First I’d like to thank all who have contributed to this site. It has inspired me to build (a similar) bike like the one I had BITD: a 83 black chrome GT.

I purchased this 82 GT fork knowing I’d have to restore it but I don’t seem to recall them having this much ‘rake’. The legs are kicked forward 3.5 degrees, or about 5/8".
Should the fork blades be inline with the steerer tube (as I believe they should) or are they really kicked out this much?

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance,
Greg
PS: I'm having trouble posting images. My apologies.

the spaces in the file name is making it not show up. replace the spaces with %20 and it will show.

here's the url to use - http://gregmelms.com/bike%20pics/GT%20FORK%20004R.jpg

Thank You Rick!

Looks pretty bent doesn't it?

This may also give an idea of the amount of rake.

The steerer tube is parallel with the granite.

nothing to worry about, my gt forks rake too!
early gt forks were not straight inline with the steer tube...
most companies in the early 80's had forks that had rake...

Here is pic of my bike from 83 or so. Everyone used to tell me that my forks were bent back then. Well I still have the bike and they still look the same and have not "bent" any more after many many jumps back in the early-mid 80's.

Wow, now that is work shop, granite bench tops! Geez!

I agree, the early GT forks had a little bit of rake, but I can't say how many degree's...I'm sure some one here will know....

I wouldn't bend those forks just yet...

I just looked at my 83 black chrome GT and it has a similar rake. I can't say exactly, but using a straight edge I would say it's the neighborhood of a half an inch.

I think since you have it on a bench with the steerer tube perfectly straight, it makes the rake look exagerated.

Also, bent forks are usually bent in the other direction, correct?

Thanks everyone for their help. Very reassuring!

Ponch: you're very fortunate to still have your bike.

John: Yes, they usually do bend the other way! That's why I was unsure.

What I wouldn't give to have my black chrome GT back....
