up over this jump, the spokes were "clank-clank" in mind air.. Pretty funny.

KOP, post that pic of Lembke clearing that jump. Troy "Powerhouse" Lembke could go from 0-60 quickly.

I'm sure most of these pics we've all seen before, but the "MN Thread" is gone, so lets re-build!

Great photos & stories. Brad, you're starting to show some style. You know, for us spoiled city boys, it was all about looking good.

I wish I would have made it down to those southern tracks. Looks like some fun racing.
B. Apold
WBL, Chill out nerd city boy

WBL, I'm still not clear on when you raced. I know you have an 84 Redline, so I'd guess you raced when I did at some point. I should have raced until 85 (graduation), because I didn't do much except work for Dad and Austin Drug.

Sean, remember you and Mike Thompson going for a ride in the Austin Drug truck-bed??? Me and Jeff Reinhartz were driving and you and Mike were laying down tossing stuff at other cars.. LOL!!!

You want style?? Here's me (age 9) with the 1975 Scrambler bike. I raced this bike until I was 10, then bought the CYC-ames. I was going so fast the "7" came of the number plate. LOL! I've always been a jumper guy. Preferably long distance. This is how I spent all my days before bmx was even around and once it came to MN I was in real heaven..

Brad- could you give us a little background on these two pictures?

That is one of my favorite pics, that is what it is all about!

Here is a lame picture of me on my 78 MAG Scrambler jumping at a place we called "The Pits" near Oakwood Elementary in Plymouth.
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
I started the spring of '83 at Richfield and raced until sometime in '86. My 84 Redline was my second race bike. I started on a Hutch which I think I got in '82.
B. Apold
Mr. Scott Daniels and myself. Scott and I raced one another allot. He was a cool guy and a great rider. Very tall for 12yrs old.

The photo of him in front, I remember "Dan" from Rydjor letting me use his DG goggles and they fogged up so bad I couldn't see a thing and I went down seconds after this picture. I hit a pot hole or something because my vision was gone!!! LOL! Notice the next photo it was back to the Jofa..

I did. The crossed up pic on the berm pic, I don't know what I was doing... Having fun. All those plack and white shots were taken the same day for my photography class at school.

I remember when Mike Thomsen was showing you how to drive the manual tranny in the truck on your 1st day on the job. I remember it was the last day of school-it was either '85 or 86-probably '86? Me, John Tribbet and maybe Rob were in the back. We were kinda loaded if you know what I mean. You kept stalling the truck in mid intersection. I thought for sure we were all going to get nabbed by the cops.

Great pictures Brad. You look so small in the top photo.

There isn't a new schooler around that would ride on a track like that. Classic stuff right there.

Cool picture Pauli. How's room service?
rick kast
sean, i think that the rider in 3rd from the austin pic with rex and mark is marc fritzmeier from roch. on the tracker cruiser he bought from bill ford.
sheely posted a pic of him that marc was in also, you could see the bike better.

Sean that's not the Riverside Austin track, its shorewood... Cool picture though. Being schooled by John.. Also Sean that's 1982. I was #28 that year (15x). I was #13 in 1983 (16x)...

And ya, you were out if it... That truck, OMG. The clutch was gone long before I got there.

I was putting together some pictures for tomorrow's BBQ and I noticed something in the following photo. Is #97 Mark Conley? I know it's hard to tell, but I think the Jersey is the famed MC Racing shirt.

This photo I think is from the winter of 83-84 and I believe this is pro practice.
Jeff Manning
I don't know how this is going to turn out..

More helmetless out laws.

Austins drop down, hittin it backwards. Me jumping, Gene-O in the background.
Guest200901
That is a Famed MC jersey! But not me. Pretty sure that is Dave C.
Guest200901
When you guys post from my site open up the full size photo and click the properties
rick kast
in WBL's pic 11 is rick moliterno on a red dy.
was that the usba nat.? i was there.
Jeff Manning
Here, this is better!

I have my Gonzo- Ted Nugent concert shirt on.

Z-wango Z-tango!!

John Sandberg
Great pix everyone.

Manning: Where is that shot of you jumping from? (EDITED: Nevermind, I see in the earlier note that it's Austin.)

