Full Version: The Red Baron's Rink Raider

Many many years ago there was a good man who used to own a shop in Orange County. He went on to run Peddlepower (and later, Powerlite) bikes. He also ran Corona for a while and was a weekly feature at Western-Sports-A-Rama (WSA)

But before the frames most of us know, he had a frame known to some as the Rink Raider

Several well known riders including Dennis Dain rode the frame to many great placings:

Eventually, Steve Rink went to a conventional looking frame and Steve Johnson picked up the design and went on to form Torker.

Just a few Rink Raiders were made back in the day and even less survive today. This is an example of what it looked like back in 75.

Sidehacker extraordinaire and good friend Dennis Dain did me the great favor of letting me restore the bike. I want to thank him for this and tell him it's going to take a crowbar to get me to let go of his bike.

Gentleman and ladies. The Peddlepower Rink Raider. The only one known to exist

Ted Carl
Hide it at my house.....

Someone post up a Torker "hook tail" so we can see the next step in the evolution...

If I interpreted your data correctly, TIM does not have one of these....

~~~clearing a spot for it~~~
Thumperpilot
I fixed your sentence Ted, it should read - TIM does not have one of these YET. LOL!!!!
BTW, that bike is badass!
Wow.
LIOldSchoolBMX
That is out of control!! How many were actually made?
The Red Baron
That bike has been following me around since 1975. It was in serious need of some tender loving care.
Rick and I met at the big reunion in Arizona back in March. Of course we got along fine from the start. (who wouldn't get along with Rick, he is an outstanding individual with a huge heart)
A while back Rick came up from San Diego to practice on the sidehack for the Roseville hack gathering. Of course I gave him the grand tour (of the garage LOL). He has such a passion for anything old school BMX, so he was thoroughly enjoying himself in my stash of stuff.
A situation came up where Rick was in need of a project. I asked if he would do me the honor of restoring my first real race bike (after my Schwinn).
I think he did a great job! Of course I have not seen the bill yet. LOL
Thanks Rick!
Wow...that is awesome. Reilley 1 strikes again!
Great job Rick- another piece of bmx history preserved.
Rick, allow me to interject some more history. For those who don't know, I worked with Steve Rink @ Peddlepower (and then Powerlite within the store) for almost 3 years after being sponsored by him for a while post Dirtmasters.
Steve Johnson always built this frame from day 1. When Steve Johnson wanted to do "his own line" (aka Torker), Steve Rink developed the "new" Peddlepower frame which became Powerlite. Dennis' soon to be sponsor Bill Hemmerick was at the early stages of WSA and Steve Rink was the grass roots force behind the track start up before Mr. Hemmerick's ego took control (sorry had to throw that in) and put Dennis on this Peddlepower frame. I have a pic of mine in the Torker thread.
Ooooh, sorry Red, nobody warned you?
Rick does this 3 amigos thing,... in Spanish, did he do that for you? It's his way of explaining his fees and the contract to you. Translated, it says, "Posession is 9/10ths of the law".
You were expecting him to give it back? Wow, Sorry dude. He's kinda funny that way.
on to the Torker thread...lol.
Very cool story and really nice bike. Way to go Rick! Dennis you know what you gotta do...just bring a crowbar along.
DAN
Just when a guy starts to get real bored with vintage BMX this comes along. DD you really got the right guy to do up that machine.
The Red Baron
I got to see the bike today. Rick came up this way today for an OS Gathering with a bunch of old schoolers. I felt like I was 16 again just sitting on it!
I am sure Rick will post some of the pictures he took with me sitting on it. He even took it for a couple of spins in the skate park next to where the gathering was!
This next picture is kind of amazing. It is the first turn at the Corona downhill around 1975. I cannot tell for sure because of the angle of the front riders, but I am almost sure everyone in this picture is on that frame.
That is Brian Ramosinski out front with Allen Underwood on the outside (both were sponsored by Pedalpower) followed by Leo Green and Kevin McNeal, both rode that frame, and that is me in the back, riding the exact bike that Reilley rebuilt.
bmxmom
way cool! looking forward to more pics
btw - was a crowbar involved in the exchange?
G-Flash
Mr Showoff has done it again with another great resto on another exquisite frame!
HinkDog411
It's funny, I asked DD how he was going to get his bike back to his place, and he said "Rick's going to keep it!" Of course, DD was riding a motorcycle and had to leave early, so he couldn't hide a crowbar in his fannypack. Hearing the history of the bike and all of the guys who came over to check it out was a blast.
The man and the bike reunited...
I have to add that the Simi Motomags are Red's original ones that he had in his garage. Damn museum in there too!
Ted Carl
We should probably wish Rick a speedy recovery from his injuries. ...Cuz I know Rick didn't give that one up without a fight, and must be battered and bruised... Then again, Red probably didn't walk away unscathed either....lol
Too bad big bro "Hack" wasn't there to help defend it, together, I think you coulda taken him...
Great resto, great history lessons, very cool bike.
agentheinz
That's serious BMX roots there. Sweetness!
