Were the original MOTOMAG I's all made in Simi? Or did Skip also make them when he moved BMX Industries to Chatsworth?

Santa, (the FEDEX dude), came yesterday and dropped off a set of the Simi cast wheels as well as 2 sets of Motomag II's yesterday and a Mongoose Motomag.

I believe all MM I's were made in Simi. I think the early MM II's were also made in Simi, then switched to Chatsworth. That's just from memory though, I'm out of town & can't verify with the MM's I have. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong....

Early MM-Is were made in Simi, then they switched to Chatsworth but still MM-Is. MM-IIs were all made in Chatsworth.

Simi Motomags..Cool!

You don't need TWO sets of motomag 2's.....so sell me one set.

Just goes to show that you learn something new every day. I was under the impression that all MM1's, were made in Simi.
Is there a way to tell the difference between Simi and Chatsworth MM1's?
The set I have has no marking other than "motomag" on one spoke and "BMX prod." on the opposing spoke.

I just sold a set of MM 1's that were mixed - the front was marked Simi and the rear is marked Chatsworth...

The only difference I could see was the Chatsworth was drilled for a reflector.

RCain - is your set MM1's or MM2's??
RCain
MM1's
one of the spoke crossings in each wheel has a reflector hole, but nowhere on either wheel does it say "simi" or "chatsworth"

I was looking at my MM I's and noticed that the Chatsworth wheels are a somewhat smoother cast than the Simi's.

"You don't need TWO sets of motomag 2's.....so sell me one set. " Tom, I know that, that's why I have 3 sets of MM II's 2 sets of MM I's and a mixed set.Front is a I rear is a II.

Earlier thread

Simi's were Pat.Pending....Chats had a Patent number.

I have a mis-matched set as well....I was asleep when Vista's auction ended....that set was just the opposite of my set...I really blew it!

I wonder if the unmarked ones are really early???

Either way - MotoMags are just plain.... Moto!!!
RCain
OK I looked at Monster Robots link and still couldnt make out any significant markings on the spoke under the Motomag marking.
Then my Son came in and started to take pics of it to post here.
As he was taking the pic he asked "does one of the wheels say U.S.Pat?"

Sure enough with the right lighting it was visible after he pointed it out it.
Very poor/rough casting and old eyeballs

The set I have is Chatsworth, at least the front is. I am assuming that the rear matches as they came on the same survivor goose but the rear casting is worse than the front.

So which is rarer??
Of the 6 MM 1's I own, only one is a Chat....

I guess that the Chats were made only for a short while after the move to Chatsworth and before the transition to the motomag 2???

Did anyone see the picture of the broken MM 1 that had a caption to the effect of "see how strong our forks are" - I think they were Webco forks??

MM1's regardless are the coolest wheels - period. They mark what was the coolest of accessories from the begining.

Nick.....as was stated....all were marked. The SIMI markings are so faint because of the crude casting which is what gives these wheels character.

Sometimes the cracks are obvious but on the 1's they can be hard to detect. Can anyone tell me from firsthand experience....did these wheels ever crack just from stress(no direct impact) or was it always a peddle jab? I've seen them cracked where there was no apparent impact. Just curious....