Mark/Chucky: #97 is indeed Dave C. #11 is Rick Molitero from Iowa. #200 is somebody who realized he was in the wrong moto.

Before anyone gets too confused-the photo with Jeff Manning above is from the the circa 1979/80 "Wildwood" bmx track. The drop off from wildwood is a different place and time from the Austin Riverside BMX 82/83 era dropoff.

About the 1982 Sandberg/Kragness/Apold photo-Brad, I am not so sure the photo with John is from Shorewood? I dont remember Shorewood having massive trees in the infield..Ted Carl help!

Rick Kast-I am thinking it is not Fritzmeier -I could and often am wrong-only because I am thinking I recognize my Tahoe cruiser with the all blue stock hardware. I can just make out the green/white/blue on my helmet, and it looks like my yellow "beater" Tahoe jersey. lets discuss.

ps, what a photo juggernaut we just had?!

[ September 07, 2007, 11:07 AM: Message edited by: Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r ]
B. Apold
Sean, that's certainly not Austin Riverside. I think Ted Carl said that was Shorewood when it was first posted.
B. Apold
The photo of Jeff Manning hitting the jump backwards, though I'm not convinced its Austin "wildwood", this is me hitting that same jump the track direction.

Edit: I guess the more I stare, Jeff I think your right.. sorry mate!

Rick, it may be a USBA national. I'll have more pictures tomorrow at the BBQ for you to look at.
B. Apold
Cool picture Pauli. I haven't seen that yet.

I found this picture in my bucket, but it looks like an Ol' MC photo. This is Eddy King in the flesh @ Minnetonka 79. That was still one of my favorite local events to date. Seeing Clinton, Eddy, Agulera, Jason Jenson, Kevin Jackson, Delgado, etc. was just the coolest thing I'd ever seen..
WBL BMXer - aka Chucky
Where was the Minnetonka track? I remember hearing about it, but this was well before my time.
J.T.
I wonder what happened to Eddy King's bike?

One of my favorite riders, King Edward!

Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
that Minnetonka track looked like it was cool. Sorta downhill, too bad it never made it to the early 80's era. Brad, I still say the drop off photo is from Austin.-who will help us solve this??
B. Apold
Another from the sameday. Schwinn guys showing us how it was done. Notice me on the right. Ames bike and "tucked in bmx sweat socks". Those darn So-MN guys.. If there is anything I wish I had back, that bike would be at the top of the list.

That drop off never had a bump after the intial drop... Trust me thats not Austin. I do remember the last double point race that Nick, John, Tim K drove down for and I was trying to find the results. Besides, the Austin race your talking about was in 83.. That's my 82 number in the pic you posted and I think John was #2 in 1983. I do still have my memory ya know.. LOL
B. Apold
RL, I've got Eddy's bike.

Sean, That track was fast. I think they added that jump in the middle of the hill for that National race, because it was through'n a few locals off. We never seen anything like that before. Notice the 4 man gate. Those Torker/Schwinn guys must have had a laugh when they saw that..hahaahaahaa.

Pauli, you scanned a newspaper clipping of me this past Summer, do you have it saved in a bucket??? I can't find it for the life of me. I have the original, but I wanna post it to shut Miland up...LOL!!! j/k
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
i think the race, Austin double points was in 1982. That was the "big year" in Austin. By mid 1983 it was slowing and by fall 83 I had quit. You will notice that the photo of Mark Conley jumping the triples has slightly run down triple jump mounds.- by 1983 they were becoming smaller and washed out- a sign of a track going down. I know those trees in the background- Austin infield. I think the dropoff did have a bump. Boy I hope Im right-I really gonna have my foot in my mouth if "Pee-wee" Apold wins this.
J.T.
Wow, you should bring Eddy's bike to the BBQ or to Rehbeins!

With Jensen's found I wonder were Aggies is, probably in Vegas?
Jeff Manning
Sean-

Same jump at Shorewood as BA, Nk, and, JS..

This is a different angle with DC, DaBerger, and Tom Erickson..Its Shorewood!
Rydjors Dark Sider Black Sheep 1%'r
hey Rick K, this is my ID proof. We probably combined the cruisers into one class in 1983 at Austin.
